3.5 - 4 stars! Not as exciting as the first two short stories, but definitely worth reading. "I will not be a pawn, not for them ... and not for my father; I will not belong to anyone but myself." The Son follows Four as he struggles to find his place in the hierarchy of Dauntless. We see him train for a leadership position mentioned in Divergent, and why he really made the choice of becoming an instructor instead. Someone´s breaking into his new room, leaving an unnamed note at the same time Four starts suspecting foul play and Jeanine Matthews seems to be stopping by more often. "On the day you hated most At the time when she died In the place where you first jumped on." Four shows us just how smart and strong he truly is, while it becomes clear why he really needs someone like Tris in his life. "But then I stopped allowing myself to dream, because it was more painful to long for things and never get them than to deal with whatever was in front of me."

Q: You can be more than either, more than any faction. (c)Q: “I’m getting the feeling you enjoy putting yourself through the wringer.” (c)So, how do the Dauntless work through the PTSD? And throught being 'really a Stiff'? Q:The Dauntless lottery was kind to me, because I was ranked first, and because unlike my outgoing fellow initiates, I wanted to live alone. (c)Q:I’ve never even thought about whether I wanted to date anyone; it was such an impossibility. (c)Q:... maybe here, in Dauntless, bravery is the highest form of wisdom, the acknowledgment that life can and should be lived without fear. (c)Q:... it’s hard not to be distracted by the view from the windows behind her—from this angle, the Pire displays the city’s skyline, the prongs of the Hub piercing the sky, the marsh peeking from between the glimmering buildings. (c)Q:I don’t start at the beginning of the code and make my way down—instead, I look for the innermost kernel of code inside all the wrappers. There, I notice that the line of code finishes in the wrong place. I mark the spot and press the arrow button that will allow me to continue the exam if I’m right. The screen changes, presenting me with a new program.I raise my eyebrows. I must have absorbed more than I thought.I start the next one in the same way, moving from the center of the code to the outside, checking the top of the program with the bottom, paying attention to quotation marks and periods and backslashes. Looking for code errors is strangely soothing, just a way of making sure that the world is still in the same order it’s supposed to be, and as long as it is, everything will run smoothly. (c)Q:... I grew up searching, scanning, watching for details in my surroundings. (c)Q:I cross my arms and put my shoulders back, trying to look as big and strong and tough as possible. It’s easier now, in Dauntless black, than it ever was in Abnegation gray, and maybe that’s why I chose Dauntless as a haven. Not out of spite, not to hurt Marcus, but because I knew this life would teach me a stronger way to be. (c)Q:... the Dauntless flames being cupped by Abnegation hands, the Amity tree roots growing beneath an Erudite eye, which is balanced under the Candor scales. All the faction symbols stacked on top of each other. (c)

These short-stories by Veronica Roth are more interesting than the entire Divergent series IMO. May be it has something to do with my love for Four and these short-stories are from his POV. The Son shows us how strong Four is and also how broken he was when he learns the truth about who was breaking into his room. An emotional but amazing read.Four and a half stars.

So before I reviewed the last book/part I should have read this one first. I am so impressed by Veronica's writing ability. Everything that I wish was different because it was "boring" or "simple" had a purpose behind it and was explained in this book. Wow! She is a great writer and this book is very addictive. I like these books way more than 2nd and 3rd books in the trilogy.

Book 3 in series of novellas in Four POV. This book takes us into Four introduction to leadership training. He also meets up with someone that leaves a mysterious note in his apartment. He is also still adjusting to not being a stiff. Things come to light about the different factions and he has to decide if he wants to be controlled or take control.

This is yet another great story about Four. I sort of wish the entire Divergent series had been about Four instead of Tris--he's much more nuanced, more complex. And I really just love him as a character. I'm glad we get to see glimpses into his story!

It emphasises the importance of being in charge and calling the shots in your life. It reminded of something a friend of mine usually says: "you are the main character in your own story..."
