Text-to-World ConnectionThis book was written from the point of view of the oldest son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In this story, young Martin III described what it was like growing up as Dr. King's son. I can imagine him being confused about why so many people hated what his father was trying to do, yet others were so supportive. Martin III described how he was treated unfairly because of his skin color and because of the fact that he had the same name as his father. Some of that discrimination is still going on today. He talked about how his father fought peacefully for equality and for laws to be changed so that everyone would be treated fairly. Those laws have benefited us even to this day. I chose this book because we just celebrated Dr. King's birthday and his national holiday.

1. "Riding to Washington" by Gwenyth Swain an illustrated by David Geister, 2008.2. I chose "Riding to Washington" as my twin text because it shows a different perspective on the Civil Rights time period. This is probably the first time many will be learning about the time period, so I think it is very important to balance a non-fiction story with a young African American male character with a partner text about a young, caucasian female character. In each book, the children are gaining insight and perspective on a situation much larger than themselves, and both texts show growth and maturity as well, which is never a bad topic to reiterate with children.3. This book utilizes two structures, Description and Chronological sequence. Martin Luther King III describes his childhood as he slowly recognizes and respects his father's mission. A short epilogue describes how Martin Luther King Jr. died and also discusses the respect he still holds for his father. A Venn Diagram would be a great activity to connect these two texts. I can just imagine students pointing out the different experiences Martin Luther King III and Janie had in these books. There were also a handful of moments where they had similar realizations or learning experiences, and a Venn Diagram would be the perfect way to point out those very important lessons! 4. My Daddy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a children's picture book written by Martin Luther King III and illustrated by A.G. Ford. His oldest son, Martin Luther "Marty" King III remembers the civil rights leader with affection and pride. Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and I thought it would be apropos to read this book today.Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.King's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, personable, and informative. Personal anecdotes appear throughout this picture book biography, demonstrating how King's activism at times took a toll on his family, yet get a sense of his father's reputation and goals amidst these anecdotes. Backmatter includes an extensive afterward. Ford's oil-and-acrylic paintings depict both the likenesses of the King family and the close-knit bond that saw them through many dark moments. The premise of the book is rather straightforward. Called Marty as a child, Martin Luther King III spent his childhood learning difficult lessons about segregation, jail and protest marches. Through each successive anecdote King grows up and better understands his father and his viewpoints on race and equality. All in all, My Daddy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is an effective title to introduce young readers to Dr. King’s message of peace and equal rights through the eyes of a child – His.

This book is written for ages 4-8 around a Lexile level of AD680L. It was written by Martin Luther King III “Marty” the son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the beginning of this book he states “This is a book about my daddy, what it was like to live with him and how much I loved him.” Throughout the book he does just that, he talks about his everyday life and how having Dr. King as a father influenced him. From being afraid that people won’t like him because of who his father is, to destroying their toy gun because they were practicing nonviolence at home as well. He tells this story through very proud eyes and you can really feel how much he loved his father throughout. The Illustrations are beautifully done to reinforce the emotions and capture this love throughout. I love that this memoir is told from a child’s perspective because it makes it relatable for the young readers. They can understand that this issue wasn’t just an “adult issue,” it affected everyone. Often children don’t understand the depth of issues going on around them and how people are working for change and the impact that has. Marty does a great job of showing a big part of what Dr. King stood for, that we have to stick to our morals and beliefs even when its hard and when everyone around us is doing other things it’s important to hold true to ourselves in order to influence others to do the same and make the world a better place.

Having a famous dad during a time of protest and unrest couldn’t have been easy for a young boy growing up in the south. But, Martin Luther King III, or Marty as he was called so not to be confused with his famous dad, learned to be unafraid and stand tall. He was afraid every time his dad was arrested or went to march. When his dad was home he was just that, dad. Marty learned that nonviolence was the best way to help so many people.Readers are invited into the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through the eyes of his son. Readers can learn about the marches and the cause that reached across a nation. Parents and teachers can use this as a tool to talk about the Civil Rights movement, life in the south and family values.

I loved this book. It was through the perspective of his son Martin Luther King III. He wrote from his childhood perspective. He discussed about the fact of what it was like growing up with his father. He said, that when his father came home from work he acted as a normal father. He also wrote about how his dad's work ended him in jail, and how it effected his childhood. It was a pretty lengthy book.

What a great way to get early elementary school (and PreK) kids to see MLK Jr. as more than a famous and inspiring name in history books. This gets them seeing him as a daddy! A daddy who sometimes wasn't there with them, because he was busy working to make the world better for them as well as for other kids like them. They had to share their daddy with the world more than most kids do, yet from the eyes of his eldest son, he couldn't be more proud.

A wonderful book about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. written from the perspective of his son as a child. It helps make difficult concepts of race and segregation easier for my first and second graders to understand. I read it to my students every year.

Diverse - Powerful images that showed Dr. King as both a father and as a leader. Relatable tone for young children and a strong message of the importance of judging by character and not by skin color, about helping others and family.
