Midnight Clear Audiobook Summary

Midnight Clear explores the family ties that bind and blind…[It] will make you laugh, make you cry, make you mad, and make you wonder right up until the very last page.” — Boston Globe

In this heartwarming, suspenseful, and hilarious novel, Callahan Garrity and the outrageous band of “girls” in her Atlanta cleaning crew join together during the Christmas rush to prove that her ne’er-do-well brother didn’t kill his tawdry estranged wife.

It’s a few days before Christmas, and sometime sleuth/full-time cleaning lady Callahan Garrity has things under control for a change, until her brother Brian shows up. He’s kidnapped his toddler daughter, Maura, from his estranged wife, a vengeful shrew with the law on her side.

When his ex-wife is found dead, the cops suspect Brian. To save her brother and her holiday, Callahan, along with her irascible mom, Edna, and a gaggle of House Mouse employees, will crisscross yuletide Atlanta, going everywhere the search for truth leads.

I chose this holiday themed mystery to occupy my time between Christmas and the New Year holidays and to round out my reading for the year and I was sucked into the story way more than I expected. I also didn't realize that it was part of a series so now I have to decide if I will go back to read the first 6 books in the series and any others that follow.I was expecting a Christmas mystery and got so much more: a child custody dispute, a deadbeat father trying to redeem himself, a young mother whose been murdered, and the holidays....

I'm almost certain I read this book in its first publication under the author's other name, Kathy Hogan Trocheck. So if you, like me, have a little trouble remembering titles after 10 or more years have gone by, check before buying. However, if you haven't read the Callahan Garrity series by Trocheck, which are now being republished in paperback as by Mary Kay Andrews, you are in for a treat and I highly recommend it. All the great humor and characters you love in Andrews' books, with a little more detective work, and some urban grit since they're set in Atlanta.(In fact I had read this in 2005; one comment from that reading was that this and the following book were a bit darker in tone than the earlier ones in the series).

Another fun, action-packed mystery solved by former cop turned private detective & entrepreneur, Callahan Garrity, and her quirky Southern crew!

I enjoyed this earlier book by MKA. It was a fun read with a realistic ending. And, honestly, I kept guessing at who the killer was actually going to be or how everyone was involved. I liked the twist at the end as well but I think my favorite thing might have been the blast from the past as this book was originally released in the late 90s. Also, as a person from Georgia it was fun to see a bit of my own small, hometown mentioned in the book.

This one was way more family oriented and developed the story of mom and daughter and their family dynamics. It was like going inside their mind and explained a lot of their relationship. We finally learn more about the long lost brother and are introduced to Maura his daughter. This series gets better with every book!

I was looking for more Christmas stories from Mary Kay Andrews and this is one that my digital library had but it isn't really a Christmas story. It is set at Christmas and it is about family, but it is also about a custody dispute and murder. I have not read this series but this book felt like a standalone novel. I enjoyed the mystery and the characters.

I LOVE this author and I LOVE Hillary Huber's amazing ability to sound like all the characters!!! I've listened to almost every book in this series and I'm never disappointed. Warning- this book does have some bad language. No explicit sex scenes. Just so you will know what to expect. I normally am offended by bad language and this series doesn't usually have a lot of it. This book deals with a lowlife brother and the language is pretty much isolated to his rants. It serves to make Jules' brother seem like a scumbag, which Brian is. This is the only part of the story I had an issue with, in that I didn't feel very sympathetic to Brian's plight. I didn't think he deserved to have custody of his little girl. I want to shake him until his teeth rattled. Pure full grown brat of a man. Ugh. But that's real life, so I'm glad Andrews is able to make him an authentic " lost Peter Pan" character. She did a good job of making him unlikeable.

Review of the audiobook. This is the second last book in the series and it makes me quite sad that the series is ending. The characters are great, the plots change with each book - this one involves a custody battle along with past and present murders. While sometimes you get a good idea of WHO, you don't know why so it leaves you questioning what you believe. This is just a good, strong series of mysteries.

It's a few days before Christmas and Callahan thinks for once she has things under control. Her presents are all bought, her baking is almost done, and she's relaxing with a well-earned drink when her brother, Brian--missing for over 10 years--strolls through the door, whistling off-key carols and lugging his 2-year-old daughter, Maura, in his arms. Happy as she is to see her charming brother and her ever-more-charming niece, Callahan hasn't forgotten that Brian carries trouble wherever he goes. That's never been truer than now, for Brian reveals he's kidnapped Maura from his estranged wife, who's on the warpath and, of course, has the law on her side. When Brian's ex-wife is found dead in her spectacularly messy apartment, the law comes down on Brian big time. True to form, Brian disappears again, leaving Maura behind for Callahan to look after, and forcing her to clear his name without his help. For Callahan knows that although Brian is many things, he's no murderer. As the Christmas rush picks up, Callahan, her irascible mom, Edna, and a gaggle of House Mouse employees submerge themselves in the most dangerous undercurrents of Atlanta street life, and head for wherever else in the New South's yuletide their search for truth leads them.

This is the seventh book in the series and was copyrighted in 1997. Check e-bay and Amazon for copies. This is another nice mystery that is suitable for all readers. It is coming close to Christmas and the Garrity’s are getting ready for the holiday and a party or the House Mouse crew. The situation becomes unstable when Callahan’s brother, who has been estranged from the family for years, suddenly appears and informs Callahan and her mother that he has a daughter and would like them to take care of her for a night. His former wife and mother of his child is murdered and the blame falls on him. It becomes a convoluted story as both his former wife and her mother have backgrounds that are tainted with men and parties.Callahan takes on the job of proving her brother’s innocence while she and her mother fall in love with the child. Callahan discovers her brother is not so bad but still remains a vagabond. She also discovers that the murder has far implications to his wife’s mother and her dealings with the company she keeps.A very good mystery with a nice little turn at the end that is unusual in this type of mystery.

This book #7 in the Callahan Garrity series and to date, this is by far my favorite in the series. This has so much suspense and drama I had to know how it ended and I was not disappointed. Excellent! I so enjoy how Hillary Huber reads the characters. Hillary is fabulous at changing character voices. Callahan Garrity is my hero. Smart and confident, she gets to the bottom of a murder investigation and child abduction case. Callahan doesn't always follow the rules, but she gets the job down and she doesn't scare easily. She is determined to bring the killer to justice and gain legal custody of her niece. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

My favorite book in the series. Callahan's youngest brother shows up out of no where with a toddler daughter in tow. He's been missing 10 years. He left after the passing of their father and had not been heard from since. Along with his return home, his mom is over the moon to meet her first granddaughter. As he is fighting his wife for visitation of his daughter, he becomes embroiled in a murder investigation. And Callahan has to find the truth with the hope of relieving their mother of heartbreak.
