Getting the Pretty Back Audiobook Summary

The iconic Molly Ringwald shares intimate stories and candid advice in this fun, stylish, and sexy girlfriend’s guide to life.

To her millions of fans Molly Ringwald will forever be sixteen. As the endearing and witty star of the beloved John Hughes classics Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink, Molly defined teenage angst, love, and heartbreak. While remembered eternally as the enviable high school princess Claire, or the shyly vulnerable Samantha, Molly is now a wife and mother, and just celebrated her fortieth birthday. Facing a completely new, angst-inducing time in her life, she is embracing being a woman, wife, mother of three, actress, and best friend with her trademark style, candor, and humor.

In this book Molly encourages every woman to become “the sexiest, funniest, smartest, best-dressed, and most confident woman that you can be” by sharing personal anecdotes and entertaining insights about the struggle to get through the murky milestones and identity issues that crop up long after prom ends. Whether she’s discussing sex and beauty, personal style, travel and entertaining, motherhood, or friendship, Molly embodies the spirit of being fabulous at every age, and reminds us all that prettiness is a state of mind: it’s “the part of you that knows what you really want, that takes risks.”

Getting the Pretty Back is sure to charm women of all ages with its unforgettably personal, refreshingly outspoken take on life, love, and, of course, finding that perfect red lipstick. . . .

I enjoyed Molly Ringwald's autobiography. She focuses on the reader more than herself. I liked that aspect about it. I also enjoy the chick lit feel with fun illustrations and helpful hints. The book is obviously geared for women of my generation (Gen X) and I felt like she was speaking to me. (Sounds cheesy, I know.) But she wrote a good book. Because of her tips on cheese, dinner parties, and wine, I will most likely purchase a copy of this book. The only reason I gave this book four instead of five stars is because I would have liked to have seen more photographs of Molly and her cool vintage outfits from the 1980s and her time spent in France.

Molly Ringwald offered some practical and not so relevant to my interest advice in a clear and easy to digest manner.

I really enjoyed this book. I have always been a huge fan of Molly Ringwald. It was fun to hear her take on so many issues. She was spot on!

I hate to admit it, but I really liked this one. The only thing that bothered me is that she doesn't seem to realize that we are not all famous actresses who can afford anything we want. It really makes no difference to me whether Burberry or Prada makes a better trench coat. Mine will be coming from Nordstrom. That said, she makes some great points about remembering who you are when life keeps getting in the way.

Wow, people have been very hard on this book, so I wasn't expecting much. I picked it up at a library book sale because I occasionally read celebrity memoirs about people that I relate to in some way. Since Molly and I are similar in age (I'm a bit older) and she starred in so many of the iconic movies of my youth, I thought it would be in interesting book to read. I have to say that I did rather enjoy it. Of course I can't relate to her jet-setting celebrity life style, but this book was still a light and fun look at adulting. Did I learn much usable information that is relevant to me? Only a little. But I mainly read for entertainment and Molly Ringwald has been talented in providing entertainment for several decades. Therefore, I have no complaints! Also, this book contains many very excellent, whimsical illustrations scattered throughout the book done by Ruben Toledo.

I really liked this book more than I thought I would. I know Molly through her acting in films when I was younger, films like 16 candles, Pretty in pink and Breakfast Club, and liked her enough in these roles. As a author though, I LOVE her. Writing in the manner of a friend imparting knowledge she has gained through her life, this book was fantastic, even I considered taking on board some of the hints and tips Molly passed on, something I am not usually known for doing after reading self-help books.

A great book!I admit I love Molly Ringwald, still do since the 80s. I know this book was written for women, but found what I was hoping for - first person about many things in her life and about her. The book also happens to be smart, witty, touching, down to earth, authentic and full of valuable gems.

Molly Ringwald is a writer?!?!? Am I the last person on the planet to discover this? While looking for something else on Amazon (isn’t that when you find the best stuff anyway?), I stumbled across her book, Getting the Pretty Back.Being a child of the 1980s, I HAD to read this book. Yes, I watched Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, and – of course – Sixteen Candles over and over again. I attempted to emulate the styles of the characters she played. Although, I will admit, by the time Breakfast Club was released, I was more like Ally Sheedy’s character than Ringwald’s. Still, she was never too far off my radar when I was a teenager.Since then I would occasionally wonder what she was up to, usually in a “where are they now?” kind of way. Turns out, she’s traveled quite an interesting path since showing off one of the more creative ways to apply lipstick.Ringwald turned forty just two years before I did (I always thought she was much older than me). It was her introduction about embracing the “f-word” – forty – that drew me in to purchasing the book. The introduction was like finding a kindred spirit as, similar to Molly, I am currently learning to appreciate being forty while looking much more youthful than my age.The book discusses many universal themes that I think every woman entertains at least once in our lives – boyfriends (or girlfriends), beauty, friends, family, motherhood, and evolving into the person you want to, or hope to, become. Ringwald approaches these things from both her unique perspective and as a set of common experiences. Sure, most of us will never be able to relate to becoming a household name while still in our teens, but you will still nod your head in agreement when she describes “The Five Biggest Mistakes Home Cooks Make” or when she admits that she does not “get excited about working out” and often has to drag herself to the gym.Getting the Pretty Back is part memoir and part handbook, with a killer bouillabaisse recipe thrown in for good measure. It was like catching up with an old friend you haven’t seen in 20 years over a glass or three of wine. This review originally appeared at Zen Dixie, http://www.zendixie.com/read.html

It was fun becoming reacquainted with Molly Ringwald again after a few decades. All I had to see was her red hair on the cover and the book got tucked under my arm. It didn't hurt that I was turning 40, and it's about securing vibrancy for yourself as women head toward middle-age. So, there's food, fashion tips, and personal dish about her life as a person--not as an actress (so no Breakfast Club dish...well, not really). Some of it made me smile: her obsession with Jean Seberg, all things French and boys. Some of it made my eyes roll as she does tend to skew towards women of considerable means. When she does try to remember some of us live on a budget, there can be a "suck it up, and just do it" tone. Sometimes she does include bargain tips. It's a brunch buffet. Pick out what you like, and just step past what doesn't tempt you. She's adamant about wearing plain t-shirts after a certain age--no slogans, place names, etc. And, I do see her point. I try to be selective about what goes on my corporeal billboard, but sometimes a lady wants to front "TOO BLACK TOO PROUD." She doesn't invent the wheel with the fashion/beauty/entertaining advice, but she does present it with a fresh, authentic voice. I appreciated hearing that divorce in France means getting vicious about the wine cellar not alimony. Ringwald's point-of-view comes off as real (not PR/People fluff), and her chatty style works well with the format. This is the woman I'd want to sit next to with a great glass of wine and discuss fashion trends and new food stores. If she decides to return one day and divulge some behind-the-scenes drama, I will be one of the first in line.

Just like in her movies, Molly Ringwald is incredibly relatable in this book. She is not condenscending and tells it like it is. This book was honest, contemporary and sincere. Molly is sensitive to non-celebrities and does not offer opinions that are unrealistic. I thouroughly enjoyed this book. It was fun and light-hearted and I looked forward to picking it up again to finish reading it. The only thing that I did not like was that it seemed to ended suddenly and a few pages appeared to be missing in the middle (in the E-book edition). Otherwise, it was great.

I personally enjoyed this book. I picked it up at Dollar Tree (sorry Molly!) so if the content was less than stellar, I didn't lose too much money; but I was pleasantly surprised. It is true that Molly suggests buying key pieces for your wardrobe through Burberry, Herme's and other high dollar items like cheeses that you may be hard pressed to find if you aren't in France or other exotic locations, but that is not the point she is making. What she is saying is that it is important to look your best and therefore, purchase the best you can afford - she just happens to have the money required for high end clothing and food-stuffs. The writing itself is easy to read and funny. She is not snobby nor does she expect her readers to become so, quite the contrary. She suggests that we live and let live but at the same time, we love, respect, and handle ourselves with dignity and grace while learning to broaden our horizons. I plan to pass this book on to my daughter (who is nowhere near 40!) because there are great nuggets of wisdom within its pages.

I found this book through the illustrator, Ruben Toledo. I just love his watercolors. Turns out, it's quite a fun book. It feels a lot like Nina Garcia and Kate Spade's recent books. Not quite. More of a memoir than that and full of highly personal opinion type-advice. Still, a fun read. Molly Ringwald isn't the best writer I've read, but she's very readable with a chatty style and she's lived quite an interesting life. I'm glad I read it, though I wouldn't buy it. Well, I might, if only for the back cover picture. That's GORGEOUS!9/20/2012I just reread this book and liked it even more. Upon second reading, I find I wish Molly were a friend of mine. I love the way she's comfortable in her own skin and with her age; with her choices and in love with her life. I especially love the way she wants us to be, too.
