I’m always amazed at how much I enjoy these Fancy Nancy books. (I was never a tomboy type but I also was never a girly girl, especially not the way Nancy is.) And I’m also always surprised that every time I read another Fancy Nancy book, the latest one feels as though it’s my favorite. This story is great. As usual, it’s a great friendship story. It’s also about jealousy and enjoyment for enjoyment’s sake, and ballet, and even a wise mom, and so much more. Reading this aloud/together is likely to foster discussion. As usual, I loved all the synonyms given for various words, as Nancy tells the story, and uses the coolest words she can think of. In this installment readers will learn (or review) some French ballet terms. The illustrations are spectacular. They’re fancy, and beautiful and intricately detailed. I love how there is a painting of ballerinas in the ballet studio, and all the mermaid stuff, the ballet costumes, the dancers, Nancy practicing dance while riding on the shopping cart, and everything really. The book is completely delightful.Despite the one boy in the ballet class and recital, I recommend this book for young girls.4 ½ stars

I know, every time a new Fancy Nancy comes out, I say, "This! is my favorite!" But, I can't help myself. This one is also delightful. All the Fancy Nancys have a moment of deep human angst in the world of a fancy little girl. I spend a lot of time in this world, and Jane O'Connor has captured it perfectly. Nancy and Bree are positive that they will get the mermaid leads in their ballet. They are distraught when Bree is an oyster and Nancy is a tree (BROWN!). When one of the mermaids hurts her foot, she takes the oyster role and Bree gets to be a mermaid. It's all so relevant and sweet, and the parents are lovely people--so nice for a fictional girl to have a mom and a dad in her life.Anyway, I just picked it up at Costco for Marguerite. (This is my daughter who told her grandma, "I'm the only fancy one in my family.") It's sparkly and beautiful and already one of our favorites. Definitely one to own.

My family is a huge fan of Fancy Nancy and all of her glamour. In this book, Fancy Nancy believes herself to be a prima ballerina, but when she is cast as part of the ensemble, she experiences great disappointment in realizing that she may not be the most graceful girl in the class. To make matters worse, when one of the star mermaids has to forfeit her position in the ballet due to an injury, Nancy’s BFF Bree is given the role. How can Nancy balance being both disappointed and happy for her friend at the same time?Fancy Nancy introduces a young audience to a sampling of “wow” vocabulary, alternatives to the mundane. I love to teach vivid vocabulary as it brightens written work and captivates the audience. It is important to introduce this at a young age and get our children thinking about word choice. Also, O’Connor incorporates important themes children may face growing up: friendship and how to deal with jealousy are prevalent and Nancy receives sage advice from her mom on how to navigate these feelings.

If you like to dance and do ballet and you like mermaids then you would like this book.

Oh Fancy Nancy you just get better and better! In this book, Nancy and Bree are super excited that their dance class will be performing a mermaid ballet. Both girls love to dress up as mermaids in their pretend play so they are sure they will be cast as 2 of the leads. O'Connor writes a perfect tale of disappointment, jealousy, and optimism as Nancy and Bree deals with the realities of performing. The pictures are so incredibly beautiful and what I most appreciate about this book is that it will delight die hard Fancy Nancy fans (myself included) and it does a great job modeling a realistic situation (hurt feelings, jealousy) and a good method of dealing with it succesfully. Double bonus is that O'Connor has hit on a subject that is sorely lacking in picture books: quality mermaid stories. Treat yourself to a happy moment and lose yourself in this book!

Another solid installment in the Fancy Nancy series. O'Connor has written a charming (if not entirely new and original) story, but as I always find, Robin Glasser's art is the standout. I love her details, so important in a project like Nancy. And I noticed, perhaps for the first time because she spent so much time in a leotard, that Nancy has a bit of a tummy! So do some of the other girls. Good for Ms. Glasser for not making every character stick thin and being more realistic about shapes and sizes.

Super cute. The story addressed competition and jealousy which are both good topics to address with my 5-year old right now.

This is the first Fancy Nancy book we have read, because my daughter is also in her first ballet which happens to be The Little Mermaid. So it was perfectly fitting for her at this time! I wish we had read the original Fancy Nancy first so we would have had more of an introduction to the characters. We still enjoyed the book however, and found the themes of disappointment and jealousy very relatable for young children. I liked the introduction of “fancy” words and the natural vocabulary building provided.

Fancy Nancy is practicing ballet for the performance. She wants so much to be one of the mermaids, but she is chosen to be a willow tree. She doesn't know how she can be fancy as a tree. When one of the girls can't dance as a mermaid, the role is not given to Fancy Nancy but to one of her friends. Nancy is so disappointed but tries to be happy for her friend. This is a sweet story that shows how to handle disappointment and do the best you can.

** spoiler alert ** I love all of these books. I love the theme of trying to be happy for a friend when you're mostly feeling jealous. I cannot, however, get over the fact that Nancy is a tree! WHAT?!?! This bugs my kids and I every single time. It's an underwater play...all of the other characters are sharks, mermaids, oysters...and she's a tree?!?!? GAH!

Another beautiful work by Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser.Nancy is upset when she doesn't get a better part than her best friend Bree in their ballet company production. Through the guidance of her mother she champions her 'lesser' part to overcome her feelings of jealousy and discovers that friendship, inclusion and teamwork are far better traits than selfishness.

The lesson in this one is about jealousy and I love the way it's written - so simple without being preachy. And of course we love the language in Fancy Nancy books, as well as the adorable illustrations.

My 6 year old granddaughter loves Beautiful, colorful and spirited Fancy Nancy books. Ballet is a favorite theme for her. She was able to put letters and sounds together in this story. She'll be reading soon. This was a fun engaging book to read together with her.

I love that Fancy Nancy is outrageously dramatic without being an abominable brat. She doesn't always get her own way, and while she's upset about it, she doesn't throw a hissy fit. She learns to be happy when something good happens to someone else that she wanted herself.
