Duchess in Love Audiobook Summary

A Duke in Retreat

Gina was forced into marriage with the Duke of Girton at an age when she’d have been better off in a schoolroom than a ballroom. Directly after the ceremony her handsome spouse promptly fled to the continent, leaving the marriage unconsummated and Gina quite indignant.

A Lady In the Middle

Now, she is one of the most well-known ladies in London … living on the edge of scandal–desired by many men, but resisting giving herself to any one.

A Duchess in Love

Finally, Camden, the Duke of Girton, has returned home, to discover that his naive bride has blossomed into the toast of the ton. Which leaves Cam in the most uncomfortable position of discovering that he has the bad manners to be falling in love–with his own wife!

4 Estrellitas.

Once again, Eloisa James has dragged me out of my reading slump with a beautifully written historical romance that I couldn't bear to put down.

Too much drama at the end, but, overall, this was the best balanced of the James's books I've read in that I was into ALL the storylines.I also liked that it depicted the reality that ton marriages weren't always that great, lots of married people didn't live together, slept with other people. Don't get me wrong, I love my happy romances, but that realism is something I've missed in a lot of Regency romances. And it was an interesting take on the estranged marriage trope. This was a about a couple who never had a real marriage, so it was about falling in love for the first time. With your spouse. Which was fun!I think I would've given it five stars if it had had a strong ending.

First I want to say it took me a long while to finish this book because I was busy adjusting to my work (I'm new at it^^)You can say I didn't have any practically favorite characters, but instead I had favorites stories. From my perspective I divided the book to 3 segments, one is the main story that's focused on the main couple, our esteemed Duke and his Duchess. Two was about her best friend Lady Esme and the fiancee the Marquess, three is her other friend Lady Carola and Tuppy. I liked the first and last ones. It was nice to see the development between the married couple, like the main ones who were married for 12 yrs! but havent seen each other all this time, only to realize that each one became a paragon of beauty in each other's eye. the Third couple was the most adorable and foolish couple, and I liked how the author shed light of the other couples without stealing the light from the main ones. However the second couple were the one I honestly found distasteful, not from a story or writing perspective, but from a personal one, like I can't imagine my fiancee being together with my own best friend! since the beginning I hated the Marquess, he was such a hypocrite and oh-so-self-righteous like it was fine for him to flirt with the best friend but it wasn't fine for his betrothed to flirt with her own husband?!- Oh yeah one of the most amusing and awkward scenes that kinda stuck to me was the introduction, since then I kept wondering didn't the heroine feel awkward introducing the men to each other one as her husband and the other as her fiance?- I have to say the scene when Esme's husband died I shed couple of tears and literally couldn't see what I have been reading.I way things ended were nice and smooth, I liked the epilogue and it showed us that Esme had her baby like Gina ^^Overall, *thumbs up*

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, I had watched a Booktuber review this and they talked a lot about how much attention was on the side characters. I didn't think that would interest me but I really liked the side couples (though many of them didn't go the way I wanted...but I have hope for the rest of the series that some things might get resolved). I liked the group of girls and the men. Everyone was amusing and a little ditzy, definitely wouldn't call many of these people smart.

Audio About 90% of this book I would call a romantic screwball comedy then it kind of takes a left turn . But over all I had an enjoyable time.

At an age when she should have still been in a school room, Gina was married off to Camden Serrard, a boy not much older than she was herself. Much to her indignation Cam does not stick around after the wedding, setting of directly for the Continent and vowing to never return. In the mean time Gina manages the estate and becomes the most vibrant woman in all of society; flirting with scandal, but never quite stepping over the line. Twelve years later Cam, now the Duke of Girton, has returned, but only to grant Gina the freedom she needs to marry the man she has fallen in love with. Upon arriving at the house party she is attending Cam spies the most beautiful woman in the room and is shocked to learn that he is admiring none other than his wife. Suddenly the idea of a divorce is not so simple. There are really three stories twisting around each other in this book. Two of the stories are so closely intertwined they could simply be the same story with four characters. The third story is a charming side story that really makes you want to stand up and cheer in the end. There used to be a trend in romance that the hero had to be perfect. Strong and brave, always making the right decision, and always having the perfect timing and appearance. In my humble opinion, that is a very boring premise. No one is perfect. That is probably why I love the current trend in romance: heroes with flaws. This book is a great example of an Alpha Hero with a fear that might not seem very manly. To me, knowing this fear made him all the more perfect in my mind. The sex scenes range from the sensual and steamy to the downright fun and endearing. Where most authors in this genre shy away from playfulness in bedroom scenes, Ms. James shows no such reservations and "dives" right in. *Pun intended for those who have read the story*Overall, this was a very fun book to read. The characters were complex and every time you think you have one of them pinned down, they do or say something that completely bucks you perception. I found myself enjoying the multiple plots, despite my usual preference to simplicity of story, and kept wanting to hear more and more about one character or another. This approach really helps you develop a bond with the characters.

This is about sad women, manipulation and ignorance. The main couple are a self indulgent man, he was not a Hero. He ran away when he was 18 leaving his 11 year old bride. He responded badly but it was understandable then but he left her to manage his responsibilities for years. She grew up fast, she did was was needed for his estates and his people. She's a delight, kind and caring, she deserved a hero sadly she didn't get one. Nor the any of the other 3 wallflowers. Their stories are tragic and hope they find some happiness in next books.

Eloisa James's trademark historical novel is very chaotic. There's a lot of information being thrown at the reader in the beginning, and a lot of characters to meet. From there, this book doesn't proceed like a typical romance novel. It's not unusual for there to be a romantic subplot, but this book had 2 of them, making 3 romances altogether! I'll say one thing: you never get bored with this book. The primary romance is the one described in the synopsis: Gina and Cam have been separated for 12 years, and she asks him for an annulment so that she can marry someone whom she truly cares about and who cares about her. However, as soon as Cam arrives in England to sign the annulment, he falls madly in lust with his wife. Shenanigans ensue. Gina was an extremely likable character. Despite being a virgin, she is not shy about her sexuality, which I very much appreciate. One can only read so many romances about dumb virgins, and reading about one who not only knew what the marital act entailed but desired it was refreshing! Add to this that she was intelligent and capable and strong, having run her husband's estate for the last dozen years, and she's a brilliant heroine. Cam was likable too, and he eventually comes to terms with his responsibilities, but there wasn't a lot of time spent on him because James spent so much time on the other romances. He wasn't as fleshed out as he could've been. Also, his fear of the dark is cured by true love. That made me throw up in my mouth a little. The secondary romance is between Esme, a woman who acts more promiscuous than she is, and Gina's uptight fiancé. I despised these two. First of all, the Marquess Bonnington gave me "Hellfire" Judge Frollo vibes. He preached modesty all the time, but was drawn to the sexy Esme while constantly putting down his fiancé. We are also led to believe this transformation has been recent, as before he inherited his title, he was a fairly normal man with normal desires. However, readers will be hard-pressed to say if he's worse than Esme. The bitch not only openly flirts with her best friend's fiancé but also her husband! She might not have slept with as many men as she pretends, but she knows no boundaries, and that is unforgivable in my mind. These two are a horrible pair, and I rather liked their ending in this story, which is what saved it for me.Carola Perwinkle and "Tuppy" Perwinkle are the third romance, but their relationship is more of an afterthought. They argue a lot. He calls her fat (and never apologizes for it), only ever wants to fish, and is bad at pleasing his wife. Then, one day, Carola decides she wants Tuppy back, for no discernible reason. It's also clear that literally nothing will change in their relationship: all he wants to do is fish, and his love-making abilities are the same as before, only somehow Carola is into it. With no explanation. Personally, I think she should've ended up with Neville. The two had things in common, and he genuinely cared about her. He might've succeeded too, if he gave her an orgasm first. That is James's favorite way to resolve arguments in her books: orgasms. Are the issues still unresolved? Yes. Is the relationship still pretty toxic? Yes, but at least they had good sex, I guess. A lot of people dislike this book because the story centers around three women estranged from their husbands, people having relationships outside of those marriages, and then even more confusing passions as the book goes on. Honestly, this didn't bother me that much because 1) it's commonly known that aristocratic marriages back in the day weren't love matches and that adultery was allowed, if it was discreet and 2) the book is so silly that you can't take it seriously. I've read other romances where the tone is a lot more serious, and the adulterous relationships in those are much more disturbing, as a result. Truly, what makes this book is the light-hearted tone. Duchess in Love doesn't take itself too seriously, which is why this book is so entertaining, despite its content. I recommend this book if you just want some fun. Don't read too much into it, or you'll get a headache. Just enjoy the ride.

4.5 starsI really enjoyed this, but I do think that ultimately it was a littletoo much. Some things were just superfluous;Whilst I understand that future books in the series were set up in this one, several of the characters annoyed me through their sheer presence alone - Helene, for example, grated on me because she added absolutely nothing to the story, most especially because she just showed up halfway through the book for no apparent reason. In fact, her interaction with the main characters was practically nonexistent. I don't even understand why the author chose to introduce her in this book, as we learn very little about her character. So you see? Superfluous! There were other things added to the story that seemed to do nothing but accumulate into excess of words and bulk of pages. The ending? Why couldn't Cam return and demand to know what was going on and force Sebastian to give up Gina as a cover story, rather than ending up in Greece? Oh, what's that? Excessive! These things aside, Gina and Cam were great characters who fit together perfectly in both personality and chemistry, and I really loved the fact that they behaved as good friends in the beginning, whilst still referring to each other as husband and wife ever so nonchalantly - it made for a fun basis for their relationship, that I really enjoyed reading about. I would very much recommend.
