And it’s all from the amazing brain of MIT graduate Nate Ball, host of PBS’s Emmy Award-winning Design Squad series.

When a four-inch-tall alien crash-lands through Zack McGee’s bedroom window, Zack is sure he’s about to become the first victim in a new War of the Worlds. Book Title: Alien in My Pocket: Blast Off!Author/Illustrator: Nate Ball / Macky PamintuanReading Level: 4.6Book Level: Grades 1-4Book Summary: "Alien in my Pocket: Blast off" is a fun children's novel, built around common-core science and fun hands-on experiments, meant to interest students in science. The main character, Zach, finds himself in a situation where we needs to help a crash-landed alien find his way back home, through a home built rocket.Bookshelf Genre:Science FictionBookshelf Mentor Writing Traits Ideas: This would be a useful mentor text to teach students about how author's utilize the writing train of "Ideas". In my classroom, after we have read this book, I would task my with taking one of the ideas or concepts they are learning about in another class and trying to make a comic strip out of the idea - just how this book took common-core ideas around science to make a fun short story for children on homemade soda bottle rocket building. Other Suggestions: In my classroom, I would try to align the reading of this book for weeny 9th grade students are building their Soda Rockets in their physical science class. This book would be a perfect bridge to that unit and could help peak my students' interest in the topic.

Totally worth the moneyI give this 100% it’s an amazing funny book. When I first got this book for a school challenge I thought it would be like a cheesy sci-fi book ! But I got sucked in right when we meet Amp . I like Nate ball’s visualization of Amp the 3 fingered blue alien or Erdian I am so glad I was asked to read this book ! Thank you Nate ball for sharing your amazing story with us!! !😃😀😁😆👍🏻

James (age 8) says: "I liked it because, well, everyone in his family was a science nerd except Zack, and suddenly a blue alien crashes his spaceship into Zack's room. He's mad at his big brother because his brother makes fun of him for not being able to invent anything. And then he learns a lot of stuff from the alien that even his dad doesn't know. They didn't even know that aliens existed. I would like to read more books in this series because it left off in an exciting spot."

One of OBOB's 2017-18 books for 3-5 grade group. As an adult I had trouble getting into this book, even though it was so short and accessible. About half-way through it became more engaging. I love the idea of a book series with accompanying STEM engagement!

Summary: One night as Zack is lying in bed, ready to fall asleep for school in the morning, he looked out his window and caught sight of what he thought was a shooting star. He wanted to get the full potential from this. He made three whole wishes on the star. When he opened his eyes though, what he thought was a star was still falling towards Earth. It seemed to be getting bigger and falling a lot slower. Then all of a sudden it crashed into his house destroying his room. Out of the small rocket came a little blue alien named Amp from planet Erde. Amp thought that he was going to come to Earth and take it over, but to his surprise humans were much larger than he thought they were. After a while Amp and Zack sort of become friends and must work together to fix Amp’s ship and get him back to Erde before the rest of his planet comes to destroy and take over Earth tomorrow at 4:45p.m.! Zack must go to school tomorrow though, and Amp sneaks into his backpack at school Amp creates much chaos as he is able to get into people’s minds and make them do silly thigs and say even sillier things. After creating a huge mess at school and borrowing magnets from the school lab without asking, Amp, Zack, and the neighbor girl Olivia all work to fix Amp’s rocket so he can go home and stop the invasion. After many failed takeoff attempts, Amp realizes that he miss calculated the date since time on his planet is different and figures out they actually have 119 days until invasion.Questions:1. What would you do if you were Zack and an alien landed in your room?2. Why do you think that Zack decided to keep Amp a secret and help him rather than telling an adult?3. When Amp does make it back home do you think that he will ever come back and visit with Zack and Olivia?4. How would you rewrite the section when everyone was trying to fix Amp’s ship from his point of view?5. What was the most exciting/funny part of the story to you and why?Citation:Ball, N. (2016). I received book One and Two of this series from the author at an author reception. I gave them to my ten year-old son, who is a reluctant reader. He loved them! I'm so pleased because it's been difficult to find books for him. And he's on summer vacation from school, which impresses me even more. The books are funny and engaging. My son loves the story and the science. The author has a natural voice for children, especially boys--but I recommend this book for boys and girls! So glad there are more of them.I may need to upgrade my son from reluctant, to willing!

There is something about the characters in this book that are infinitely appealing - perhaps it is the way they are written in such a believable manner. Zack's nighttime foray with one bumbling moment after another is laugh-out-loud funny (as is the scene in the science lab). And I love how the author makes it possible to safely replicate the science in the book. So much better than outlandish books that don't allow for even the possibility, which only results in disappointed kids and frustrated parents.I hope the author can keep this up.
