Gun Games Audiobook Summary

“[Kellerman] does for the American cop what P. D. James has done for the British mystery, lifting it beyond its genre.”
Richmond Times-Dispatch

“No one working in the crime genre is better.”
Baltimore Sun

In Gun Games, the sensational Faye Kellerman once again showcases Peter Decker of the LAPD and Rina Lazarus, arguably the most popular husband and wife team in contemporary crime fiction. A rash of shocking adolescent suicides at an elite Los Angeles private school is at the heart of this gripping thriller that also focuses on the troubled teen Decker and Lazarus have brought into their home: Gabriel Whitman, the son of a psychopath. Herself one-half of one of noir fiction’s true “power couples”–along with her husband, acclaimed mystery writer Jonathan Kellerman–Faye Kellerman once again demonstrates how American police procedural writing is done to perfection with Gun Games.

I enjoyed the nook as I always enjoy Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus books. However, the depth of the mystery was a little thin. Much of the book concentrated on Gabe and his relationship with Yasmine. While I really like to follow the characters, their development, and what they are up to, this seemed like too much.

I've been a fan of this series for many, many years. As sometimes happens with long-running series, I've lost track of it a bit. When I started reading this book, I was surprised at all that has happened since I last visited Peter Decker, Rina Lazarus and family. I checked and saw that I've missed two books, which I need to go back and fill in.I'm impressed at how Faye Kellerman keeps shifting the focus of the series to keep it fresh, while still remaining true to the characters. There's only so much character growth any one or two characters can reasonably have! Over the course of 20 books, the focus has gone from religious, professional, personal, and family. She's looked at other family members (most memorably, Decker's daughter, who is also a police officer). Here, the focus is on a foster child, one that came to live with the family in one of the books that I missed.I really liked Gabriel, who was simultaneously very, very young (when it comes to his love life) and much, much older (when it comes to his music, and to knowledge of the seamy side of the world.) He's Romeo to a very naive Juliet. He manages to stumble into a situation that Decker is investigating, and it's a good think he has the skills to navigate some very risky waters. The mystery itself is good, but not outstanding. What I enjoyed was the quick visit with all the characters I know so well, and getting to know a few more even better. There is no need to have read the full list of previous books in the series to enjoy this one. I haven't read Hangman, the previous book, but suspect the context from that one might be nice, and there are clearly spoilers here for the events there. I'll go back and read it anyway.

Love everything written by Faye Kellerman! This book was a bit slower and similar to another of her books but very good and worth the read!

Gun Games is my first Faye Kellerman novel. I have meant to read her for years. I have read her husband and have even read her son, but for some reason haven't read her. I use to have this thing where I had to start the series from the beginning, but I have finally gotten over that. Yes you do miss character growth and some background, but I've found a lot of these suspense series, each book stands on it's own and that's how I feel about Gun Games. It's the 20th novel in the Rina and Peter Decker series and as I stated before the first I have read.Gun Games seems to center around two separate stories, Gabe, the foster son that Pete and Rina are keeping who is a piano prodigy is the center of one of the stories. He meets a girl who is a year younger and is a Persian Jew. Gabe is white and not a Jew at all. A romance ensues secretly. Gabe keeps up his piano studies and is trying to decide what to do with his life. All-in-all I really enjoyed this story line. I liked Gabe and Yasmine. They were cute and sweet and everything young love is when you are 15 and 14.The second story centers around a suicide that Pete and his detectives have been asked to look into at an exclusive private school. The mom just doesn't think her son could have committed suicide. Crazy things start showing up. I really enjoyed this storyline. The detective work and the way things unfolded really made the story. And I always enjoy reading about exclusive prep or boarding schools. And then the storylines intersect like you would not believe and I won't give anything more away. But thing go completely crazy. If you think you couldn't put the book down before this point, there is no way you are putting it down after this point.I think Ms. Kellerman does an excellent job creating believable characters and scary characters. She interweaves a plot that is so crazy that it is believable. I was enthralled. It's one of those books that is so calm and easy going in the beginning that it sucks you in and before you know it you just cannot put it down.Overall I think this was an amazing book and if the others in this series are anything like it I am definitely starting at the beginning and working my way through. In fact I'm going to my library website now to reserve The Ritual Bath. I can't wait to get more of Peter and Rina Decker.

I couldn't wait to read this book. Ever since Chris Donatti walked back into this series, he's had such a magnetic hold on Peter and Rina and his son, musical prodigy Gabe, has been no different. Gabe becomes a major player in this book for two reasons. While he is not a gangster like his father, his father taught him how to keep his head and when he's confronted by gangbanger wannabes with guns in Starbucks, Gabe not only keeps his head but earns their respect. He immediately switches coffee shops and forgets about it, but high school students seem to hang out everywhere. In his next coffee shop he meets Yasmine, a 14 year old Persian Jewish sister of a friend of Hannah's, Peter's daughter. She invites him to the opera and they fall in love. It's not puppy love. It's the real thing, at least as real as 14 and 15 year olds who aren't brought up traditionally can have. And that brings Yasmine to the attention of the gangbangers. Meanwhile, Peter is investigating the suicide of a teenage boy at a top tier high school. There were no signs and where did he get a stolen gun? When world collide Chris Donatti doesn't hesitate to do what he has to do. And I, for one, was happy to watch it happen.

I have read almost all of the Decker/Lazarus mysteries and I have loved them. This book was no exception. Given that I know the background of the Decker family, the addition of Chris was not new for me. The mystery of the apparent suicide of a teenage boy, his mother's skepticism, and the connection to the private school (and its teachers and students) he attended is detailed with good twists and a great outcome--as others have said, the last part of the book is fantastic. What did surprise me is the theme of teenage sex--complete with ALL the details--that Kellerman writes about extensively. I was surprised that Kellerman, an Orthodox Jewish woman, would spend so much time here. It doesn't exactly add to the mystery and, to some degree, it detracts from it because of the surprising (although accurate!) descriptions.True to Kellerman, there are the additional treats of Orthodox Jewish life. Rita's meals ALWAYS make me salivate.

Authors can either rejoice or tear their hair when one of the marginal characters in their series takes on a life of his own. So it was with Chris Donnetti, and later son Gabe, in the Decker/Lazarus novels. Who can't relate to a charismatic, brilliantly gifted psychopathic hit man who relates to his son via their shared talent for classical music? Hannibal would adore these two. As do I, so it was good to see them back in action in "Gun Games" -- a novel that takes the problems of star-crossed teen lovers and bullying in exclusive private schools to whole new levels. I was sorry that Rina did not have a stronger role here and there were a number of times when I felt the book needed way better editing. But, this is Decker and Gabe's story and I could not put it down. As soon as I finished, I ordered the sequel which starts a couple of months after this book ends. Well worth reading!

I've enjoyed the whole series with Lieutenant Peter Decker - he's a real person going through a vivid and believable life. He faces police cases that don't always work out neatly, family members who have their own personalities and problems, colleagues who are interesting. I was happy to see his foster son Gabe featured in this one; I fell in love with the young piano prodigy in the last book and hoped we would see more of how his life worked out. What a great teenager. This series should be read in order, but it is not one where the books become clones of each other. The mysteries are interesting and the characters evolve. I still get the next one the moment it hits my library's best-seller rental shelves, and as soon as I'm done I look forward to the one after.

I love the Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series. I have been reading them since the beginning. For the last while i was abit "lost" and not as into the books but this book brought me right back to Faye Kellerman and this series. She is a wonderful mystery story teller.Highly recommend but to get to know the characters - i really suggest going right to the beginning and learning about how Peter and Rina came together - a love story wrapped into excellent mystery/thrillers.Well worth the reading!

LAPD lieutenant detective Decker and his wife, Rina, have willingly welcomed fifteen-year-old Gabriel Whitman, the son of a troubled former friend, into their home. While the teen seems to be adapting easily, Decker knows only too well the secrets adolescents keep--witnessed by the tragic suicide of another teen, Gregory Hesse, a student at Bell and Wakefield, one of the city's most exclusive prep schools. Gregory's mother, Wendy, refuses to believe her son shot himself and convinces Decker to look deeper. What he finds disturbs him. The gun used in the tragedy was stolen--evidence that propels him to launch a full investigation with his trusted team, Sergeant Marge Dunn and Detective Scott Oliver. But the case becomes darkly complicated by the suicide of another Bell and Wakefield student--a death that leads them to uncover an especially nasty group of rich and privileged students with a predilection for guns and violence. Decker thought he understood kids, yet the closer he and his team get to the truth, the clearer it becomes that he knows very little about them, including his own charge, Gabe. The son of a gangster and an absent parent, the boy has had a life filled with too much free time, too many unexplained absences, and too little adult supervision. This is the third book I have read about Gabe and his father Chris. It started in Justice, and this book along with the one before it and after it tells more about Gabe's life with the Deckers. I really like Kellerman's writing and character development and now plan on going back and reading all the ones in between that I skipped.
