Ano 1496. La infanta Juana se dirige a Flandes para casarse con el archiduque Felipe de Habsburgo. Con ella viaja el juego trobado, una baraja poetica que la reina Isabel le ha regalado. Los naipes retratan a las damas que los juegan con cuatro suertes: un arbol, un ave, un refran y un romance. A Juana la representan el naranjo, en alusion a la boda, y la elegante garza, que exalta su belleza. La novia parte de Castilla dispuesta a cumplir los designios dinasticos de los reyes. Se lleva con ella a dos de sus damas mas queridas, dona Maria Manuel, rosa efimera; y dona Ana de Beaumont, cipres siempre verde. El relato acompana a las tres mujeres desde su llegada a Flandes hasta el nombramiento, en 1500, de Juana como heredera de las coronas de Castilla y Aragon. En estos cinco anos el juego trobado les sirve de oraculo ilicito y de consuelo. Los naipes entretienen a las amigas en los dias lluviosos, predicen la suerte de amores y las guian en la marana de intrigas cortesanas. Los palacios flamencos son autenticos hervideros de maquinaciones que ponen a prueba el matrimonio de Juana y el futuro de la dinastia Trastamara. Los Reyes Catolicos quieren aislar a Francia, pero Felipe discrepa y ve en su esposa castellana el instrumento perfecto para oponerse a la voluntad de sus suegros. Estos son, para Juana, los anos decisivos: pasa de ser una joven obediente a una princesa a la que hay que controlar. La muerte de sus hermanos la ha convertido en inesperada heredera y en puerta de entrada de los Habsburgo en Espana. Y el juego trobado nos los cuenta todo.
