My Life Among the Serial Killers Audiobook Summary

Dr. Helen Morrison has profiled more than eighty serial killers around the world. What she has learned about them will shatter every assumption you’ve ever had about the most notorious killers known to man.

Dr. Helen Morrison, a leading expert on serial killers, has spent as many as four hundred hours alone with depraved murderers. In My Life Among the Serial Killers, Dr. Morrison relates how she profiled Richard Otto Macek, who chewed on his victims’ body parts, stalked Dr. Morrison, then believed she was his wife. She conducted the last interview with Ed Gein, the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. John Wayne Gacy, the clown-obsessed killer of young men, sent her crazed Christmas cards, and gave her his paintings as presents. Dr. Morrison has received letters from killers, read their diaries and journals, evaluated crime scenes, testified at their trials, and studied photos of the gruesome carnage. She has interviewed the families of the victims, and the spouses and parents of the killers.

Through it all, Dr. Morrison’s goal has been to discover the reasons why serial killers are compelled to murder, how they choose their victims, and what we can do to prevent their crimes in the future. Her provocative conclusions will stun you.

Awesome tales from a medical professional's study of serial killers. Written in a very readable style that is informative but not burdensome with facts. I wish there were more books by this author.

An interesting read. The author states that she was given a slice of John Wayne Gacy's brain, which she keeps in a jar in her basement. Creepy much?

Insightful as all hell, and incredibly interesting. Since I like to fancy myself a true crime fanatic, it baffles me that I had never heard of Doctor Morrison or of her tireless hours spent with some of the world’s most depraved men and women. A fantastic read for anyone who considers themselves a crime buff. It’s about time that this badass woman gets her moment in the sun, even though it’s clear that has never been her intention.

This book was very interesting and very different from anything I have read in my past. I have been very, very interested in Forensic science and serial killers but not in the sick way, in the way that I have always wanted to figure them out, and find out why they do what they do. I have always wanted to become a doctor of the mind or a behavioral analyst in the FBI so reading these types of things help me be secure that this is what I want to do. This book is about forensic psychiatrist Helen Morrison and her encounters and findings about multiple different serial killers, such as John Wayne Gacy, Richard Macek, Ed Gein, The Yorkshire Ripper, Wayne Williams etc. I loved the chapters where she focused on their minds and why they did what they did, some born sick, and some shaped this way by their family and friends, damaged so they decided this was the solution. The way Morrison was able to analyze and break down the minds if all of these serial killers amazes me and I want to be able to do that one and help rid the world of people like them because what they did to innocent people for no reason but self pleasure makes me sick. What I noticed while reading this is that there were many times in these people' lives BEFORE they began killing that you could tell like, man, this one is not right in the mind, and this one is going to do something unless somebody stops them, and I want to also be that person who does something before. I really appreciate people who do the traumatizing work that Morrison has done and still does, and it amazes me how messed up and complex the human mind can get. I also loved the section in the center of the book with the gallery son we can a visual on all these men and really dive into what it looked it. I rated this book 4/5 stars because although I loved it a lot and found it very interesting there was some parts where Morrison kept talking and talking about thing that I felt was not really relevant to the topic being discussed, but other than this, it was great and I recommend it 100% to anyone who enjoys forensic science and understanding the mind of a serial killer.

The book was so very interesting and yet disturbing to know that these kind of people are out there and they exist the way they do and to know that these people look like us are human like us. But inkclike we do but at the same time we think exactly like them but they proscess things differently they act differently than us because oF a mental issue or a bad life experience these people are different yet the same as we are . Also the way Helen Morrison got inside their minds She understood them took the time to delve deep into their mind is magnificent and the discriptive of her scenery and her experiences. The story that most entreged me was Robert berdella whom kidnapped men and preformed interesting experiments on his subjects whom believed they weren't human and kept meticulous records of the torture. The most peculiar thing is he didn't believe he did any wrong because one they were only animals to him and two it was for science. There are many more stories in this book such as this of john Wayne gacy who killed young boys and stuffed them In his walls and in his floors. It's also tells the story of ted bundy the violent woman raper who had no recollection of doing these crimes. It also tells of bobby joe long and Jeffrey dalhmer the caniblistic killer in Wisconsin whom also did not recollect any of his killings he would say he would only remebering waking up next to dead mutilated body's and he was afraid of himself. And the notorious Edward gien ever see Texas chainsaw massacre based on him his mother died and he kept her dead body he also would kill people and turn them into furnature he was also inspiration for hitchcocks book and many movies phsyco this is a must read

This book was chilling and so disturbing in the most twisted I can’t put it down kind of way, I really enjoyed the audible version and hearing the author who is also the narrator relive what she went through and heard. She is a trooper for actually talking with these people and learning about them.

Doing research on serial murderers, I found the book to be helpful, eye-opening, and gruesome. Unlike other reviewers, I thought the interviews were compelling and informative. I do agree that the author has more opinions than the basis for them.

I enjoyed this book. I seen the negative reviews and was a little worried that it was a waste of time to read it. But, it wasn’t. I learned a lot about a different view Of what makes a serial killer kill , without spoilers being said 🙂 .
