How to Win at Feminism Audiobook Narrator

Anna Drezen is the narrator of How to Win at Feminism audiobook that was written by Reductress

Reductress is a fast-growing, satirical website that takes on the voice of a stereotypical women’s magazine to deliver smart, wickedly funny content that subversively points out how the media has co-opted feminism in a strange and absurd way. Referred to as the “feminist Onion,” it pokes fun at the messages we’re fed from an early age and throughout adulthood. Headlines include “How to Make a Cry for Help Without Bothering Anyone” and “Maybe You SHOULD Smile: Cat-Callers Who Make Some Good Points”. Since its creation in 2013, it has exploded in popularity, with its on-point criticism wrapped in hilarious headlines and features, appealing to intelligent young fans of Lena Dunham’s Girls, and of course, Beyonce. Reductress was founded by Beth Newell and Sarah Pappalardo, the authors of this book.

"Privilege. We aren't sure what this means, but our friend Jen keeps telling us to 'check it.' Sorry Jen - we use venmo!"I was recently in a waiting room and decided to skim through Cosmo. Among other things I distinctly remember a nearly neurotic article about how to throw an excellent brunch together for your friends which included what to say if specific things started to go wrong (e.g. you burnt something in the kitchen)With that fresh in my mind I absolutely adored this audiobook. It basically reads like a podcast satire of faux feminism of all varieties. The first disc is laugh out loud funny in multiple spots - including the descriptions of the "9 circles of female hell." Sadly I would be in circle 4 or 5 for bringing store made chips & dip to potlocks :-( "Are you ready to be the woman who has depressing statistics memorized like how many plastic bottles there are in the ocean? If not, then maybe you aren't ready for equal pay either!" The jokes do start to wear thin in some portions but I cannot say enough good things about the audio. Three writers for Reductress read it and really nail the characters they are going for. It's also nice as an actual feminist (!) to be able to comfortably laugh at ourselves

I didn't realize this was going to be satire when I picked it up, so I was confused for the first ten minutes before I went online to learn what exactly "Reductress" is - a satirical women's magazine! They poke fun at marketing geared towards women, stereotypes, and societal expectations. It's insightful. It's creative. It's hilarious.Would recommend for both women and men.

I keep opening up to new, random pages and sections and start hysterically laughing

This book, like the site, is perfect satire. The authors understand corporatized feminism inside out and they find a lot of new angles to examine it from. I laughed out loud several times. Honestly, it also kind of works as an exposé of the shallow “feel-good feminism” that’s so popular right now. It’s like The Daily Show in that way; if the people need sugar with their medicine, so be it. Still, this book probably needs to be paired with a serious critique (I recommend We Were Feminist Once by Andi Zeisler) to actually go beyond making people laugh and help readers think more deeply about what’s really empowering. This would be 5 stars if I were the kind of person who’s insatiable when it comes to comedy. But, I get bored with too much of it at once, so I didn’t tear through this I quickly as I could have. Also, there were sections that felt like filler recycled from the site. Like, why would a book have ads in it? While most sections were directly about feminism, others were more tangential and seemed to be included to up the word count. What I learned: Judging by a lot of the negative reviews on here, it looks like many readers are completely unfamiliar with critiques like Zeisler’s and, though they claim to understand this book's satire, they clearly don’t. It’s baffling to me that anyone would pick up a book with this title and read it earnestly, but some people feel genuinely inspired by Dove Real Beauty ads even though they literally sell deodorant that bleaches your armpits, so there you have it.

"In 2014 Beyonce invented the term Feminism."This is a painfully hilarious satiric commentary on the toxic white feminism that is all the rage in popular woman's media. It's absurdist, irreverent, and pointedly nonsensical. I listened to the audio book almost completely without pause, and was laughing out loud the entire time. If you found this book too offensive, perhaps it's because it struck to close to home, Becky.

hits a lot more than it misses, but it takes a lot of swings. the evergreen stuff is really good but it already feels dated a few years on, especially the hillary stuff. i think the brevity of the online format means that jokes don't get worn out, and the tone of the book starts to fall a little flat towards the end.

I really enjoyed this book. It was an excellent, satirical tongue-in-cheek look at white, straight, cisgendered feminism. However, I DEFINITELY would not recommend this book for someone who is just learning about feminism. You definitely need a familiarity with feminism and mainstream views on women for the satire to make sense.
