Ice Like Fire Audiobook Summary

Game of Thrones meets Graceling in this thrilling fantasy filled with shocking twists and heart-pounding action, the highly anticipated sequel to Snow Like Ashes. This action-packed series is perfect for fans of An Ember in the Ashes and A Court of Thorns and Roses.

It’s been three months since the Winterians were freed and Spring’s king, Angra, disappeared–thanks largely to the help of Cordell.

Meira just wants her people to be safe. When Cordellan debt forces the Winterians to dig their mines for payment, they unearth something powerful and possibly dangerous: Primoria’s lost chasm of magic. Theron sees this find as an opportunity–with this much magic, the world can finally stand against threats like Angra. But Meira fears the danger the chasm poses–the last time the world had access to so much magic, it spawned the Decay. So when the king of Cordell orders the two on a mission across the kingdoms of Primoria to discover the chasm’s secrets, Meira plans on using the trip to garner support to keep the chasm shut and Winter safe–even if it means clashing with Theron. But can she do so without endangering the people she loves?

Mather just wants to be free. The horrors inflicted on the Winterians hang fresh and raw in Jannuari–leaving Winter vulnerable to Cordell’s growing oppression. When Meira leaves to search for allies, he decides to take Winter’s security into his own hands. Can he rebuild his broken Kingdom and protect them from new threats?

As the web of power and deception is woven tighter, Theron fights for magic, Mather fights for freedom–and Meira starts to wonder if she should be fighting not just for Winter but for the world.

Meira owes a debt to Cordellan that has to be paid. They dig in the the mines and find Primoria’s lost chasm of magic. Meira and Theron take off on a scavenger hunt to find a way to open it all under the disguise of visiting kingdoms creating peace and introducing Winter back to the world. The scavenger hunt goes pretty easy for Meira. Meira and Theron clash as they have different viewpoints on their missions. I love Meira and Theron and sometimes their fights were annoying and Meira seemed to over think things but I understood that she is always putting her people first. Mather has to stay behind but continues training a little group of rebels. Mather struggles with his new role and accepting Sir as his father. Mather has his own POV although it was very sporadic throughout the book. Whether you are team Mather or Theron expect heart break. One of the most difficult love triangles I have ever read. I really really love both guys! I had a pretty good idea what way it was going but it did slip back and forth as to who you think it could possibly work with. Meira changes a lot throughout the story. She does contemplate both and how it would work. She wants to choose Winter and she wants to be the best Queen she can be and not put boy first but which boy would be better for Winter? All the traveling with Meira and Theron dragged on a little bit during the middle but still lots of good developments. It was interesting to see them visit all the different kingdoms and see how different their people are and the people in power. Then a crazy ending!!! Broken hearts! War! Death! Betrayal! Twists! Meira is so screwed! Oh man. Now the loooooong wait to see how it all ends!!!!

This book was excellent, some complained that it had “middle book syndrome” but I have to submit that it does NOT! I very happy with everything that went down but I’m going to warn you this next book is more politics with less action. Oh there is action but a lot more political.I think because I was able to immediately pick up this book without having to wait for it I was able to appreciate it more for what it was.I appreciate the fact that this book picks up where book one left off. Except the author added another point of view-Mather. Because the author did that, it kind of spoiled it for me in certain aspects, which I was actually okay with. Not gonna tell you which aspect because then that would spoil it for you! But seriously, if you’ve read this did that clue you in? let me know….Moving on…Meria is now ruler and Cordell has helped liberate her people so now they are in an alliance with them and she isn’t comfortable with it, at all. Because Cordellan helped Meria free her people she now owes them a huge debt, and King Noam wants it paid quickly and fast by opening up mines and dig until they find Primoria’s lost chasm of magic. Yikes. Meria still trying to figure out who she is and where she fits in this world that her new position ruler.Meira and Theron set off to find the tool necessary to open the chasm and while Theron has one reason and plan, Meira has another. So they leave to visit other kingdoms in hope find those tool and form alliances with them in the meantime as well as introduce Winter back as it’s own kingdom.I really appreciate the slow character development and even though Meira, Theron and Mather all have different roles now they are all still intertwined and I felt the author did a great job that. However I’m not gonna lie I was so surprised with how the author took these characters-don’t get me wrong I understand I liked it, it just surprised me! Mather does get a little depressed and mopey, Theron surprises you-big time, while Meira is steady in her development.I really enjoyed each new kingdom we were introduced to the descriptions, lifestyle, dress, customs were all vivid and I enjoyed that aspect a lot!The romance really had me pulled. I’m usually not a fan of love triangles because it’s usually obvious and it just annoys me. THIS one however didn’t bother me because I truly was torn between the two. I mean MAN I was torn! I loved it!Overall I enjoyed the book, not gonna lie there were times I felt the book dragged but it did with purpose and that’s okay. Can’t wait to read the last book!Sexual Content: moderateLanguage: mildViolence: moderate

"My chest is so cold. My heart is ice, my limbs snow, my every breath should be a cloud of condensation. The magic felt awakened before, but now it feels ~ unleashed" This is my current feeling/state after finishing this book. I can safely say that I'm thorn between hating and liking this sequel. I hate it when authors intentional sink my ship. It leaves me bitter and cheated. Thus a half star is being deducted ( what? I can do that ). I also found that the book could have been at least a hundred pages shorter as some of the information was unnecessary and in my opinion fluff( another half star gone ). I hate it when books start to drag and at times that is how I felt while reading this sequel. The storyline did pick up greatly at the end but I still felt like too much was cramped into it, so I was left feeling as though it was a bit rushed. I am still "disturbed" about my baby Theron ( Yes That's my Ship ) and still can't put together the words to express my feelings for how he was tossed aside. That being said, I think this gif embodies the kaleidoscope of emotions that's coursing through me: This book was good but the first was wayyyyy better. I will definitely read the next one, if only to find out how it all ends ( even though I think I can guess ) : ))

Ice Like Fire:"Most cathartic things are morbid... Healing through melancholy." -Theron (pg. 4)The characters-Meira- Okay... I loved her in the first book. Loved loved loved her. But I feel like she flip-flopped so much with her feelings and her thoughts in this one and it grew to be so frustrating. Don't get me wrong, I understand why, she had a lot on her plate and was figuring things out as she went half the time, but I also wanted to smack her more than once. Though I must say, she is quite the kick-ass heroine and I do love her. Theron- I love him. Like, I absolutely love him but ughhh I felt so betrayed when he told his father towards the beginning. Though I find his optimism to be adorable and I just feel like he is such a good person. He means so well and is honestly just trying to do as much good and as much justice as he possibly can whilst hurting as few people as possible. But gahhh. Sir- I can't call him William. That honor belongs to William Herondale. (Plus it's my brother's name :p) But that aside, he just irks me. I know all in all he did and lied about what he did because it was in the best interest of their country. But... Those are some big lies to not even tell the people whose lives you're screwing with for yeaaaars. Ugh. And sometimes the way he treats Meira irks me. Mather- Not going to lie, he definitely grew on me in this book and I think a big reason for that is getting the chapters that followed him. While necessary to the story in this book, they also added a more personal touch to Mather, despite it being in third-person for his chapters. He seriously got screwed over in so many ways and I feel for him. Noam- I will never have the proper words to describe this asshole. How any of the characters can even stand to be in the same room with him after the first book, I'll never know. Seriously, this man has a special place in hell reserved for him and ughhh. He's the Umbridge of the story. Simon- Wow. Who knew you could despise everything a character stood for so quickly?! Ceridwen- Adored her. She was honest with Meira right of the bat and was an absolutely amazing character through and through. So strong and just gahhh. And the rest of the characters I adored for one reason or another. The background and secondary characters in this series are amazing and it just makes the story that much more enjoyable. The story-I cannot wait for the next book and I freaking wish it would come out already. I just want to hole up and hibernate and have the next book delivered to me. I just... ugh. I mean, from page one I was hooked despite their being so much politics and stuff in this book, it wasn't boring. You find yourself rooting for Meira and her country. For everything to work out and everyone to be happy. For Meira to find her place as Queen. Honestly, the whole journey they took, getting to see more of the world made this book so amazing. I love all the development, both of characters and the storyline and I absolutely CANNOT wait for the next book. Also, can we talk about how absolutely chaotic and insane that ending was?! I'm sitting here in shock, barely able to formulate thoughts properly.

Oh god it hurt. What an amazing sequel!I've read some reviews in which people say our beloved characters completely changed. I don't agree with such statement because I think said change is justified in the book and makes sense. Meira can't think of herself as a rebellious warrior anymore, she has duties she can't simply ignore. Where we saw a fierce, brave girl in Snow Like Ashes, here we have a girl struggling between who she is and who she has to be for the sake of her country.(view spoiler)[At some point during the book I knew Theron was being poisoned with Angra’s thoughts, even if what he wanted somehow matched what Angra did, his behavior was extremely odd at times. My baby is struggling so hard not to hurt Meira that the last chapters broke my heart to pieces. (hide spoiler)]Mather, that was a surprising turn out of events. At the end of the first book I was so frustrated with his actions, I wanted to shake him and make him see reason. Meira loved him for so long and he acted so detached by the end of the first book that when I read from his perspective I don’t know what to believe anymore. I love Mather, I want him to be happy, but I also want Theron to be happy and ugh. But I have to admit, I spent a good 80% of the book rooting for Mather to win Meira back, to stop being so upset with everything and everyone and be there for Meira. She struggled so much throughout this book, she no longer knew who she was, who people wanted her to be clashed with whom she was for sixteen years. She was so lost and I’m glad she found an ally and a friend in Ceridwen. I’m really enjoying their alliance.(view spoiler)[Oh my god, I was shocked when Alysson was murdered! It was so unfair, Mather finally feels that at least one of his parents doesn’t see him as just a soldier, but as their son. It was like watching a baby get his new toy snatched out of his hands. I felt betrayed! And then William’s reaction broke me! (hide spoiler)] And ugh William is being so frustrating! I want to punch him and hope he wakes up to reality before it’s too late, why can’t he just be a father to Mather? He’s doing the same he did to Meira when she didn’t know she was the Queen. My heart cries for Ceridwen and Jesse, forget the main characters these two are my otp of the book!!! Such a tragic love story, I just want to shelter them from all the evil in the world!!!LOVED THE SEQUEL, NOW GIVE ME THE THIRD BOOK!!!

***I received the eBook free as a review copy from the publisher HarperCollins via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review***I don’t want to say it, I don’t, but I fear Ice Like Fire has a case of middle book syndrome *stares despairingly at beautiful cover*. There was so much politics and far less action than I would have liked (especially after the epicness that is the first book), it slowed down the pace tenfold. That said, I remained invested in the story and its characters.Meira, the newly revealed Winter Queen remains a protagonist worth admiring. Granted there were many moments when she struggled between being the person she thought the Winter kingdom needed and the girl who takes risks – I’m just glad that however long it took, she knows the best thing is to stay true to yourself.Theron and Mather are whole other stories… My heart is so confused; I don’t know what to do. Both have developed so much in different ways and while before I felt conflicted over liking both, now I’m not sure if I want either (with Meira of course *looks innocent* I wasn’t talking about me). Mather’s perspective was interesting, even though his chapters had godawful timing, and I welcomed the addition of the Children of the Thaw. Many more characters were introduced, my favourite being Ceridwen. I implore you to read this book if for no other reason than to see why this girl is so awesome.Another reason to pick up Ice Like Fire is the thrilling conclusion that lasted for 20% of the book. With things hitting the fan left, right and centre it has set up the third book in the best way possible. Already I can tell that it is not to be missed. Neither is this series, so if you haven’t started yet… you should!Posted on: http://enchantedbyya.blogspot.co.uk/

Fantasy has quickly become one of my favorite genres, something a year ago, I never would have imagined saying but, there you have it.When I read the first book in the series. Snow Like Ashes, I knew the author had come up with something original and fun and I couldn't wait for more. In fact, it was one of my favorite fantasy reads of the year and so Ice Like Fire was one of my most anticipated reads for 2015.This sequel crushed me. It tore me apart in some of the worst ways but also in some of the best.It played with my emotions, stomped on them, laughed at their sorrow and then slowly built them back up with kind words, pretty gestures, and lovely smiles, only to start the process all over again. To say I loved it, would be an understatement. This was everything I was hoping it would be.Lies, deceit. Betrayals. Promises. Friendships, secrets. Gah! So much happens and I sadly can't talk about any of it. Meira grows so much in this. I adore her. She makes mistakes, she isn't perfect but she does it all for her people, for those she loves and cares about. She is fierce and determined but still loving and kind and that is why she is the true heroine of the story. I am so proud of the person she has become and the person she has yet to be. I am in love with this series and after all that transpired, I need more. I crave more. It is going to be a very long few months until the next. So I part with these final words, well done Ms. Raasch, well done. *An ARC Copy of this was provided by the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.*

My Queen! My Queen? My Queen, ... Seems like all the minor characters in this book have only 1 line of dialogue. We get it, Meira is queen now. Also, I was about 2/3 of the way through the book and trying to think back to when I read the first of the series in January. I know I loved it. It was this series, right? Cuz this book doesn't feel like one I would have loved.... Am I losing my mind? Turns out, no. It just took a long time to get to the parts of this story that I liked and reminded me that yes, this is the same series I enjoyed so much earlier this year. The good news is, this book is a really fast read for being nearly 500 pages! As already mentioned, the first chunk of this book is a little frustrating. Not much is happening. Meira is full of self-loathing, ridiculous ideas about "what she needs to be" now, and is just really worked up about the possibility of opening the magic chasm. Mather gets some chapters in his POV and is also wallowing in pity. Nothing is really all that interesting and I really wanted to reach into the book and throttle them both. Once Meira, Theron, and their various entourages start visiting the other kingdoms I was really excited because these are new kingdoms that were really only briefly referenced in the first book and one thing this series does have is beautiful and unique (from each other, not necessary unique to literature) kingdoms. First stop, Summer! And wow. Yea that kingdom was awful, Simon is the worst and Ceridwen was not particularly likable. Ok, moving on....Oh great, Yakim is next. A kingdom of learning and books, this will be great! Right? Wrong! They are barely there, Giselle is completely dismissive, and then it's on to Ventralli. James could have been really interesting but then he amounted to basically nothing too. Then suddenly everything gets interesting! Meira and Mather both get their heads out of their asses. A bunch of crazy murderous, treacherous, treasonous, and otherwise loco stuff happens. Being fairly new to fantasy I'm just guessing that nothing here was all that original but we read certain genres because we like their formulas, no? With all the kingdoms and magic I'm expecting backstabbing and intrigue and general mayhem. And finally, finally this book delivered it at the end. So good. I will say that yes, this book was predictable. Once again, I saw the huge surprise twist coming from miles away. But that didn't change my enjoyment too much. I will be reading the finale, hopefully soon.
