Girl in the Rearview Mirror Audiobook Summary

The young nanny for a prominent political family gets drawn into a web of deadly lies–including her own–in this stunning debut thriller with the menacing twists of Megan Abbott and the exquisite suspense of Laura Lippman.

They are Phoenix’s First Family: handsome Philip Martin, son of the sitting Senator, an ex-football player who carries himself with an easy grace and appears destined to step into his father’s seat when the time is right; his wife Marina, the stylish and elegant director of Phoenix’s fine arts museum; and their four-year-old daughter Amabel, beautiful and precocious and beloved.

Finn Hunt is working a dull office job to pay off her college debt when she meets Philip and charms Amabel. She eagerly agrees to nanny, thinking she’s lucked into the job of a lifetime. Though the glamour of the Martins’ lifestyle undeniably dazzles Finn, her real pleasure comes from being part of the family: sharing quick jokes with Philip in the kitchen before he leaves for work; staying late when Marina needs a last-minute sitter; and spending long days with Amabel, who is often treated more like a photo op than a child.

But behind every facade lurks a less attractive truth. When a young woman approaches Finn, claiming a connection with Philip and asking Finn to pass on a message, Finn becomes caught up in a web of deceit with the senate seat at its center. And Finn isn’t exactly innocent herself: she too has a background she has kept hidden, and under the hot Phoenix sun, everything is about to be laid bare. . . .

The title intrigued me from the start. Does it mean not looking back? Does it mean looking the other way? Does it mean keeping your secrets and your past hidden? We meet Finn whose real name is Natalie, but she doesn't tell anyone because she wants to hide her past.Finn left her home and moved to Arizona, worked in the office of a Senator's son, and then became the nanny for his four-year-old daughter.Everyone seemed to have secrets, told lies, were manipulative, and users. Some of the characters were also odd but most were selfish.GIRL IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR dragged a bit at first, and the story line was difficult to get straight, but the writing and the underlying hints about what was really going on kept me reading as the author has us mingling with the upper crust. The chapters will keep your interest because of the author's skill of inserting subtle facts throughout the chapters and as the chapters end.The story line increased in intensity and twists and kept me rapidly turning the pages to find out what really was going on, what really was happening, who could be trusted, and who was lying. If you enjoy personal and family drama, seeing how the upper crust lives, and what lengths people go to in order to keep something hidden, GIRL IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR, will be something to add to your reading list. 4/5This book was given to me as an ARC by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Stylish and cool, this is a thriller that examines an ordinary life subsumed and intoxicated by a world of wealth, privilege and power. Superbly executed and tense to the very last page.

3.5 stars. This is definitely worth picking up if you are a thriller fan. The plot has some intriguing aspects that many will appreciate: 1) The main character is a bit unreliable and that adds to the suspense level. 2) Set in Arizona with lots of potential for desert drama. 3) An election is in the mix adding political intrigue. 4) Main character is a nanny giving an upstairs/downstairs vibe. So with all of these factors in play, I did find this an enjoyable and suspense-filled read. On the down side, the manner in which the main mystery is resolved seemed a bit flat and lacking in drama. The final scene, though, helped make up for it. I do believe this author has potential and would be interested in picking up her next title.Thank you to William Morrow and Edelweiss for making a digital ARC available in exchange for an honest review.

I had the pleasure of reading an advance copy of this book. It's my kind of book, the story of a 'good girl,' a nanny for the young granddaughter of a powerful political figure. She's running away from secrets in her past, trying to start over, but she's running smack into danger. It's about class differences. The perils of trying to reinvent yourself. The power of money and politics. A page turner that leaves the reader with lots to think about.

Editorial note: I received a copy of Girl in the Rearview Mirror in exchange for a review. Girl in the Rearview Mirror by Kelsey Rae Dimberg is an original modern noir packed with suspense and intrigue. Full review can be found on Book Club Chat: https://bookclubchat.com/books/review...Meet Phoenix’s first family: Phillip Martin, son of the sitting Senator, an ex-football player destined to step into his father’s seat when the time is right; his wife Marina, the stylish and elegant director of Phoenix’s fine arts museum; and their four-year-old daughter Amabel, beautiful and precocious and beloved.Finn Hunt is working a dull office job to pay off her college debt when she meets Philip and charms Amabel. And Finn isn’t exactly innocent herself: she too has a background she has kept hidden.Even if you think you have some political fatigue thanks to the daily news cycle—I think that you all will be very much drawn to Girl in the Rearview Mirror. While this is a story about a political family, you won’t find much debate about actual policies. This is a really interesting look at a political family where everything all seems to work out because they force it—there’s no second option with these types. To me, those are the best kind of political stories in fiction—the ones that take a closer look at the people behind the politician. But for Finn, she becomes so enamored with this family that she puts her blinders on—even when pushed by outside forces. It shows how intoxicating power and money can be, no matter how much one wants to deny that. Finn is quite an intriguing character. You know right off the bat that she has a dark secret but it’s slowly revealed as the book goes on. She also plays amateur detective to a mystery that she’s not really sure is real or not.So you might think you know where this book will go but I have to say about halfway, something happens that takes this story in a completely different direction. And the surprises keep coming in until the very last page.

I read this over the weekend and I enjoyed it. It is an story that starts out well and unfolds at a good pace but I do have to say at the out set that I had some serious questions about the actions of the lead character. Finn, a young woman from a relatively small town background goes off to college and while she is there decided to reinvent herself. She is not that close to her parents, her old friends have all gone their separate ways so she starts using her middle name Finn instead of her first name Natalie. Not for nefarious reasons, she just likes it better. Her college friends call Finn. When she was younger her closest friend was the daughter of a wealthier family who included Natalie in a lot of their activities. She stayed at their house more than her own and the family introduced her to people over time who later helped her get a job at a resort. This is where she ran into The Martin's, a political power couple who hired her to be a nanny for their daughter Amabel. Finn is devoted to the little girl who is four and prone to telling fibs. Ammy has noticed a girl with red hair who shows up at placed that they happen to be and she mentions it to Finn who fails to mention this to Ammy's parents. Later the girl and Finn meet face to face and she announces something to Finn about her employer. Finn refuses to believe this because the Martin's are her friends Finn's boyfriend, who work's for the Martin's political campaign, is Finn believes, a person of integrity who looks down on people who are not honest about who they are. Again Finn fails to mention any of these meetings to anyone. She tries to start piecing thing together on her own with disasterus results. I enjoyed this story. it was a good read and moved along well, I would recommend it for a weekend read for sure because you won't want to stop until you figure it out. Two thumbs up.

Completely engaged in this story from almost the beginning to the finish. It is incredible to me that the author Kelsey Dimberg wrote this thriller as her first book. She has created a disturbing story and a clear uncovering of events and character development as smooth as it could be. Its not a pretty story and every character is flawed. Not flawed as a writer's error this is what she created in developing her characters. for me as a reader there was no character with whom I identified or fully understood. everyone and everything in this story is complex and multi dimensional. Her main character is Natalie or Finn - she has taken the name of Finn. everything that happens is through her the Nanny for the Martin family and their child Ammabel (not sure of the full name of this 5 yr old girl). She herself is young and as the story develops and she sets out to investigate the mess in the Martin family that has caused the early death of the child she is hired to watch. She herself Finn grows and develops thru what happens and what she risks to learn the Truths. She is a courageous woman who in the process becomes a lady of high Integrity undoing events of the Past.Judy

Finn Finn Finn.... What a stupid character, why does she do the things she does!? I found myself yelling at the book while reading. The character development is a little weak (what you see is what you get) still definitely a fun read.

It’s hard (for me) to find a book where the writing itself is so good and the plot is exciting. The author’s descriptions are so apt, they bring you right into the world of her story.I made the mistake of reading other people’s reviews before leaving mine (I never read a book or see a movie based on other people’s general criticism). I’ll just say, I found the characters interesting and the plot has some pretty unexpected twists. I read it cover to cover (on a Wisconsin lake this summer) and passed it on to some of my friends that I knew would enjoy it. Just recently left a James Patterson novel that I bought at an airport out for donation—hated it. Such bad writing. So there’s some perspective on my review. This one is really good writing.
