Love the way Jane O'Connor helps kids develop their vocab in a fun an easy way. In this Fancy Nancy book Nancy has to write a book report after selecting a book from the library (select is a fancy word for pick)(: Nancy spends a ton of time making her cover super duper fancy, everyone keeps reminding her that the book report is what's really important. In the end Nancy learns an important lesson about setting priorities and procrastnation.

Early Readers. I love that Fancy Nancy explains the real meaning of some of her fancy words - and that she likes to use fancy words in the first place. Great way to promote vocabulary.

Fancy Nancy is tasked with a book report on Sacajawea but she spends so much time designing and decorating the report that she doesn’t have time to write it. This story showcases bright and detailed hand-drawn pictures of Nancy and her life as she overcomes her problems with the help and guidance of a forgiving teacher and loving mother.Genre: Contemporary Realistic Fiction - The events of Fancy Nancy are believable and expected of a student Nancy’s age, but the characters and events are fictional.Reading Level: JWriting Mentor Trait: Word Choice - Fancy Nancy makes a point of using (and explaining) fancy words to communicate more effectively. Students could try expanding their vocabulary by using synonyms that would more effectively communicate their ideas in their writing.Other Classroom Uses: This book teaches an important message about using your time wisely when given a large project. Reading this would be a great reminder before students start a big class project.

This was a fun book. Nancy and her classmates are each allowed to take a book from the library, with the condition that a book report has to be done on it. Of course Nancy's report has the fanciest cover one can imagine. However when it comes to the words, well... to quote a film (and real life I think). "Houston we have a problem". Of course all things are resolved at the end. One thing to note is that throughout the book Nancy uses words that might not be part of your child's normal speech. Fortunately the meaning is always given, thus this book might enhance your child's vocabulary. Always a good thing, me thinks. In brief a fun book, which your child is likely to enjoy. Happy reading.

This book shows the importance of balancing creativity as well as getting the assignment done. It includes a list of the "Fancy Words" that are used at the end of the book.

Fancy Nancy: The Dazzling Book Report by Jane O'Connor is about a young girl named Nancy who is excited to complete her very first book report. The story begins with the class going to the library to select their book of choice. Nancy is thrilled to learn all about Sacajawea. Nancy went to the arts and crafts store and made the most beautiful cover for her book report. Although her mother told her to complete the words to the book report first, Nancy didn’t listen. When it was time to hand in her report, there were only two sentences! Luckily, Nancy’s teacher allowed her to verbally speak about Sacajawea. Boy was she relieved! I believe that this 32 paged, beginning reading book is a fabulous book for a number of reasons. I like how the author instilled appreciation and love of reading for the reader. For example, when the child reads the book, they will read about how thrilled Nancy was when going to the library. In fact, Nancy describes picking out a new library book as, “It is like getting a present for a week!” Hopefully, this gets the reader excited about books. She goes on to say, “Later Ms. Glass has thrilling news. We get to do a book report!” I love how the author used the word “get” rather than “have to” when the teacher gives an assignment. This simple word difference creates excitement for the students in the class, as well as the child reading the book. I like how Nancy chose the book report to be about Sacajawea, a heroine who was Indian. Because Nancy explored multicultural literature in this book, hopefully the reader, too, will spark interest about Sacajawea or Indian culture. I also like how throughout this book Nancy gives definitions to “fancy” words. Students learn words such as dazzling, biography, desperate, and select. The last page lists “Fancy Nancy’s Fancy Words”. This is an exciting way to describe a glossary for young children. Other books that can be paired with this are other books in the Fancy Nancy series, such as Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy or Fancy Nancy: Tea Parties.

(Included in the Fancy Nancy Storybook Treasury)This may be one of my favorite of the Fancy Nancy early readers. The ones I love are the ones which go a step further not just in entertainment, but in educational value as well and this one does just that. Join Nancy and her class as they go to the library and then work on a book report. Of course Nancy's folder to hold her book report needs to be fancy and time seems to slip away for the actual report part. What I love about this is that the knowledge is there and Nancy's teacher is able to encourage Nancy to participate and share the information in an oral manner and didn't just penalize her for getting distracted on the visual. I think this could be followed with a discussion of following directions on a future assignment. Yet at the same time perhaps Nancy's learning style is to absorb the information as she is preparing and arranging her art. Learning is the ultimate goal and I love how this book portrays that! O'Connor, Jane. (2009). Fancy Nancy: The Dazzling Book Report. New York: HarperCollins. School Library Journal I Can Read This "I Can Read" book is a level 1: Beginning Reader book. It is about a girl who has to do a book report, but she spends too much time on the cover and not enough time on the words. The teacher tells her to just talk about the book instead of reading the one sentence she wrote. The girl is able to tell all about the book she read. I think this is a great book. The girl in the story is very positive about school and excited for all of the lessons the teacher has planned. I think kids who read this will be able to relate and they might start having positive outlooks on lessons. There are tough vocabulary words, but there is a glossary in the back. The way I would use this book in a classroom would be to do a lesson using the vocabulary words in the story. I could work on dictionary skills by having the students look up the words themselves.
