Almost Adulting Audiobook Summary

For fans of Grace Helbig and Alexa Chung comes a fresh, hilarious guide to growing up your way from social media influencer and lifestyle vlogger Arden Rose.

In Almost Adultingperfect for budding adults, failing adults, and eaters of microwave mug brownies–Arden tells you how to survive your future adulthood. Topics include:

  • Making internet friends who are cool and not murderers
  • Flirting with someone in a way to make them think you are cool and not a murderer
  • Being in an actual relationship where you talk about your feelings in a healthy manner??? To the other person???????
  • Eating enough protein
  • Assembling a somewhat acceptable adult wardrobe when you have zero dollars
  • Going on adventures without starting to smell
  • How sex is supposed to feel, but, like, actually though

By the end of the book–a mash-up of essays, lists, and artwork–you’ll have learned not only how to dress yourself, how to travel alone, how to talk to strangers online, and how to date strangers (in PERSON!), but also how to pass as a real, functioning, appropriately socialized adult.

3.5/4.0 STARSI'm too tired to write a review but this book was adorable. I know a lot of people had problems with it because the "advice" was generic and there were a lot of personal stories but...isn't that the point? I listened to it on audiobook which I think helped. Made the whole thing more relatable and funny.

Reviews can be found on my blog!: www.booknerdtan.wordpress.comListened to via Scribd! Finally, a YouTuber I haven't previously watched or even heard of.This was a quick and really funny read. I can see why people compare her to Grace Helbig; she has that similar goofy, ball of anxiety type of humour.Coming into this autobiography without knowing anything about Arden Rose, I definitely left the book loving her and wanting to know more about her so I quickly went to watch some of her videos.THIS GIRL IS BLUNT AS HELL AND I'M ALL ABOUT IT.I loved the way she was very open about all the mental health issues she has struggled with since her teen years.I feel that if anyone was reading this and having similar issues, the fact that she spoke so openly and frankly about everything would be a great comfort for anyone who needed help, but was struggling to admit it to themselves, friends or family. Her discussion about her long distance relationship was something that I really connected with. The couple seem to have the sweetest relationship that feels like it's one that could go the distance. The sex chapter towards the end of the book was absolutely brilliant. It is so rare that you hear women open up so honestly and frankly about sex and masturbation, but she managed to do it without it being cringy and awkward and I loved it.Hearing her experience with her religious upbringing and her first time and all the awkwardness and disappointed that came with it had me in bits. The way she opened up about her struggles with her sick father was heartbreaking and made me tear up a little.Overall, I'm really glad I gave this a read and have walked away from it with an improved and more open minded view of certain topics. Will definitely be checking out more of her channel!

Easy, fun and enjoyable :) I was surprised that I liked so much a book written by a YouTuber, who I haven't even watched. So you can freely read and enjoy it despite not following Arden on any social medias.

Idk why this book is getting so much shit, Arden gives specific, insightful advice while other YouTube "self help" books are too fluffy and flighty.

"We're tough as shit and we're going to make it."This book honestly made me feel like one heck of an adult. It also made me feel like a 15-year-old. But most importantly, it made me feel great about being both of those things. 💜

Charming and quirky, but a little redundant. Still, I can see it's value among today's high school generation. I wish it had come out when I was a teenager. Arden's YouTube career is very notable, and the fact that she was able to fit a book in that comes across as genuine and authentic to readers is impressive.

i'm really surprised by how much i liked this. body positive, sex positive, OCD rep (+ medication for mental illness positive), eating disorder rep, funny, and relatable. i listened to this on audio and it was a fast, easy enjoyable read. i would have like a few things to be fleshed out a bit more like the eating disorder bit, but overall i'd recommend it.

“Address your feelings like relatives; you’re going to have to see them all every now and again, probably and especially at family reunions.”

"No one really knows what they’re doing, and I find a bizarre comfort in that. After all, you can’t judge yourself for being such a fuckup when you know that everyone else is struggling just as hard to be a normal human with responsibilities." We are all fuckups. You, me, the weird lady down the street and everyone in between who might seem like they've got their shit together. We are all fuckups. All trying to be responsible adults, taking care of ourselves and what needs to be taken care of. Or ignoring our issues for a while binge-watching a new series online. Second option being my most used approach. (New season of Orange is the new Black anyone?) It’s adulting, or trying to, whatever adulting means. “I’m going to tell you the truth: Most adults don’t feel like adults. I’m technically of adulting age, and I still feel like I shouldn’t be allowed in R-rated movies without a legal guardian. Truth be told, there isn’t a day when your application is accepted. There isn’t an “aha!” moment when you realize you’ve finally passed the threshold into adulthood." I feel the same way as sassy Youtuber Arden Rose when it comes to being an adult actually feeling like one - I don’t. I often don’t feel like I’m twenty years old but rather a thirteen-year-old kid pretending to be an adult for a day, getting into deep waters where I have no effin’ clue what I am doing, how to do it or maybe even why I’m doing it. It’s all a game of pretending to be an adult, like I’ve got it all together when inwardly all I am thinking is what the f am I doing? or how on earth am I gonna do this?I am not old enough to be finished with my bachelor degree next summer. I’m thirteen for f’s sake, not adult-age. I still don’t feel like I should be allowed to drink rum and coke while on vacation or fancy drinks with umbrellas in them (yet at the same time feel like an upbeat city-girl for drinking cocktails, oh the irony). Adulthood is definitely weird. But then again, puberty was weird too. Guess different life-stages are just weird, period. “There’s nothing that designates you as a correct adult. People talk about adulthood like it requires fitting into a socially agreed-upon standard of living. But that doesn’t really determine adulthood. Being an adult just means making educated decisions for yourself that you think will make your life better and your own. The responsibility of adulthood is pretty inevitable. But you can adult however you want.” I agree whole-heartedly with Rose when it comes to society forcing one version of adulthood down your throat:Don’t want kids? (Uptight) freak.Don’t want to get married? (Eccentric) freak.Don’t want to climb the corporate ladder? (Lazy) freak.Want to live in a yellow house with a blue roof 54 km away from civilization with only a Segway as transportation? (Lonely) freak. You do you. If that for you means you want to eat ice-cream for breakfast like Pete Wentz, go for it. Maybe you write emails instead of calling professionals because you have social anxiety, that’s cool too. That’s one of my favorite phrases, you do you. Because like Rose, I believe what floats your boat most likely does not float mine, and that is a-okay. All in all, I really like Roses quirky, funny style of writing. The content is relatable, I definitely agree with her viewpoint on online chatting and -friendships. This, to me, is a mix between a memoir and a self-help/advice book, but it works. It’s personal but it also speaks to the reader. The author has clearly got opinions and also stories of her own personal battles. Her struggles are relatable, especially to the younger generations due to the heavy influence social media and online presence have on our daily life and outlook. The advice is nothing we haven’t heard a million times before and it’s pretty straight forward and common sense, but welcome reminders nonetheless. This is relatable, it is honest and it is problems we all (can/will) struggle with in this mess we call our life. It's also a quick read, easy to swallow and no harm done if it wasn't your cup of tea.

Reviewed on Books Cats TeaIf almost adulting comes with this much affirming of personal responsibilities, then adulting itself is a wise master. That being said, Rose's Almost Adulting is a working checklist and cheap piece of good therapy and advise for those stuck (or, I would argue, happily situated) between the carefree child they feel inside and the responsible adult society demands.{view blog for cute cat picture}As a thirty-something, I found myself agreeing with most of the ideas Almost Adulting explained. I absolutely agree that you should separate your sleep space from your work space. Pages 156 and 157 in their entirety are important. I did sometimes feel like skimming to the next point because of the occasional overly personalized stories. Too much teenage drama (or any drama, really) isn't my thing, especially when the story roamed too close to home. High school friends that you thought were your friends turns out to be using you or talking about you behind your back. Buh-bye. Done. Next. However, those are parts vital to the growth experience and they help to show how you can over come them. Suck as they might. The best gem that Rose offers is to essentially personalize your life. Live by your standards and determine what makes you happy. My biggest advice to those who have asked me is that you need to be able to make yourself happy and content before you can have a chance at making others happy. Not only do you need to know what makes you happy, but you also have to actively do it. Your happiness is truly all that matters (which WILL cause those you care about to be happy in turn). That and not being a dick.Almost Adulting is a great book for teens and young adults. Tweens can get a leg up on their confidence and real world expectations as well. Even those of us who have been mostly adulting for a little while now can use a boost to our self esteem and a reaffirming pat on the back (or a reaffirming kick in the ass, whichever. Or both.)

This book was so light and funny -very often reminded me of conversations with my friends. I loved the final chapter about mental health, I highlighted like 90% of this chapter. "You work and work and work for a better life, and then you're not allowed to appreciate it. That 's been my brain's life philosophy since I was seventeen years old. I felt like I cheated the system by enganging in a job I loved doing."

While not a true self help book, I love the tone and how comfortable and fun this book made me feel. Sometimes you just need to know you're not alone. That someone else has been through what you've been through. If you're looking for a how-to guide on staying on top of deadlines and bills and other adulting things then this book isn't it, but if you need a friend to make you laugh then read this.
