Do Hard Things Audiobook Summary

National Bestseller

“In Do Hard Things, Steve Magness beautifully and persuasively reimagines our understanding of toughness. This is a must-read for parents and coaches and anyone else looking to prepare for life’s biggest challenges.” — Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers and Talking to Strangers and host of the Revisionist History podcast

From beloved performance expert, executive coach, and coauthor of Peak Performance Steve Magness comes a radical rethinking of how we perceive toughness and what it means to achieve our high ambitions in the face of hard things.

Toughness has long been held as the key to overcoming a challenge and achieving greatness, whether it is on the sports field, at a boardroom, or at the dining room table. Yet, the prevailing model has promoted a mentality based on fear, false bravado, and hiding any sign of weakness. In other words, the old model of toughness has failed us.

Steve Magness, a performance scientist who coaches Olympic athletes, rebuilds our broken model of resilience with one grounded in the latest science and psychology. In Do Hard Things, Magness teaches us how we can work with our body – how experiencing discomfort, leaning in, paying attention, and creating space to take thoughtful action can be the true indications of cultivating inner strength. He offers four core pillars to cultivate such resilience:

  • Pillar 1- Ditch the Facade, Embrace Reality
  • Pillar 2- Listen to Your Body
  • Pillar 3- Respond, Instead of React
  • Pillar 4- Transcend Discomfort

Smart and wise all at once, Magness flips the script on what it means to be resilient. Drawing from mindfulness, military case studies, sports psychology, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy, he provides a roadmap for navigating life’s challenges and achieving high performance that makes us happier, more successful, and, ultimately, better people.

Magness found the perfect mix of personal narrative, studies and evaluation to round out this book. He included his experience as runner, but did not just rely on his own ideas. He backed up his ideas with supporting stories and research articles. It read well through out. I liked how the book is structured to explain a concept and also have take aways. It was slightly athlete focused, however he does give examples from other areas so it’s still relevant for everyone. My favorite quote from the first chapter that really sets up (and summarizes) the book: “Real toughness is experiencing discomfort or distress, leaning in, paying attention, and creating space to take thoughtful action. It’s navigating discomfort to make the best decision possible.” The ideas presented will move you away from “tough it out” and into tuning into your body and mind to make the hard decisions. Thank you Netgalley and HarperOne for the ARC. Also posted on www.shelbygreads.wordpress.com

Steve Magness takes us on a journey toward redefining “toughness”. This is an interesting, science based examination of the concept of “toughness”. “Old School” tells us to persevere and push through. If you don’t, you are weak. Having coached high school athletes for 30+ years, this never rang true for me. Magness offers a different perspective that rings true to my personal experience. One passage, near the end of the book, encapsulates his thinking:“We’re able to make meaning out of struggle, out of suffering. Meaning is the glue that holds our minds together, allowing us to both respond and recover. It stalls the jump from difficulty to complete despair, from fear and anxiety to full-blown freak out.”A solid read

Excellent reconceptualization of what embodies true strength of mind and the will to persist. Magness shows how we can reframe our mindset to emphasize cognitive flexibility, an understanding of purpose, and a focus on the whole person and relationships to drive our success and satisfaction.

At the midpoint of 2022, this is my favorite read of the year. There is so much depth here in getting outside of what we’ve known as toughness and bringing out the best in ourselves, our teammates and our children.

This is a book I will want on hand on regular occasions for teaching, coaching, parenting, and just navigating life.

This book loses a tiny bit of steam at the end, as Magness turns to more general ideas and less specific actions. Much of this was new to me, and the mix of stories and science gave it a good mix of applicability and accessibility while making a convincing argument.I'd be happy if more coaches (and teachers and parents) read this one, and I'm likely to go back through at least my highlights if not a full re-read, especially of the first 3/4 or so.

A practical, down-to-earth guide on real toughness. The kind of toughness that chooses to accept reality, coexists inside of grit and grace, and that is framed fully in the uniqueness of each individual. Though the context of much of the research is athletics and performance-centric, Magness aptly applies the concepts to business, leadership, education, and everyday life.

This is a wide ranging book from someone who has plenty of experience doing hard things (and not just on the running track). Steve explore the problems with the more widely accepted notion of toughness of ‘machismo’ and the flawed ‘sink versus swim’ approach usually taken in the fields of sports, education and people development fields. He does not promote a particular tool or mindset, but taking an approach based accepting the current reality you are facing, listening to feedback from a wide range of channels (including emotional responses), responding to the situation (and not reacting) and using discomfort to find meaning. There are implications here not just for athletes and their coaches, but also educators, parents, leaders and the regular Joe/Josephine Bloggs of the world. This is a book that readers will come back to time and time again.Key quote:“Real toughness is living in the nuance of complexity of the environment, bodies and minds we inhabit. There is no one standard pathway to inner strength, no formula for making difficult decisions or dealing with the extremes of discomfort. Real toughness is about acceptance: of who you are, what you’re going through, and the discomfort that often comes with it. It’s living in that place of tension so that the needed space can be created to find the best path forward.”

I loved this book! I loved how it was packed with science, but combined with stories and practical takeaways for how to apply it in your own life. It really breaks down the myth of what it means to be tough. Too often we hold onto this idea that we need to grit our way through whatever challenge we face. Magness flips this on its head, telling us to navigate instead of bulldoze. Can't recommend this book enough. As a former athlete who now works in the corporate world, it resonates on both levels. I'm going to have my team read it!

Excellent book that makes you really reflect and learn about having true mental toughness. So many great stories to bring home the points in the book. The last section of the book: Transcend Discomfort is so well written. I will be returning to this book again as I continue to work on my mental toughness journey!

A strong argument against the authoritarian principles many use in leadership, and the way we view toughness in life and athletics. As a science geek, this work hits home, as the evidence for the development of a more thoughtful approach to resilience is strong. As a late mid-lifer and lifetime distance runner, it also strikes as chord with my experience. I recommend it for any who are coaches, athletes, teachers, parents, leaders or wanna be leaders.

At first glance it might feel like a set of boring truisms, and actually it is. However, with a proper wording and some references it's a pretty solid pack to build a proper view on endurance in general. In short, it does not necessary need to be hard or exhausting, it should be boring instead. Toughness is an ability to deal with boring stuff on a large scale.

Unveiling the real nuisances in what cultivates toughness. I love and appreciate all the nuggets of other expert writings Magness has collected in Do Hard Things related to the subject. I’ve read and respected the expanded ideas of nearly all of them. Real toughness takes way more mindful preparation than impromptu, stubborn knuckling down.
