Like lots of folks on Twitter, I follow Kelly Oxford . So when I saw that Edelweiss was offering an Advance Reading Copy of her book, Everything is Perfect When You're A Liar, I requested it ... with more than a little trepidation. Turns out, I shouldn't have been nervous - it's a really good, interesting read. The reason Oxford has about 430,000 followers on Twitter is that she's funny. Often very funny - and has gotten the attention of some pretty famous folks who retweet her. I know I found her because Roger Ebert retweets her a lot, and there's even a part in her book about the fact that David Copperfield is a big fan of hers on Twitter. Here's a recent sample:When do we find out that all this 'coconut water' is just sexy Hawaiian people spit?— kelly oxford (@kellyoxford) January 3, 2013The thing that made me nervous ... well, there were two things. One, 140 characters isn't necessarily the best gauge for whether someone will be interesting for 350 pages. And two, I've been burned a LOT by biographies/memoirs of comedians lately. Good comedians, like David Cross and Jen Kirkman, write books I can't begin to finish. But Everything is Perfect When You're A Liar does something smart and interesting - Oxford starts at the beginning, of course, when she was an awkward kid with unearned self confidence (she thinks she should be a famous model, despite huge glasses, bad hair and no sense of fashion) - and then skips over most of the important moments in her life. There's no, "And then I MADE it as a model!" "And then I got my first boyfriend!" "Here's what it was like to have my babies! All three of them!"We just skip to a point in her life where that's happened...and it's SO refreshing. Let's be clear - I could give less than two shits about what it was like when a boy asked her out in the eighth grade. Or what it was like to be a model. And Oxford clearly knows that.Instead, she tells random stories that sewn together provide a good idea of what she's like (spoiler alert - I don't want to be her best friend, she's honest about not always being a terrific person), and some often quite funny moments from her life. Highlights include the David Copperfield story, her experience helping patients with short-term memory brain injuries (and the reason she gets into this field is pitch perfect), as well as her trip to Los Angeles as a 19-year old determined to find a mostly undiscovered Leonardo DiCaprio to make him her boyfriend. Yeah, you read that right - it's funny, trust me. At some point she's married, and at other points children start popping up. Oxford is one of Twitter's success stories - she's moved her family to Los Angeles from Canada to write for TV and movies and largely was discovered from Twitter. And she deserves it - she is FUNNY, and clever and smart. And her book is all of those things.Give it a shot, and thanks to Edelweiss for the advance copy!

I always love finishing a book and seeing that most other reviewers disagree with me. I absolutely loved this book, so much that I ordered a hard copy for my bookshelves. The beginning of the book had me laughing like I've never laughed at a book before. I have a specific sense of humor, and this is it. The way Kelly describes her hilarious childhood events just had me belly-laughing with tears on my cheeks. As it progressed, it was still funny, but it moved into a range of different topics. Its stories basically evolved from childhood, to the high AF/party days of emerging adulthood, to being a badass, intelligent, and hilarious wife, writer, and mother. Most funny books for young women my age are all about the drunken antics, which is all well and good for the research purposes, but we have enough stories about educated post-college white girls hooking up with strangers. It's not that unique, and when are you going to grow up? It's good to see someone who has moved past that point and done something with that creative energy. You can see she's a self-actualized woman with her own well-delivered and acerbic opinions. And she doesn't give a fuck what you think. I envy that! I honestly can say that I have a massive girl crush on Kelly Oxford now, in an intellectual way. She's a few years older than me, but I saw so much of myself in her stories. I like the way she thinks, and she inspired me to get back into my own writing. There's actually depth to this comedy, and I cannot wait for more of her books.

This is a hilarious, profane, sometimes crude and wildly imaginative memoir of critically funny/humiliating moments in the author's life. Some memorable passages: "David Copperfield's assistant Stacy is standing beside the fountain. I know it's Stacy because she's the only woman by the fountain without a feather boa, a necklace with a tiny penis on it, glitter, or a two-foot-tall beverage cup.""The first time I thought about how beautiful Osama Bin Laden's eyes were was in the middle of the night, and the next morning I woke up with the worst UTI of my life. I'm sure the two were connected. I should probably find some cranberry juice later."Some of Oxford's stories are beyond believable, such as whens she orders herself a lap dance in Las Vegas. Others are believable, such as when she peed in her pants at a gas station and had to lie her way out of it to schoolmates and her father. The author is great with similes and metaphors and images of all sorts. It's one of the very few humor books that I've read twice. Usually, once you've read the punchline, funny stories aren't something you want to go back to, but Oxford relates such bizarre, idiosyncratic, personal humiliations that they're worth going back to again.I'd recommend it to anyone with an outrageous sense of humor.

I received this book free through the Good Reads giveaway.I had never heard of Kelly Oxford when I got this book. I have read most, if not all, of the Chelsea Handler books and liked the humor in them, but I didn't love them. I went into this thinking it would be much of the same. While it definitely is humor based, I enjoyed Everything is Perfect When You're a Liar much more than any of the Chelsea books. I actually laughed out loud in many moments of the book, and that's really not something I do while reading. The first 3/4ths of the book contain stories about her childhood, teens and early adult years and my Lord, did they make me laugh. The last 1/4th was more stories about her children and husband, and while I didn't find those quite as funny, they were still an enjoyable read. I also like that she doesn't name drop. The only time she really mentions a celebrity in a wow, look who I know way is in the chapter about David Copperfield, and considering she has to for the story to be told it's fine. This is definitely a great read and I would (and have) recommend it.

This is a really fun memoir of a renegade Canadian girl who is not afraid of pushing the envelope. The book start with her precocious youth and ends with her being a non tradition mom in her thirties. Along the way she goes to Los Angeles to pledge her undying love to Leonardo Di Caprio, meets and greats with David Copperfield in Vegas and has a very unique trip with her kids to Disneyland. The book is funny, fast paced and leaves the reader with a constant - I wonder what she is going to do next feeling. I don't know where her writing career goes from here since this is a memoir but I will be looking forward to what she does next.

So, I've been hearing the buzz about Everything is Perfect When You're a Liar by Kelly Oxford. And, I was looking for a good ab workout like the one I got when I read Let's Pretend this Never Happened by Jenny Lawson. But, I hate to tell y'all this...I didn't LOL once. That's the bad news, the good news is this book is funny. Oxford has a smart mixed with smart alec voice and I found myself smiling or giving the briefest of chuckles throughout the book. So read it, but don't expect six-pack abs when you're done.thisismybookblog.blogspot.com

I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK. If you are a female between the ages of 30-40 / have kids / have ever been to Vegas / have ever had a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio / have ever worked in a video store pre-Blockbuster / have ever felt uncool at school / you just like a quirky sense of humor, then I can't imagine your wouldn't laugh out loud at this book. If you're already a fan of Kelly Oxford on Twitter, this is definitely up your street. Personally, it made me want me want to be her best friend. Hilarious.

started off a bit slow to grab my humor but by a third in I definitely found myself laughing out loud quite frequently, and even cried at one point. Often when I read comedians books I find them hard to relate to and quite full of themselves. I found kelly perfectly human and like many of my best friends.

This book made me laugh out loud and forced me to read passages aloud to my husband. Honestly, that is the best review I can give it. So yes, I really liked it, but I can't quite give it a five star AMAZING, because well, it's just a humor book...

If you don't follow @KellyOxford, you should. You should also read this book. What are you doing with your life that these two things haven't happened yet?

A fun light read, I liked the stories from early in her life best. Would recommend to anyone who needs a role model for not giving a fuck.
