Eartheater Audiobook Summary

NAMED A “FALL 2020 MUST-READ” AND ONE OF THE “BEST BOOKS OF FALL 2020” BY TIME, VULTURE, THE BOSTON GLOBE, WIRED, COSMOPOLITAN AND MORE

Electrifying and provocative, visceral and profound, a powerful literary debut novel about a young woman whose compulsion to eat earth gives her visions of murdered and missing people–an imaginative synthesis of mystery and magical realism that explores the dark tragedies of ordinary lives.

Set in an unnamed slum in contemporary Argentina, Eartheater is the story of a young woman who finds herself drawn to eating the earth–a compulsion that gives her visions of broken and lost lives. With her first taste of dirt, she learns the horrifying truth of her mother’s death. Disturbed by what she witnesses, the woman keeps her visions to herself. But when Eartheater begins an unlikely relationship with a withdrawn police officer, word of her ability begins to spread, and soon desperate members of her community beg for her help, anxious to uncover the truth about their own loved ones.

Surreal and haunting, spare yet complex, Eartheater is a dark, emotionally resonant tale told from a feminist perspective that brilliantly explores the stories of those left behind–the women enduring the pain of uncertainty, whose lives have been shaped by violence and loss.

This remarkable novel gives voice to a character unlike any I've ever met before. The young woman at the center of the story is unnamed and impoverished, and she has a terrible skill thrust on her: After her mother dies violently, this young woman develops a compulsion to eat earth, and the ingested earth gives her a true vision of how her mother died. Soon everyone has heard about and believes in her eerie skill. As she's living in an Argentinian slum where loved ones regularly disappear, and where violence toward women is an everyday fact, she is inundated with petitions for help. How she navigates a world where she is both shunned and respected is an extraordinary reading journey. The first-person voice of the protagonist is what makes the story so compelling: uncomplaining, clear-sighted, compassionate. A one-of-a-kind novel.

No he parado de llorar.

I thought going in this was going to be a sort of cultural tourism thing with an eating disorder, and... I was so wrong! It's a loving, angry, sad, proud look at a culture and a reality that I think can speak to all of us.CONTENT WARNING: (view spoiler)[ rape, murder, misogyny, pedophilia, drug and alcohol use, loss of loved ones, domestic violence, eating disorders (sort of), and refugee status. (hide spoiler)]Things to love:-Women who love men. There's a joke a comedian told where they knew sexuality wasn't a choice because why the hell would women choose to pursue men if anything else were an option. And this was all of that but without the laughs. The dual consciousness of loving certain men, of wanting to be intimate, of knowing they're safe or respectful or what have you *to you at least* and also knowing that others are just looking for the right moment to hurt you or someone else is exceptionally well captured here. It's messy and hurt and chilly and loving all at once.-The magic. The Bruja traditions are woven in deftly, adding a layer of mysticism and feverishness to an already chaotic setting. You can see how this environment would work well with this sort of lore.-No answers. So often books like this feel so personal and angry or preachy, which is totally valid but also sometimes breaks immersion. This book doesn't do any of the work for you. It just offers up facts and consequences and lets you do with them what you will, which feels very effective in this instance.I'm trying to pin down what made it different from a book I "love" and I think it's a few things. The translator does a great translator's note that explained some of the choices, but it wasn't exactly "perfect" for my American reading style. That is minor though. Another minor thing is that it's a sideways sort of story with a sideways progression of events and it sometimes left me a bit out of joint. Not in a bad way, just it kept me wondering about meta elements which then meant some of my attention was not on the details. I'm also ambivalent about the ending which I think is in part another stroke of genius but also is vaguely unsatisfying. In short, I think this is brilliant but maybe I didn't love the experience of reading it, if that makes sense. I hope it does, because it's what I've got! Go read it and be all spun about yourself!

It is not earth-shattering to hear that women—those who are poor, unlearned, and powerless—die horrifically, and are forgotten. But it should be. The earth should cry out for justice. In Argentinean writer Delores Reyes debut novel, the earth does just that. The totally unique narrator is blessed, or more likely cursed, with a very special gift—by eating the earth, she connects with violated female bodies,This Earth-Eater understands that the worst of all thing is not knowing. She is the daughter of a mother who died violently and fends for herself along with her barely older brother Walter. When a young and much-loved teacher goes missing, the Earth-Easter , she eats the earth in the schoolyard and a clear and horribly disturbing picture emerges as to how this teacher met her end. Her reputation as a clairvoyant is cemented. As her fame grows, unconsoled relatives bring bottles of earth to her with the hopes that they can, if need be, finally say goodbye. Part magical realism, part suspense, and part coming-of-age, Delores Reyes’ novel presents an unflinching portrait of how we, as women, eat the experience of others along with passionate plea to never give into a helplessness in fighting against feminicide. A big thanks to HarperVia for enabling me to be an early reader in exchange for an honest review.

3.5/5⭐️*translated from Spanish*Eartheater is a bizarre novel thats sensitive and compulsive. The unnamed narrator is our protagonist who feels compelled to eat dirt after her mother dies. From that act, she “sees” the truth behind her mother’s death. Yes, she gets visions after eating the dirt, Earth. She is the Eartheater. Abandoned by her father, she lives with her aunt and her brother Walter. Word gets out and people visit her with jars of dirt looking for answers.Ezekiel, a police officer is looking for his sister Maria. She is alive and well in Eartheater’s visions, but the mystery slowly unveils. I’m still not sure how I completely feel about the novel and characters, but its a captivating story. I wish the author included the history behind these Eartheaters. Thank you Netgalley & HarperVia for the arc in exchange for an honest opinion.

Me gustó.

Rating: 4.5Man this was a whirlwind. It's been awhile since I've been absolutely sucked into a book. The unnamed main character and her brother live in a poor slum of Argentina where things are a little rough around the edges. The main character finds out at a young age that when she eats earth, the earth tells her stories of what has happened to people. The rest of the community finds this out and start bringing her dirt that is tied to people who are missing or have died without knowing how. That's as much as I'll give away.I absolutely loved how grounded in reality the story is. Even though our main character has this fantastic ability, this story isn't a superhero story. Our main character isn't trying to save the world from some unspeakable evil. She's trying to keep herself and brother alive in a world where things can turn quickly.Honestly, I don't think I've ever read a book with a voice quite like this main character. And I hope to read more from Reyes.

I am a typically slow reader, one that savors the words carefully written by these wonderful authors. That being said, I ripped through this book in record time for me (One day!) Of course I didn't have as many distractions as I usually have, but getting back to this enchanting book! Sra Delores Reyes, and her translator, Julia Sanches, had me spellbound from the minute I opened the book, to the end. And I want more!! I do hope they continue with this, as I felt I was left to my own poor imagination. I'm really looking forward to more from these ladies! Bravo!!!
