Summary: Gilbert the opossum is ready for his big adventure to the beach with his family. Theres one thing, Gilbert is missing something. One of the most important things you need when you want to go swimming is a swim suit and Gilbert forgot his. Gilbert finds the perfect swim suit it says "Surfer Dude" on them, but they were too big. Gilbert insisted on having those pair. Gilbert finds out quickly that there is more to being a real surfer dude then he ever imagined. Evaluation: Gilbert, the Surfer Dude is a fun book for students to read as a transitional book. It has chapters but not too much that it is overwhelming for a reader. This book talks about the beach and fun things that Gilbert and his family do. Students can make connections with Gilbert and some of the things that happened to him. Teaching Idea: This book is a great transitional book for young readers. Using this book as a way of introducing chapters in a book is a great idea and use for this book. It can also be used to show how sometimes we might think we know everything and we have it all figured out, but really we might need some help in the end and that is certainly okay.

This level 2 reader was an amusing read. Gilbert wants to go surfing with his family at the beach but has forgotten his swim trunks. He and his mom buy a pair which he thinks are great (the read "Surfer Dude") but which his mom thinks might be too large. Add to this a little sister who imagines all sorts of creatures are just waiting for them out in the water and you can guess some of what happens. All in all a cute book which is sure to delight the child in your family.

The first Gilbert book that is an I can read!. Nice story broken into three chapters where Gilbert and his family head to the beach for the day. Lola is afraid there are sharks in the water. Gilbert forgets his swim suit, leading to a humorous ending.

A very cute story with a bit of humor for the kids in regards to a too big bathing suit.
