La joven Ilona esconde un pasado terrible en su Hungria natal, sometida al terror sovietico. Es una mujer zarandeada por el destino. En Barcelona, conoce a Miguel. Ademas de vivir un gran amor con el, este le ensena oficio de luthier. La felicidad se rompe cuando Ilona viaja a Budapest y permanece alli un largo periodo de tiempo para cuidar a su madre.
Otto le pide a Ilona que dediquen su tiempo a fabricar un violonchelo y esta ocupacion se convierte para el anciano en lo mas importante de su vida. Ilona tiene otros intereses: reconstruir su relacion con Miguel.
Durante tres meses, las vidas de Clea, Otto e Ilona se entrelazan, se llenan de confidencias, de secretos, de verdades a medias, de medias mentiras, de descubrimientos, y acaban formando un mosaico en el que nada es lo que parece. El violonchelo sera en ultima instancia el desencadenante que los protagonistas esperan para encauzar la segunda oportunidad de sus vidas y retomar los cabos sueltos que les impedian a cada uno, por distintos motivos, ser felices.
