L.A. Candy Audiobook Summary

L.A. Candy is a deliciously entertaining novel about what it’s like to come of age in Hollywood while starring in a reality TV show, written by a young woman who has experienced it all firsthand: Lauren Conrad.

Fashion designer and TV personality Lauren Conrad brings her insider knowledge of the highs and lows of life in the spotlight to this juicy New York Times bestselling series.

Los Angeles is all about the sweet life: hot clubs, cute guys, designer…everything. Nineteen-year-old Jane Roberts can’t wait to start living it up. She may be in L.A. for an internship, but Jane plans to play as hard as she works, and has enlisted her BFF Scarlett to join in the fun.

When Jane and Scarlett are approached by a producer who wants them to be on his new series, a “reality version of Sex and the City,” they can hardly believe their luck. Their own show? Yes, please!

Soon Jane is TV’s hottest star. Fame brings more than she ever imagined possible for a girl from Santa Barbara–free designer clothes, the choicest tables at the most exclusive clubs, invites to Hollywood premieres–and she’s lapping up the VIP treatment with her eclectic entourage of new pals. But those same friends who are always up for a wild night are also out for a piece of Jane’s spotlight.

In a city filled with people chasing after their dreams, it’s not long before Jane wakes up to the reality that everyone wants something from her, and nothing is what it seems to be.

When nineteen-year-old Jane Roberts is cast in a new reality show, she discovers that the fame and fortune of her new life come at a high price to herself and her friendships.I'm a huge Lauren Conrad fan, so this book is just right for me, I LOVE anything with LC's name on it!I felt as if Lauren wrote her own biography, but if you watched The Hills, you will be surprised to see that Jane is more like Heidi then Lauren, Baby face, wants to organize parties and events, and her BFF is so much hotter than Lo. More like a Whitney or Audrina then a Lo.I heard Lauren say once that Jane was inspired by her, Scarlett by Lo, Madison by Heidi, Gaby by Audrina and Hannah by Whitney.

Reviewed by Angela S. for TeensReadToo.comThis novel by reality TV starlet Lauren Conrad chronicles the lives of Jane Roberts and her best friend, Scarlett Harp, as they move to LA and become the stars of a reality TV show. The book, which is based loosely on Conrad's own life, is a little slow in the beginning, but picks up a bit once Jane and Scarlett are discovered at a club by a TV producer. From that point on the two, though a little hesitant at first, decide to audition for the show and their lives change drastically. While Jane takes to the cameras being around easily, Scarlett is not so excited and wonders what she got herself into. Throw into the mix two other cast members, Gaby, a total ditz, and Madison, a total witch with a nice girl facade, and things get even more complicated. When Jane starts dating Jesse, who happens to be the best friend of her friend-slash-major crush, Braden, things spiral out of control quickly and the jealousy of someone Jane thought she could trust ruins her life in an instant. With lots of run-of-the-mill Hollywood cliches (blondes, drugs, cosmetic surgery, etc), L.A. CANDY almost fails to deliver an original storyline. In addition, in pretty much every single chapter, Jane and her friends are drinking (usually vodka soda for Jane) making it seem to the unknowing person who has never been to LA that you can't have any fun in Tinseltown without being drunk. It is a quick and light read that would be great for the beach or a day when you don't need any actual depth in what you're reading. However, the ending is a cliffhanger and leaves you wanting to know what happens to Jane next.

Groundbreaking! A tour de force! Just kidding, I mean it's Lauren Conrad's teen novel... It starts off kinda slow and ho hum for a while, but once the characters in the book begin the filming of the reality show that they're on, it gets very interesting for any fan of The Hills. Although the accounts are "fictional," it definitely gives great insight and potential knowledge about how the producers impacted the storyline and the characters, how the characters interacted with each other, and what it was like to have their lives filmed. Likewise, it stirs up curiosity and intrigue of what was actually "real" or not on the show itself. An indulgent, quick read along the lines of other cerebral publications such as US Weekly. Looking forward to reading the next one!

I definitely thought that this was an amazing book! It had a really good plot, and kept me changing the pages quickly. I think that people would like this book because it is always a dream of people to go someplace new and create something for themselves. This book is about two girls named Jane and Scarlet who do just that. Jane is the quit girl next door character, and Scarlet is the exotic looking and out spoken character. The two of them make a great story because they are so different from each other. Some would say that this book is based off the reality show on MTV, the Hills. I agree with this statement, but I believe that the book is the more fictional take of the show. The book actually shares what happened behind the scenes on the Hills, and how it wasn’t as real as what everyone thought. It was Lauren Conrad’s take on how they made her do things like walk into a club four different times to just get the right shot, or text her on a date to speak louder so that the cameras could hear her. I wouldn’t advise anyone to read this book if they want to star on a reality TV show, because it gives you a negative opinion about that. But if you love reality TV and have no interest being on one, then I highly suggest this book. The only negative thing that I would say about this book is that the ending left you hanging too much, because in a book I like some closure. There are two more books that go after it though, so I would highly suggest that you read those also.

L.A. Candy was not what I expected. When I first heard of this book I thought "no way am I ever going to read this book". Then I saw it in Coles (Chapters Indigo, wtvs) and the cover really grabbed me, so I decided to borrow it from my friend and see if it was any good.I'm glad I did, I really liked this book. The beginning was a little slow I guess, but as I got more into it, I was hooked. I had the hardest time putting it down for even a few minutes.Conrad did an amazing job of this book. The ending was stellar. I can't wait to read the next book, Sweet Little Lies!If you get a chance, by all means, read this book! :)

** spoiler alert ** Personal Response:I enjoyed reading L.A. Candy by Lauren Conrad, because it was really interesting. It showed how fame can be good and bad. It was interesting to see another side of the people who are famous. It really demonstrated how fame is not all that good as I think it is. There were a lot of obstacles that famous people have to go through. For example, hiding from photographers or having to watch my every move, so people’s lives do not end up on the front of a magazine. I liked how the author used ordinary girls in the beginning of the book. I do not like how the author left the book on a cliff-hanger. It makes the audience wonder what is going to happen next.Plot:In the beginning of the book, two girls, Jane and Scarlett, move to the big city in California to get out of their comfort zones. Jane has an internship with a popular event planner and Scarlett is going to college. They live in a cheap run down apartment building, until they get a job offer they cannot refuse. They act like normal college kids until one day they went out and was offered interviews for being on a reality TV show. Their worlds are turned upside down in matter of hours. They sign the contract, move into fancy apartment, and get their daily lives all on tape now. They have camera crews following them, taping their every move to make an episode out of it. With all the fame, comes the paparazzi, people wanting to be friends, and the drama. Characterization: Jane is the quiet one in the beginning of the book. She is the one who has a hard time getting out of her shell and being more open. Her character demonstrates what it is like to be shy and not as easy going as her friend, Scarlett, in the book. In the end, it is Jane who likes being on the TV show. She likes the attention that she gets it from it, but it is tearing her and her best friend Scarlett apart.Setting:The book L.A Candy takes place in california during modern times. The setting is important, because L.A. is a really big city where people usually come to get famous. It has a lot of the movie and music production studios there. There is a lot of references to the culture in L.A. The time period fits in with modern life today with some of their references. Recommendation:I recommend this book mainly to teen girls in high school. It is based on two girls’ lives after high school and the path they take after high school. Some girls have dreams of going to big cities. It shows how much that it can impact their lives. It also shows how being famous can really put an impact on their lives. I give this book a four out of five stars.

Okay, so this is totally a guilty pleasure read. I have never seen The Hills with Lauren Conrad but I know of it and have seen commercials and the cast in other things. I have also already read Lauren's other series called The Fame Game and I really enjoyed it, I also realize that it does share some things about these characters in this series but I am still enjoying it. I love me some reality tv so this book was sadly, right up my ally. (haha)Decent Read!

Books like this are always a little hard for me to properly rate. I mean, I'm trying to assess a starred rating for my degree of enjoyment throughout reading the novel, but at the same time I need to account for the quality of the work over all, right? So, if I stepped back for a moment and pretended that Lauren Conrad was *not* the name on the front cover, how would I feel?Honestly, I did have a lot of fun with this book. Sure, it's pretty clear that our reality star princess was drawing heavily from her experience in reality television, but she did manage to tell the story, I thought, without making her representation in the book *too* perfect. (Like that Elle and Blair book, where both of their characters were so stunning that literally every single man stopped and stare at them? Egos, much?)As for the plot, Lauren aka Jane is just your average girl next door, living with her drop dead gorgeous, smart mouthed best friend Scarlett. The girls recently moved to LA -- Scarlett for school (since not only is she stunningly gorgeous, she's also nearly a genius) and Jane to intern for a party planner (and also to spread her wings to escape the mundane nature of her previous life). Although the two are said to be opposites, they are fiercely protective of one another and have been best friends for as long as they can remember.Jane and Scarlett are approached by a producer who leaves them a business card, saying that they would be perfect for his newest reality show -- LA Candy. The show is said to be a real life version of Sex and the City -- except with a younger cast and a setting of LA instead of NY. Neither girl is interested, so they stash the cards away and don't think twice...Except, well, Jane does. And the next thing the girls now, Jane has dragged Scarlett to the audition, which they both pass with flying colors. Cynical Scarlett still wants nothing to do with the show, but she knows that Jane is still fragile from a recent heart-break -- so, in being a good friend, she agrees to go along with the scheme. In the mean time, Jane meets a fabulous struggling actor -- and falls hard for him -- except he has a girlfriend. Then Scarlett and Jane meet their two cast mates -- Madison, a bitchy, spoiled rich girl and Gaby, a bubble-headed moron who actually seems like a pretty fun girl. Scarlett will be filmed in her classes, Jane at her job, Madison at... well, nobody knows what she does, and Gaby at her latest job (although, I already forgot what that was. The story mainly follows Jane and Scarlett and thus far Gaby has really just faded into the background). The cameras will also follow the girls together as they meet up at clubs and restaurants and whatever other spontaneous things the producers have obsessed over for hours. As the girls experience instant fame for the first time, Scarlett feels uncomfortable with the whole process, feeling that the editors are changing too many things to create plots that never really happened. Madison is angry to find out that Lauren aka Jane seems to be the primary focus of the reality show, which of course leads her to think up a few horrible schemes to tip the scales in her favor. Gaby really doesn't do much other than make dumb comments, and Jane gets herself in the middle of a crazy love triangle with not only an actor who has a girlfriend but also *his* best friend. The paparazzi are everywhere, the tabloids are begging for compromising photos, and at least one of the girls finds a way to betray everyone, although it's really no surprise which one *that* ends up being. All in all, though, LA Candy was incredibly entertaining, fun, juicy, and was a definite guilty pleasure that kept me interested enough that I'm about to start book 2, as soon as I finish this review. That said, there were a few things that drove me NUTS. For one -- the whole twisting a lock of hair around her index finger thing. AHHHHH, was there any need to keep repeating that, incessantly? Then, for a while, EVERYONE was grinning mischievously. And, finally, for a good little while I got to read pages of dialogue that pretty much read like.... he said, then she said, then he SAID, then she SAID. OMG!I'd say that Conrad, and/or her ghostwriter, definitely know how to tell a FUN story. Just, let's please get them a thesaurus before they start another series!

L.A Candy By: Lauren ConradJane: she is the main character. She had blond hair and is down to earth. She is an intern for Frion Chen, a well known party planer in the L.A celebrity seen. Jane wanted to become a party planer so she took the job to get practice.Scarlett: she is the very pretty girl that al the guys are attracted to. She could care less about what designer shoe was in and what was last months hot color. She is attending college at U.S.C.Madison: is the spoiled rich girl whose daddy and mommy buy every thing for. She is also one of the girls on the show.Gabby: she is the ditzy one. She just never really understands what the other girls are talking about on the show!Braden: one of the boys that makes things even more complicated in Janes new L.A life! L.A Candy is a drama filled book full of exciting gossip. Juicy details of last nights parties and hook ups never seems to get old for the two best friends, Jane and Scarlett. The two girls have been besites ever since they were younger. They grew up together and told each other everything! After graduating high school, they decided to move to L.A together and start up a new life! They partied and went to clubs together al the time! They thought it was so cool that no one ever carded them at clubs, and yes they were underage. The two girls were always checking out the cutest boys at whatever club or restaurant they went to. One night at “Big Wangs,” the two were standing at the bar ordering drinks, (now Jane always feels “unseen” because Scarlett is extremely pretty) this guy came up and started talking to them. At first Jane thought o yay great another guy for Scar, but nope, this guy was interested in her! Is name was Braden. I’ll put it this way, ever since this night they have had something going on! One of there first days in L.A they decided to go shopping. Because they were new to the town they had no clue where to go. They ended up walking in to this store where everything was all white. From all the cloths to the counter tops, white. The sales woman was extremely rude to Jane when she went to see how much a shirt was. This is when they met a new friend, Diego, but they called him D. He totally stood up for them and told the sales woman off. They all walked out of the store and went shopping do place else. Later the two are standing in a forever long line waiting to get in to a club when all of a sudden D pulls them out of line and in to the club with him. They just walked right in and didn’t have to stand in the line. The two made there way to the bar, as usual and order there drinks. Though they were enjoying themselves, they still had the awkwardness to them. They had never been somewhere where there were so many famous people everywhere they looked. This is when they were offered to star in the show “L.A Candy!” At first they were hesitant about the man who introduced himself as Trevor, a producer in L.A and wanted to have them addition for this up coming show! Well they ended up going to the addition and well hey, they there two of the stars on L.A Candy. Thought out the “show” (book), the girls lives start to change. From best friends doing everything together, to barley seeing someone who lives in the same apartment as you was hard on both of the girls. In the end they ended up getting used to it. There is defiantly a twist at the end and it is worth reading. It was one of the rare books that I just didn’t want to put down! In the end something that can bring you close to someone, can also tear up apart!
