The story revolves around a woman called Irena, a Czech expatriate living in France, and her return to her homeland. On returning she meets Josef, a fellow émigré whom she knew from the past as a lover.The novel examines the feelings of returning to an unfamiliar homeland after a long time, drawing parallels with Homer's Odyssey to prove its point. The novel explores love and its many forms of manifestations and the use of differing perspectives to prove a comical portrayal of selective memory leading to ignorance. The novel explains willful ignorance as a form of avoidance of unpleasant realities and also illustrates a picture of involuntary ignorance as denial of the past or feigning ignorance of the truth. “During the twenty years of Odesseus' absence, the people of Ithaca retained many recollections of him but never felt nostalgia for him. Whereas Odysseus did suffer nostalgia, and remembered almost nothing." “And there lies the horror: the past we remember is devoid of time. Impossible to reexperience a love the way we reread a book or resee a film.”One of my favorite passages from the book include the story of Jónas Hallgrímsson and the fate of his remains.".....nobody much cares where a dead person's bones wind up."An enjoyable read.

I lost my review- no idea how while copying it from my notes it could completely vanish. No backup - nothin!!I won’t even consider writing another one. Or typing out the excerpt I wanted to include. ( again)... I’m too mad! So...a couple of quick tip of the tongue thoughts: The reading is more cerebral than experiential. Thoughts about memory - forgetting- illusion & nostalgia are running themes ...There is sadness in coming home... returning home after twenty years away. We follow two lovers who each have loss spouses and are haunted by their past. Kundera is a complex- interesting author to read. Some of the writing is absolutely gorgeous. Some is a bit over-the-top pretentious. And... I like Kundera enough to want to read his other books. ( I own a few more)... so in due time! 3.7 rating

Estas son las cuestiones planteadas por Milan Kundera en "La Ignorancia".La novela es la historia sobre la pérdida de la patria. Narra sobre los sentimientos de una mujer y un hombre checos que habían emigrado de la Checoslovaquia comunista y que visitan su patria después de que ésta recuperara la libertad.Al pasar varios días en Praga, los dos ven que aunque hablan el mismo idioma que los praguenses, ya no los entienden, no comparten su estilo de vida, sus opiniones y su modo de pensar. El exilio ha erigido entre los exiliados y la población checa un muro de ignorancia y desarraigo.Los protagonistas llegan a la conclusión de que para ellos su patria de origen ha dejado de existir y regresan a los países que les acogieron y donde iniciaron una nueva vida.Kundera, decidió publicar la novela primero en español y catalán, y no en francés, idioma en el que publicó sus libros anteriores. La traductora al castellano de "La Ignorancia", Beatriz de Moura, explica que el escritor checo se sintió atraído por los refugiados espanoles de la Guerra Civil desatada en 1936. Por ello optó por estrenar su última novela en un "país de emigración", tal como se refirió a España.
