Dirty Genes Audiobook Summary

A leading expert in epigenetics–how genes switch on and off–provides a revolutionary, holistic, and personalized approach to better health by improving how your genes behave to prevent and reverse common ailments, chronic illnesses, and life-threatening diseases, including cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, anxiety, depression, digestive issues, obesity, cancer, diabetes, and more.

Your genes have a tremendous impact on your health. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Ben Lynch reveals that while you can’t change the genes you were born with, you can change how they affect you.

When your genes are working properly, you feel energized and healthy. But when your genes are “dirty,” or not functioning optimally, your health suffers. Some genes are “born dirty”–they have certain variations that can cause you problems. Other genes merely “act dirty” in response to your environment, diet, or lifestyle. You can optimize both types of dirty genes by cleaning them up through healthy eating, good sleep, stress relief, environmental detox, and other holistic and natural means.

An experienced researcher in the emerging science of gene abnormalities who has successfully treated thousands of clients, Dr. Lynch offers a simple questionnaire to identify which of the top seven dirty genes could be undermining your health. Then he offers targeted plans–including foods and recipes, supplements, and environmental detox–to clean up your dirty genes, eliminate symptoms, and optimize your physical and mental health.

Many of us have been taught that our genes doom us to the disorders that run in our families. But Dr. Lynch shows that you can rewrite your genetic destiny–once you know how. Dirty Genes provides a practical, personalized protocol to make the most of your genetic inheritance, now and for the rest of your life.

An interesting take on epigenetics. While it still remains to be seen what comes out of all these ideas, whether they are true or pseudo- science and whatnot, some of the stuff is cool. Another thing is that lots of stuff are regular things we all ought to do not matter what: sleep more, stress less, eat good stuff, exercise, spend less hours motionlessly staring at assorted spaces (books/TV/computers/etc)... Still, it's a good thing to know that these might have some effects other than the things we all readily understand about these platitude resembling wisdoms. Takeouts:Matylation. Genes expression.SNP (single-nucleotide polymorphism)

We all have SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) which can affect our health and personalities. You were either “born dirty” with these genes or sometimes they can be “acting dirty” due to your diet, environment and/or lifestyle. Lynch teaches you how to “clean” these dirty genes in order to optimise your health. It sounds like pseudoscientific quackery, but it’s not.Due to suffering from a chronic illness myself, I have become interested in my genes and have recently undergone genetic testing. This book accompanies genetic testing very well, although you don’t need to have been tested prior to reading this. Once you can get past Lynch’s giant ego, this book is super interesting and highly informative. It’s lay-person friendly and encompasses the oftentimes complicated fields of epigenetics and nutrigenomics in a simple way. Lynch is an extremely knowledgable naturopathic doctor full of enthusiasm, passion and a genuine desire to help. This is my first experience of what a naturopath actually does and my attitude towards them has completely changed! They help you get to the route cause of your illness(es) instead of just treating the symptoms with pharmaceuticals (which can have awful side effects).I’m looking forward to implementing some of his advice to try and improve my health 😊Some downsides:- the questionnaires aren’t entirely specific to the SNP in question and there is some overlap between SNPs- I just wish he’d stop referring to cell membranes as “cell walls” - we are not plants!! 😂- Occasional use of sweeping statements - I get that he’s trying to keep this complicated area of science simple, but more nuance is needed at times.

This is the best book about living a healthy life that I have ever read. If you want to understand how your body works together as a whole system and achieve not just good, but your optimal health, this is the book for you.Dr. Lynch's concept of Dirty Genes is elegant and brilliant. Your genes are either born "dirty" (what you inherited), or your genes get "dirty" through your environment and lifestyle choices. We are all impacted by the air around us, the water we drink, and chemicals in the food we eat. We are stressed, distracted, and flooded with information. Dr. Lynch breaks down the dirty genes into 7 "super genes" and shows you how to identify which genes are dirty and how to clean them. You don't need genetic testing to read and benefit from this book. It has an assessment that tells you which genes are acting dirty. I felt like Dr. Lynch was talking directly to me so many times as I read this book. My eyes have been opened to many possibilities through food, nutrition, and natural remedies, and I'm excited! Dirty Genes doesn't try to scare you into thinking that somehow you are damaged or bad. In fact, he shows you how, when you clean your dirty genes, you can use them like superpowers. Fantastic book. I highly recommend it to everyone. Note: I read an advance review copy.

This book goes to a lot of effort helping you understand some common SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms, i.e. genetic changes), giving you both questionnaires and treatments. The basic theme of Dirty Genes is that, though genetics obviously matter a lot, your lifestyle dramatically influences whether or not ‘dirty’ genes will affect you. This recent field of study, called epigenetics, is carefully explained in this book with respect to some common, important SNPs. Focused health intervention without a solid reason can be helpful but is just as likely to be harmful, expensive, and discouraging. The questionnaires may be helpful, but they are also rather vague. Thus this aspect of the book may cause trouble if you use it as intended, unless you’ve had genetic testing done. On the other hand, I found Dirty Genes a fascinating addition to my knowledge of functional medicine and there were a few helpful facts, e.g. folic acid supplements are not the same as biologically active folate and block its absorption. However, as a baseline everyone should follow the same fundamental health protocol which reduces the effect of genetic changes on a person’s health. Chapter 12 is excellent for this. It gives detailed tips, some of which are well-known and others of which have been explained in the previous chapters. The following chapters are, again, focused on reducing the effects of particular SNPs, but most people who diligently follow chapter 12 will see improvement in their health. However, the more focused recommendations could make all the difference for someone who already has a healthy diet and lifestyle. This book may be a valuable roundup of research for practitioners, but for most of us the main goal is to learn to live as recommended in chapter 12. Living this way is not a minor project, but the payback for us and our families is huge, especially if there are health issues. If this is the only health book you plan to read, it may not be the best choice, but if you read several a year Dirty Genes will add a new dimension to your knowledge as well as continued encouragement to improve your diet and lifestyle. I personally find such encouragement invaluable as I keep trying to improve my own health—it helps me stay on this countercultural path.

My friend and colleague Dr. Ben Lynch wrote a great book describing why our genes are important and how our genes impact our health and how environmental factors influence our epigenetic expression of those genes. A clear, concise guide for those who want to understand why our genes matter and how to be proactive in optimizing health.

Dirty Genes: A Breakthrough Program to Treat the Root Cause of Illness and Optimize Your Health is a great book about getting healthy. Ben Lynch helps the reader figure out which genes might be dirty--either genetics from birth or lifestyle. Then he introduces a "soak and scrub" protocol to generally improve gene function followed by a "spot clean" protocol to focus on problematic genes. The science is well-explained, and compared to other similar protocols, the suggestions are doable and not overwhelming. I'm planning to recommend this book to people I know who are looking to make healthy changes in their lives.

I read this book because I had genetic testing done that showed I have a mutation in the MTHFR (A double mutation in this case, meaning I inherited a mutation from both my mom and dad) and COMT genes. This book was great, but I wish it was easier to apply to my life. For example, it would be very hard to stay away from all chemicals, including plastic. It’s hard to avoid all refined foods, although I can work on avoiding more of them and eating healthier. And I really don’t want to pay to have all the mold removed from my house. However, there were some awesome and easier things to apply that make the most difference, including lowering your stress, sleeping enough, eating better, meditating, and laughing. Even forgiving yourself for not doing things perfectly and taking spontaneous days off from everything without feeling guilty. Good mental health goes a long way in overall health.I mean, cookies, brownies, and cupcakes really help lower my stress. Just sayin’. See why I can’t give this book 5 stars? ;). Although, I suppose I believe in moderation.Another note about stress. I didn’t have many symptoms of these genetic defects until I had a huge amount of stress in my life. When that happened, I got very sick. Giving myself a break and meditating helped so much in slowly get better again.I am glad I found a book the addresses these mutations and how to clean up your genes and improve your health. I just want to be healthy again, without taking so many medications. I’m glad I read it.

After struggling with an autoimmune condition for over a decade, I feel like someone just opened the bars of my cell, handed me Dr. Ben Lynch's Book, and said, "Go, you're free." I truly did not understand that our genes express themselves every day - or not - and that we can influence that expression. It's not concrete - it's malleable. This book is like a roadmap to understanding and simplifying something that felt far beyond my pay grade. This book cuts through the hype, the confusion and lays out an achievable plan. I read it twice the same day it arrived. Highly recommend.

I’m gaining so much information on how our genes are impacted by our lifestyle, diet, mindset, and environment. Well organized & easy to follow along, many genes are described in full detail & how to help clean them up. Lots of recipes, lab testing, resources & tools are mentioned, most of which are used by Dr. Lynch. Very excited to use this book as a daily reference in optimizing my health, as I have learned a few of my genes are dirty!

Dirty Genes is a much needed book. It cuts through the cacophony of genetics and epigenetics that is usually paired with 'take this supplement for that genetic issue' and provides a realistic and approachable plan that addresses the foundation of all of these issues. No genetics test required! This book also provided the most complete and understandable process of methylation in every day term that I've ever seen. It's easy to read and discusses the 7 main genetic variations that have solid scientific research behind them and how to see if you are being affected by them. There's also good mix of recipes to give an example of what a supportive meal consists of and it points out how the recipe supports or dirties one of the sevens genes.I had so many epiphanies while reading this book about the various health issues I've experienced over the past decade and why they were getting worse despite doing what I was told or thought was going to help. I have already started making changes to help me deal with my fatigue and insomnia, and I'm seeing results that bring me hope. Also, heart health issues run in my family, and he brings up the most common reasons for it that this program addresses. I feel a lot less like a victim of my DNA now.Even better, I have a much better idea of how to help my two children with Autism, ADHD, and anxiety. We'll be addressing the foundations at home based on this book and work with their health care providers to provide complete care. Giving 4 stars because I wanted a bit more information for specific areas that were briefly mentioned, such as how being mad or sad drives cravings. **I was given a pre-release copy in exchange for my honest review.

I have become very skeptical about health books. Every "expert" contradicts every other expert and has their own rigid take on what everybody should or should not be eating or putting on or in their bodies, and they usually have a list of required products that you have to buy from them in order to succeed with their program. This book was refreshingly none of those things.I think this is one of the most well-explained and broadly applicable health books I have ever read. It's very balanced in that he wants you to learn to listen to your own body, and take stock daily of what your body is needing at the time. No cookie cutter diet here.It is holistic, scientific, and makes sense with everything else I've learned in health research and personal experience. It's also very sustainable because he accounts for day-to-day changes and being flexible with lifestyle choices, so strict and rigid restrictions are not necessary, there is an ebb and flow and learning to be in tune with the effects of our diet, environmental toxins, and a large portion is spent talking about the effects of stress. Best of all you don't need expensive testing to get started right away. His lists of symptoms will give a good clue towards how to address your body's deficiencies. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to fine tune their own personal health regimen.

Interesting read on one's health through the POV of your own genetics. The book's author discusses 7 genes: MTHFR, DAO, COMT, MAOA, GST/GPX. NOS3, PEMTWe fill in a quick survey and determine a gene or several genes (in my case it was COMT (fast), MAOA (fast), and GST/GPX) that are dirty. The author puts great effort into explaining all of these genes. The way they work, what happens when they don't work as intended or get dirty, and what they actually should do at "full power".What I liked the most, that this newly gained knowledge is forced upon you to take instant action. "Soak and Scrub", your two-week plan of lifestyle changes. It definitely helps to clean most of the mess we've created in our genes. The plan puts a huge focus on a sleep schedule, reducing stress, food, supplements, and getting rid of numerous synthetic chemicals we use in our households daily. Also, if you're new to genetics, I highly recommend having a look at this book. The author does a great job explaining most of the nuances in a simple manner.

I am so grateful for DIRTY GENES and Dr. Ben's perspective, voice and research. Navigating the world of chronic illness can be very overwhelming. It requires research, terminology and a lot of wading through vast amounts of information to find what works, what is affordable and what is the best treatment available.DIRTY GENES wades through all that and presents complex information from epigenetics in a way that anyone can understand. His common sense approach will save lives. We live in a world that is fast-paced, filled with chemicals and we expect so much of our bodies! Dr. Ben Lynch's DIRTY GENES is a reminder that we need to stop, slow down and pay attention because our genes really want to work for us. Dr. Lynch is the only person qualified to write such a book...and the world is a better place because of it. DIRTY GENES is the first *truly* holistic book available!

I began studying epigenetics about a year and a half ago, after some seemingly random health issues surface in my family. Understanding the methylation process is a lot like falling down a "rabbit hole," to say the least. I wish that this book had been available when I started researching these issues, it would have eased my mind tremendously, and saved me so much time and energy! Dr. Lynch organized an enormous amount of complicated information into an easy to understand guide, and also, laid out a comprehensive diet, lifestyle and supplementation plan that anyone can follow in these pages. I've personally experienced how great an impact the protocols that he suggests can have on an individuals health. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ANY health concerns, to anyone who has ANY family history of health issues, or to anyone who is simply interested in living a healthier lifestyle.

What a wealth of information. My brain is spinning, but I came away from this book feeling like I have tools. There are no quick fixes, but with a map you can take control and make progress, and this book was a great map--perhaps incomplete, but very helpful nonetheless. The resource chapter alone was worth the purchase in my opinion. I was also really impressed how Dr. Lynch laid out the structure of the book. It was easy to follow and while epigenetics is very techincal and so many details to follow, I never felt like I got bogged down to the point where I felt discouraged or that the information was inaccessible to an average layperson trying to educate themselves. He is obviously a very genuine person and his passion comes through on the pages much like it does in his live videos. Loved it!
