Fancy Nancy: Splendid Speller Audiobook Summary

Young readers will relate to Nancy’s test-taking dilemma in this Fancy Nancy I Can Read story from New York Times bestselling team Jane O’Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser.

Nancy loves spelling. She can spell fun words like “happy” and French words like chien (that means “dog”) and even long words like “splendid.” But when Ms. Glass’s spelling test is harder than Nancy anticipated, the self-professed spelling prodigy faces a tough decision that pits her pride against her principles.

Fancy Nancy: Splendid Speller is a Level One I Can Read book, which means it’s perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences. The back matter features a list of the rich vocabulary words that are used throughout the story along with their definition.

Nancy and her Friend are Splendid Spellers, or so they think until they have their spelling test. They actually are good spellers and they do practice all week on their words. I enjoy the way Nancy incorporates spelling her words into her normal day talking with people. She is precocious. Both kids are good spellers and they actually enjoy their spelling words, well, once they sit down to do them. They would rather be playing, honestly. Giggle is a good word in her. Jane is so whimsical. Again, the nephew wouldn’t read this story, but the niece read it on her own. She told me it was good and she gave it 3 stars.

We used this book as an introduction to a spelling bee. Now we're trying to be "splendid spellers" like Fancy Nancy by choosing a word to spell out of each story we read. Good readers are not always good spellers, but I think this idea of "couch spelling" is a really great way to help kids become more conscientious of word make up and helps turn good readers into good spellers. Plus, the book has a really good lesson about how bad it can feel to cheat.

Nancy and her friend think that they are best spellers in school. But when Nancy realises on her test she is unable to spell a word she is tempted to copy from her friend.A real good book which teaches kids it is ok not to know and make a mistake.

There's an extra moral in this story, as Nancy is tempted to cheat on her spelling test and then feels guilty about it. I like the way it was handled.

Fancy Nancy is proud of her spelling ability! She's got good reason to be, but even splendid spellers can make mistakes! A fun book about the pressures of wanting to be the best, this book explains cheating and guilt in such a way that kids can understand what's going on. One of my daughter's favorite books!

I liked that even though Fancy Nancy was tempted to cheat she didn't.
