Lola M. Schaefer's book, "Mittens at School" is a funny book about Mittens, the kitten, who is supposed to be his owner, Nick's, show-and-tell. When the class leaves the room, Mittens escapes his cage and tries to find something to do. He explores the classroom and causes some mischief while the teacher and students are away. This book has short sentences and repetition, which is great for beginner readers. This book also has numerous examples of onomatopoeia, which makes reading more fun and interesting. Mittens is appealing as a character because he is curious, innocent, and most of all because he is an adorable kitten.

I recently purchased Lola M. Schaefer's "Mittens at School" for my daughter in addition to Alyssa Satin Capucilli's classic work, "Biscuit Goes to School." While readers are likely more familiar with the lovable puppy, Biscuit, Mittens is also a cute pet. She is a gray and white cat. In the 24-page book we see a cat acting like a cat (i.e., getting bored then doing things to scare herself). The book is an easy read with several short, easy words that are great for preschool kids and beyond. If you have a child who likes animal stories, school stories, and both combined then this is the book for that child. I, personally, prefer it to "Biscuit Goes to School" because there is at least an attempt to control the animal and not let it get into dangerous situations. Now, for the plot...SPOILER WARNING!It all begins when Johnny, Mittens' owner, brings MIttens to school for show-and-tell. Mittens is in a carrier with no food or water, which is not very responsible, the reader is left to wonder just how long MIttens is meant to be in the carrier. I am going to assume it was only a short period so as not to make any accusations against Johnny's parents that I cannot take back. No one needs a fictional defamation suit!Well, Mittens has two choices. She can either sleep or try to escape. Twenty-four pages of a sleeping cat would probably be more realistic, or the cat mewing so loud that neighbors would start beating on the wall then call the landlord. Thanks a lot, Mr. and Mrs. Jones! But I digress...that would not be a fun book. Instead, Mittens gets herself out of the carrier. Then Mittens plays with some math beads...then they crash. Then the piano...then it slams shut. Then she plays with a book...and knocks it to the ground. Uh oh. Mittens is busted by the teacher and boy is she mad! After a brief interrogation, Johnny fesses up. Mittens is his cat, and he'll take responsibility. I don't want to give away the ending, but you'll never guess what happens next!

Synopsis: "Mittens is visiting Nick's school, and he wants to see everything. But exploring the classroom while everyone is away might get this little kitty into big trouble!Emergent readers will share Mittens' curiosity about school and relish the happy ending to his newest adventure."My Review: These Mittens stories are absolutely perfect for those beginning readers. The words and sentences are short and familiar. Anything that they don't understand can be gotten from the cute illustrations. This one was also a fun introduction to things that can be found in a school classroom.

Mittens is a series similar to Biscuit. This story shows how Mittens behaves when taken to school for show and tell. The text and illustrations are very supportive for the I Can Read concept. I'll make sure I get this series to compliment my Biscuit books. Great find for my school!
