HEAT Audiobook Summary

Ex-DEA agent Jesse Warden has seen enough of the inside of a solitary confinement cell to last him a lifetime.Or two lifetimes, which is the sentence he’s serving after being convicted of a plan he was planning to commit, but never did. So when an old buddy shows up with a deal that could spring him from his hell behind bars, he’s ready to listen.

To gain his freedom, Jesse must infiltrate a dangerous and reclusive religious cult that has been stockpiling weapons and eliminating those sent to investigate. From the moment he arrives in the Idaho mountain town where the cult is centered, Jesse finds every aspect of life dictated by the group’s eerie, imposing leader. Pitted against not only the cult, but also the feds who sent him, Jesse feels control of his own life slipping away, and must make a final, desperate attempt to regain it — or die trying.

A page-turner from start to finish. This novel is the type you truly cannot put down once you've opened it.Jesse Warden is a wrongly-convicted lawman who gets another chance at freedom by working undercover in the Idaho panhandle. In a seemingly small town he meets a larger-than-life self-appointed messiah in the name of Jack Gene Coldwater. But Coldwater has other ideas less than heavenly. In truth he is leader of a white supremacy cult hell-bent on waging war against the federal government, and Jesse must expose how Coldwater plans to wage this war.Along the way he meets a beautiful, single mother with a dark secret who he falls in love with and must decide on putting her life in danger by continuing to dig into the lives of Coldwater and his gang, or leave the country for good. There are many twists in this story (all plausible), and the writing from Woods is top-notch (as usual). He did his research well, and this is shown in the descriptions of the undercover work Jesse goes through, with a climatic ending. You won't want to pass up this book.

If you've ready one Stuart Woods book, you've pretty much read them all, although this is one of the few that doesn't feature one of Woods' usual main characters. Instead, it's about Jesse Warden, an ex-DEA agent who spent years in prison for a murder he didn't do, and is offered the chance at a pardon if he can take down a religious cult who control a small town in Idaho. It is a typical Woods book, in that Warden meets a young attractive women, sleeps with her a few pages later, and is in a committed relationship with her a few chapters after that. But the mystery and the action are top-notch and the book is very enjoyable.

This 1994 stand-alone thriller by author Stuart Woods is the 6th of 8 stand-alones before he devoted the next 70 novels to the Stone Barrington universe. It is not great literature, but does show plotting of increasing complexity and is highly entertaining. Betrayal, revenge, loyalty, friendship, love, deviousness, and ingenuity are all evidenced by out protagonist in one or more of his personas. I greatly enjoyed it and only regret that as a fan of the Barrington novels there will not be numerous sequels.Ex-DEA agent Jesse Warden, wrongly convicted of a murder he suspects was the work of Dan Barker, his former superior, is offered a chance at a presidential pardon if he will infiltrate the sinister religious cult that has taken control of St. Clair, Idaho. Despite knowing that he will again be under the control of Barker and that two previous agents investigating the cult have vanished, Jesse can't refuse. Going incognito, he gets a job at the town's only business not controlled by the cult and is brazenly seduced by his new landlady, lovely widow Jenny Weatherby. As Jesse sets out to win the confidence of the menacing head of the sect, Jack Gene Coldwater, he comes under close surveillance by Coldwater's two henchmen. In spite of some nearly fatal mistakes, however, he manages to gain the trust of the charismatic and seemingly psychic cult leader. Meanwhile, Jesse marries Jenny, who's pregnant. Faced with the catch-22 of how to deliver Coldwater and his ruthless subordinates to the treacherous Barker, whom he is sure will not come through with the promised pardon, Jesse must find a way to bring himself and his new family to freedom.

Even though there were a few implausible situations (which caused me to dock it a star) this was a great read. The characters were well-drawn (with the exception of Jenny) and the plot and pace were awesome. Once you get to about page 100 you might as well plan on reading it all the way to the end.Ex-DEA agent Jesse Warden has seen enough of the inside of a solitary confinement cell to last him a lifetime. An action-packed, fast-paced novel full of intrigue, mystery, thrills and romance! This is the first book I read by this author and he's been around for some time. This page-turner made it hard to stop reading long enough to do other things. It takes place in the pan-handle of Idaho where a glorified white supremacist, church leader pretty much owns the town they live in.Jesse is an ex-cop out on bail for a crime he didn't commit. If he succeeds infiltrating the religious cult and helps the FBI and Justice Dept bring down the leader, Jack Gene Coldwater, he'll earn his freedom. But this operation is riddled with traps. Firstly, the cult are expecting the FBI to send someone to their town for just that kind of mission. Secondly, the town police chief is a personal friend of Coldwater, and he has eyes everywhere.Jesse has to somehow work his way into their tight-knit sphere with informers and the danger of being caught at every turn. This is a book leaving you wishing for more. Too bad there's no sequel.

Jesse finds himself brought out of solitary confinement just as usual, to fight yet another burly inmate. This time however, he is being released to an assistant Attorney General. Once an agent himself, he had been incarcerated for killing his former partner and stealing money. His task is to go undercover in a small mountain town to see what is going on. There seems to be something going on with the local large Church. As Jesse infiltrates the clan of one Gene Cold water and his cronies, he finds danger and deception on a much larger scale. Can he get the goods on this organization to gain his freedom or will they find him out and kill yet another agent. Will he ever see his young daughter again?

The dates read might indicate that I am the world's slowest listener. Actually, my husband and I started this audiobook on a trip in May. We were close to finishing when the trip was over. My husband never likes to just finish an audiobook separately and our own car doesn't have a means to listen. We took another road trip recently and finished.Anyway, we both really enjoyed the story. There are parts that call for a little suspension of disbelief, but there usually are in this sort of thing.

I’ve been a Stone Barrington fan since discovering the series a few years ago...with the exception of a few books😉So listening to this short audiobook was a pleasant surprise and now I better understand the loyal Stuart Woods fans as they mention how much better his earlier books were written. As for this story - I thoroughly enjoyed it! I listened to the audiobook and as always Tony Roberts narration is spot on.

This was a decent book about a former DEA agent supposedly incarcerated under false pretenses. He is taken out of prison to infiltrate a religious cult that is a front for weapons sales. I don’t like the “romantic” part of it. The woman he meets is too two-dimensional and Woods could have done more with the cult side of it all. It seems like a lot was made of the kids being brainwashed and nothing was done with it.

Yeah Stuart Woods!!!!! Yet another wonderful book!!!!I do enjoy Stuart Woods' books. They are so readable and engaging. They grab my attention from the beginning and hold it through to the end -- often to the detriment of whatever I was doing before I started reading. Thank you so very much.

First of all I was misled on line. Next to the name of the book you'll find (Will Lee Book). I enjoy this series so without hesitation I ordered it. Although curious as to why it was mentioned as a "Will Lee Book," because it isn't, I continued to read. It's a good story. I did like it and was surprised how it ended.

Absolutely loved this book. I have read several Stuart Woods's books and thought they were starting to all blend together, same characters, same, well almost everything. I took a break from reading him and then stumbled across this book. Stayed up late at night just to try and get through it. Really enjoyed it!

Really great book by a favorite authorI’m a Stuart Woods fan and love his Stone Barrington series. I don’t know how I missed this book when it was originally published but I’m SO GLAD I found it now. Great “can’t-put-it-down” book. Different and somehow better than Woods’ other books. Recommended!
