#IMomSoHard Audiobook Summary

In their highly-anticipated first book, the hilarious mom duo with millions of followers explores all the ridiculous shit you’re expected to do to keep multiple humans alive and happy-ish, and celebrates the love for the friends who get you through it.

Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley, the creators of #IMomSoHard, are just like you and your best mom friend, only funnier and with more wine. Perhaps you’ve seen one of their insanely popular videos musing on everything from impractical swimsuit fashions to “Things I Found in My Bra.” Or maybe you’ve gone to one of the shows on their sold-out tour, hailed as “monster truck rallies for moms.” Or you might have just taken a break from mom-ing so hard yourself and decided to read some adult words for a few minutes. Did you pour yourself some wine?

This is not a self-help book. Kristin and Jen know that you probably didn’t get to shower today and that the last thing you need is advice on all the stuff you’re doing wrong. Instead, Kristin and Jen talk nipple hair, sex after marriage, Mom-bods, and their unhealthy obsession with Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones. #IMomSoHard is packed with the back-and-forth laugh-out-loud best-friend banter that Kristin and Jen are known for, with plenty of real talk about post-partum depression, bullying, and the dark thoughts that plague every mom. Throughout it all, they know the ups and downs of motherhood often have nothing to do with your kids–it’s the female friendships and solidarity you have with other moms that makes it all worthwhile.

#IMomSoHard is like a long, funny, gab session with your best mom friends. Kristin and Jen know 6:00-8:00 pm is the worst time to call you. They know not to harass you when you show up to a playdate in a free t-shirt you got from the dentist. They won’t give pep talks, but they will talk you down from the motherhood ledge, because, congrats: you’re passing with a “C”–and that’s all any of us can hope for.

KRISTIN HENSLEY and JEN SMEDLEY have been performing, teaching, and writing comedy for a combined 40+ years. They have been moms for one quarter of that time and it shows. From Pinterest-induced panic, to trying to get your kid to eat just one damn green bean, to wondering why it feels like you disappeared the day you became a mom, they get it. They get you. Kristin and Jen know firsthand that parenting is a hard job and they invite you to join them in taking it all a little less seriously. After all, Jen currently has four days of dry shampoo in her hair and Kristin’s keys are still in her front door. They try, they fail, they support each other, and they mom as hard as they can.

#imomsohard is a popular web series started on YouTube by Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley. They're women, wives, and moms that talk about mostly hilarious women's and motherhood issues in pure, unfiltered honesty. They show the good, the bad, and the ugly, and make themselves look ridiculous on purpose so their viewers can know they're not alone on those hard days. A friend of mine introduced me to their style of entertainment when the swimsuit segment went live and I was immediately intrigued. The book #IMomSoHard is a mixture of memoir, behind-the-scenes information, and more laughs coauthored by both Kristin and Jen. It discusses the isolation of motherhood, the importance of having mom friends, the benefits of laughing, struggling with body image, practicing self-care, and remembering how every stage of motherhood felt so that we can lend a hand as needed (with and without being asked). I hope more empowering women follow in Kristin and Jen's footsteps to bring encouragement, perspective, and laughs to the world. Check it out.My favorite quote:“Self-care is really hard as a mother. Somewhere along the way, there was some shitty Hallmark card that told us that if we give all of our time to our kids and husbands, they will be better people. It's so untrue. Mothers who sacrifice everything gain nothing. Before we were mothers, we were women, and we still are. We gain nothing by missing a gyno appointment to make it to our kid's volleyball game. We gain nothing by skipping our one night with the girls to organize the garage. And we gain nothing by struggling in darkness without a few rays of light. We work this hard out of love but we've got to shine that lovelight on ourselves once in a while. It makes us better people. It makes us happier moms. It makes us healthier women.”Audiobook self-narrated by Kristin and Jen.

Warning: This will be a total fangirl review. So there are so many mommy bloggers, you tubers, mom duos with videos on Facebook, who are all over Twitter. I follow a bunch because I am a mom. One who does not have it all together. One who likes to know she isn't the only one just muddling through this parent thing. I have to say there are so many lovely ladies that are super funny, really honest and just seem to get the whole mommy thing. The ladies of #IMomSoHard are my favorite. Their video on trying on bathing suits might be my favorite things ever. Anyway, a lot of these mom peeps have books. Meh. These ladies have a book? Yeah I preordered that audio so hard. Listen a lot of the funny mom people out there do it in a way that sometimes is too much. Like trying too hard to be too funny. These ladies don't come off that way to me. They are funny, honest, caring and all in a way you know they love their kids and want them to be good humans. But it's hard man and they capture that perfectly. There were lots of times I laughed. Lots of times I cried. A real emotional rollercoaster I will tell you. They talked about things like the baby blues, when it is more than that, depression and anxiety, feeling good about yourself ( the book inspired me to buy lipstick and I must say I like it), sexy times with husband and how it changes after kids, how your body changes and friendships change. They talk about things that affect you like loss of a parent. We also get some insight into their friendship and their backgrounds. How they both grew up in Nebraska but didn't meet until a random time in California. How they both were into acting and comedy. How they decided to even start these videos and why.If you are a mom I really think this is worth the listen (or read). I bought the audio but am totally buying a hard copy version too. I love these ladies and felt #IMomSoHard too. This review was originally posted on Rebel Mommy Book Blog

I HIGHLY suggest listening to this one, because it made me laugh so many times. We are all different moms and we all need mom friends.I am thankful for the mom friends I have and hopeful for more great ones in the future. I love that these ladies although very different from myself were able to talk about some raw and relatable topics about being a mom. It was great to have their support and to support them in return. May all of us as mothers, women, human beings, all support one and love one another more now and every day in the future. 5 stars.

Books such as these I wouldn't pick to read because most things in them are relatable to me or are just targeted to a select audience. So when a few friends of mine read it and recommended that I do so as well, I thought, ok what the hell, why not! Well, I'm glad I did. Its hilarious and spot on on a few things that us as moms can relate to. I'm glad I read it and will definitely recommend to all of my mom friends. Now where is my wine.....😜

I grabbed this book on a trusted friend’s recommendation. I haven’t seen the #IMOMSOHARD series but, you guys, these are MY kind of moms. Kristin is basically me, except I *do* love banana-flavored candy. It’s honest and hilarious while discussing some very real issues about life and parenting. It’s the most relatable “mom book” I’ve ever read. Kristin and Jen remind us that we’re not alone which is perhaps the most important thing to remember on the toughest days.

These gals are hilarious! If these two moms are for real I congratulate this generation of moms to littles for getting it so right! What a funny funny look at raising our bambinos. There is a lot of emphasis placed on mom friendships in this book. Please just be easy on yourself if you are not in a season of mom friending and you’re just out there doing your own thing. It all has a way of working out. If you love your kids they will (almost always) grow up and love you back.

I’ve always enjoyed Jen and Kristin’s videos. They are so talented and I know I am not alone in thinking that they are the kind of people you feel instant kinship with. Like you’ve always been friends and always will be (which as a total stranger does not sound at all creepy.) Someone in my neighborhood was giving their book away FOR FREE and I immediately snagged it, thinking it would be a perfect light and fun read/pick me up. I finally got around to it like six months later, because that’s mom life.#IMOMSOHARD is a series of short essays exploring various aspects of life as a mother with Jen and Kristin’s trademark wit and humor. They do not hold back on sharing which makes them my people because I always am thinking to myself, “Should I have said that? Was that over sharing? Eh, whatever, it was funny!” Aside from bringing on giggles and full on belly laughs, these ladies are also really good at getting real and exploring the complex emotions we can feel as mothers and human beings in all our relationships. Life is complicated and messy and hard, but also funny and beautiful and full of joy. They don’t hold back on either side of it. And I think that is what made this not only an enjoyable but also a worthwhile read. I also felt like they had some pretty solid advice on parenting through difficult situations, through the examples they shared of how they handled certain things with their kids. I bookmarked a couple spots because I felt like I needed to remember those words for my own kids.Personally, I could not have read this at a better time. I have been feeling lost as a parent/person for the last few months (now I’M getting real), and this book ended up being more than just a fun, light read for me. It’s helpful to know that I’m not alone in feeling this way, and reading this was like girls night therapy which I have not been able to have in way too long. Thank you ladies, for helping me through a dark time. If you’re a parent, I 100% recommend this. I’m thinking about getting it as a gift for some fellow friends in the trenches of motherhood. If swearing or talking about sex makes you uncomfortable, proceed with caution. But as a parent, you probably do both those things regularly anyways. 😜

Originally published in 2019, I first spotted a paperback copy of the nonfiction humor book, "#IMomSoHard," by comedy duo Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley, in a Target store before Christmas in 2021, and then saw the audiobook at my library in June 2022. With a long road trip ahead of me, I grabbed t

I needed this book. I love these two and their videos, which I binge from time to time to have a good laugh and feel less alone as a mom. Listening to the audiobook was like having a hilarious best friend cheering me on, validating my thoughts and feelings, and telling me stories while I nursed, folded laundry, and rage cleaned. If you like their vids you’ll like this (audio) book. If you don’t, you won’t.

Holy crap these ladies are my perfect soul mates! I love how honest they are about parenting, life and living with your husband. I can honestly say I have felt everything they have discussed in this book. "As long as your kids are fed, safe, and happy sometimes, you're winning." "Be okay with average. Be a seven. It's a lucky number."After my 2nd kiddo, I realized this is what was most important. This made my life and mood so much better. If only I could get my hubby to feel the same way.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has kids or plans to have kids. Everything they discuss is spot on.
