Hunting El Chapo Audiobook Summary

A blend of Manhunt, Killing Pablo, and Zero Dark Thirty, Andrew Hogan and Douglas Century’s sensational investigative high-tech thriller–soon to be a major motion picture from Sony–chronicles a riveting chapter in the twentieth-century drug wars: the exclusive inside story of the American lawman and his dangerous eight-year hunt that captured El Chapo–the world’s most wanted drug kingpin who evaded the law for more than a decade.

Every generation has a larger-than-life criminal: Jesse James, Billy the Kid, John Dillinger, Al Capone, John Gotti, Pablo Escobar. But each of these notorious lawbreakers had a “white hat” in pursuit: Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett, Eliot Ness, Steve Murphy. For notorious drug lord Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman-Loera–El Chapo–that lawman is former Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Andrew Hogan.

In 2006, fresh out of the D.E.A. Academy, Hogan heads west to Arizona where he immediately plunges into a series of gripping undercover adventures, all unknowingly placing him on the trail of Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, a Forbes billionaire and Public Enemy No. 1 in the United States. Six years later, as head of the D.E.A.’s Sinaloa Cartel desk in Mexico City, Hogan finds his life and Chapo’s are ironically, on parallel paths: they’re both obsessed with the details.

In a recasting of the classic American Western on the global stage, Hunting El Chapo takes us on Hogan’s quest to achieve the seemingly impossible, from infiltrating El Chapo’s inner circle to leading a white-knuckle manhunt with an elite brigade of trusted Mexican Marines–racing door-to-door through the cartel’s stronghold and ultimately bringing the elusive and murderous king-pin to justice.

This cinematic crime story following the relentless investigative work of Hogan and his team unfolds at breakneck speed, taking the reader behind the scenes of one of the most sophisticated and dangerous counter-narcotics operations in the history of the United States and Mexico.

Recounting how a Kansas farm boy grew up and went to work for the DEA, eventually tracking down the world's most notorious drug lord. The narrative here is matter-of fact and dispassionate-Hogan apparently has no need of ego gratification as he tells of the years-long struggle to bring El Chapo to justice. He also details some of the interagency turf wars and political infighting that in some respects hampered the pursuit of El Chapo, as well as the rampant corruption in the Mexican police system and military that enabled and even aided Chapo in eluding and escaping punishment for years prior to his final arrest. I was curious to know what effect Hogan's consuming obsession had on his family life but that is a minor point. A fascinating insider look at one of the major criminal cases of the century.

This book reads like a thriller, with all the twists and turns you wouldn't expect! But it's a true-to-life tale of a DEA agent with insight on one of the biggest criminal takedowns in modern history. The author, Andrew Hogan, retold his story without any braggadocio. The whole story felt like you were right there with him for the intel/data gathering and the major events. I listened to it on Audible and my husband read it in hardback. Both of us were equally impressed with the intense writing and the page-turning appeal of the book. Take a minute to start it and you won't be disappointed!

This book is right up my alley but I fully understand why most other people would hate reading it. If you’re of a similar disposition to me you’ll find that this book is informative and exciting. Even knowing how the story ends I could not put the book down and felt engrossed in every step of the investigation. I felt the emotion in every success and every failure Andrew Hogan experienced as if I was there hunting alongside him. Great book I highly recommend reading this if you’re interested in the investigation side of true crime if not give it a skip. TLDR: I enjoyed it and my opinion is the most important to me!

Fascinating book. Got this as a gift for my birthday, couldn’t put it down. The true crime aspect, the heritage aspect, the mythos. One part of this book that got my nerd-knobs turning was learning about the custom comms network chapo had setup using blackberry’s network; bbm?! Boy does that take me back… ugh I miss phones with full keyboards :o) ; that part intrigued me because regardless of the criminal enterprise, the succes is often only as good as your OPSEC ( a la Silk Road dude getting busted because they distracted him and snatched his laptop so it wouldn’t be encrypted). Good read.

Great read.I have been following Chapo for a long time. This book was especially interesting since I have traveled to Mazatlan for 35 years and I happened to be in Mazatlan the day he was captured. A good friend who works at a local restaurant was there early that morning and described what was going on so early in the morning. I have been past the Miramar Hotel numerous times. I felt Andrew and his partner did a great job telling the story. I am familiar with many of the places in the book. Thank you for telling the story and am looking forward to the movie next!

If, like me, you consider the War on Drugs an endless waste of time, lives, and resources, but still find the characters who run these narco empires weirdly interesting, this is a good read in the tradition of Mark Bowden's Killing Pablo. What was perhaps most interesting for me is that Guzman (El Chapo) wasn't even interesting as a person. His desires and management style were of the lowest level, and he just managed to be "last rat standing." Until he wasn't anymore. He now lives with inmates like the Unabomber at a facility he won't be escaping from anytime soon.
