My Very ’90s Romance Audiobook Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgan comes a hilarious romantic comedy about a down-on-her-luck florist whose future begins to bloom when she takes on the challenge of helping to transform her nerdy roommate.

Holly is a frustrated florist whose life doesn’t seem to be coming up roses. Fleeing a roommate situation from hell, she moves in with a motley crew of friends–Josh, a sexually confused merchant banker; Kate, a high-flying legal eagle with talons to match; and Addison, a gorgeous computer geek who spends his days communicating with his online girlfriend and anyone who worships at the altar of Jean-Luc Picard. From the moment Holly catches a rare glimpse of Addison, she’s smitten. The only problem is how to get him to swivel his chair from the computer screen to her adoring gaze.

After a series of false starts–involving a new friend and mathematician, Finn–Holly coaxes Addison away from his computer screen and out into the open. While “out in the open” spells disaster for Addison, curiously, her own future begins to bloom. Holly and her friends make desperate attempts to connect with Addison, drag him away from his fiercely possessive girlfriend, Claudia, and get him to communicate with the real world.

With Jenny Colgan’s trademark wit and a cast of unforgettable characters, My Very ’90s Romance will capture your heart.

** spoiler alert ** What a hilarious story filled with memorable moments and characters! My favorite scene in the book was when Addison was in the hospital with a coma and his flatmates were attempting to awaken him. The situation quickly became a three ring circus. Some of my favorite characters were Mr. McClockerty (aka God), Dr. Flowers (aka Dr. Hitler) and Chali (lead singer of the band Mr. Big and the Spangles).

I can't believe I read a chick-lit book, but I couldn't resist this tale of Holly, a financially-challenged young florist who falls for Addison, her hot computer geek room-mate. It turned out to be an hilarious read with some unusual elements. Hot computer geek? Do they really exist? Stereotypes aside, just because someone is extremely attractive doesn't mean they'll gravitate towards image-conscious careers. While I can't say that I've personally met too many computer geeks who resemble Johnny Depp, it's not implausible that there are a few out there. Holly falls for Addison purely because of his appearance. She doesn't really know him, since he spends all his time glued to his computer, but that doesn't stop her from pursuing him avidly. Addison has an Internet girlfriend, Claudia, also a computer geek, who works for the government and has high-level clearance. Claudia is enormously overweight and extremely unattractive. Cute perky Holly is convinced that Addison would naturally prefer her, a real-life, attractive, slim girlfriend, to his physically unappealing cyber girlfriend, but things don't turn out the way she expects. I give the author a lot of credit for writing so sympathetically about Claudia and Addison's relationship. With chick-lit, you expect the hot people to get together and the girl to get her guy. Colgan understands that for computer geeks and other personality types, good looks might not count for as much as for the general population. The way Addison explains this to Holly is really quite touching, but the book isn't overly sappy or sentimental. It's a light-hearted, comic read with a happy but unexpected ending. It can also be regarded as a cautionary tale about falling for someone based purely on their appearance. But mostly, it's just hilarious, in a that peculiarly British way that I find especially entertaining.

This was great fun! There are some pretty serious things happening in the second half of the book, but I was confident that the author would give us the ending I wanted. While there is romance, the main focus of the story is on the friendship between four flatmates who approach their thirties. It is told from the pov of Holly, who seemed rather self-absorbed and immature to me, but in an honest way that I quite enjoyed. As the title clearly states this is set in the 90ies and is meant to feel dated. The humor worked for me. Very London. The narration was amazing! I highly recommend to listen to the audio.

This was a fantastic read! I loved Holly for the fact that she was such a generally happy girl who wasn't overly ambitious (rather a slacker) and quite content to remain that way. I also love, love, loved Addison. A geeky Johnny Depp? What more does a girl need? It was a tad on the darkly humorous side which I also enjoyed very much. The last 1/8 of the book seemed a little chaotic but other than that I've no complaints.

I’m so surprised people are not marking this book 3+ stars. I thought the book was hilarious. However, I did listen to the audiobook. The narrator was brilliant. The perfect choice for all the characters. I even purchased a physical copy for me and friends. Moderate profanity. Mild sexual content.

I like listening to Jenny Colgan’s books - and this one was a treat. It’s funny and cute and I like how everything isn’t perfect and that it doesn’t follow a straight path.

Holly is an underemployed florist who must move in with friends to escape (another) bad flatmate situation. In the ensuring weeks she develops a crush on one of her flatmates (the one she didn't already know), a computer nerd with agoraphobia and an online girlfriend. As with many of Colgan's books there's no good way to describe My Very 90's Romance. It's a slice of life story, but the characters are so well drawn, and the plot so realistic (mostly), that the author keeps the reader captivated. The writing is filled with humor and is extremely readable. Highly recommended.

A YMMV Review! My Very ’90s Romance by Jenny Colgan is the freaking funniest book I’ve read in a long time. I cannot tell you how many times I laughed-out-loud while reading about the antics of Holly, the flaky florist whose lips know no censor. However, before I continue and talk about the characters and the plot, I need to add a caveat before you run out to buy My Very ’90s Romance before reading to the end of the review. This book is definitely not for those who are easily offended, the political correctness police, or those striving to find the meaning of life in a book.Onwards.The best way I can think of to describe Holly is to think of Bridget Jones of the infamous diary and imagine that compared to Holly, Bridget is very well put together, stellar really with a solid life plan. Holly, however, is a trainwreck, a self-deprecating hot mess, a woman who could have been a brazenly funny ’70s comedian, an unambitious snarky teenager in a 28-year old plumpish body. She almost always says what she thinks for good or bad and yet, underneath, the reader gets glimpses of a bit of a fragile soul.read more: http://saschadarlington.me/2019/03/13...

I thought Little Beach Street Bakery was my favorite Jenny Colgan novel, as the first time I read it I, too, was making my own way in the world for the first time after the breakdown of my relationship (though with my toddler son and not a baby puffin), so I felt an immediate connection to Polly (which always helps when you're reading a book, to identify with the main character, but I would have loved the book anyway). Then I read My Very 90s Romance, which I was uncertain about at first based on the back cover description, but I loved it from beginning to end. I loved the characters, I loved their bluntness and irreverence towards each other despite their love and affection for one another, and of course the comedic situations Holly constantly found herself in (and often caused), as well as her commentary and murmured remarks. I literally laughed out loud at several parts of the book, which I almost never do. This book is definitely underrated on Goodreads and the other reviews are just not fair. Another bonus: While there was some mention of politics with Sophie's character, and yet another unlikable American character (seriously, does JC just not like Americans? LBSB's Reuben was intolerable and the Island's Tripp was abominable until the end), My Very 90s Romance clearly predated Colgan's habit in recent years of shoving a social agenda down the throat of her readers, almost like she's now sponsored by the NHS itself. It was nice going back to an earlier book of hers that I could enjoy without the political undertones ruining the pleasurable escape that reading fiction should be, without constant reminders of the political environment in the world today, and feeling both marginalized and demonized by how she writes characters that don't agree with her on political points.

** spoiler alert ** This book was pretty hilarious, like guffawing-with-my-headphones-in-while-the-people-around-me-stare-in-alarm hilarious. I liked the story a lot. I liked that Holly was always having to deal with her fuck-ups, and people called her on it. I liked that she didn’t get Addison in the end. I’m glad Claudia and Addison end up together. From what I can tell, the general consensus of this book is that it is problematic. Josh’s “gay” behavior is a constant joke, as is Claudia’s appearance. I think the fact that Holly is a bit of an asshole in this regard makes her more believable as a character. She’s not a perfect, flawless character to whom bad things happen. She’s a jerk, and she learns she won’t always get her way. She also learns that who she thinks she wants may not be who she needs. I loved that Addison and Claudia had this long distance thing and that she conquers her agoraphobia to be with him in his time of need. The fact that he’s gorgeous and doesn’t forgo Claudia for a “more appealing” option because he sees her for who she is warms my heart. This book seems to have originally been published in 2000, so I can guess it was written in 99, if not earlier. I think I was more lenient with the faux pas in this book because I knew it was written 20 years ago. Society has a long way to go, but the way we treated homosexuality and larger bodies 20 years ago is pretty different from how we treat it now. I think if these things were said in a book written today, I’d be a bit more salty. But I was able to shelf those issues and keep reading. Admittedly, the humor helped a lot. This book is an enjoyable cotton candy read. It’s not going to stimulate a deep conversation about the human condition, but it’s funny as heck.

Colgan's books have definitely become a guilty pleasure of mine...except, maybe I can just say a pleasure of mine and drop the "guilty". I think it's time I embraced that I've entered the rom-com stage of my life. I'm certainly more likely to turn on a clever and fun Hollywood romance than I am some dark and depressing drama, and that should be OK, right? I don't have to feel shame for that, yeah? Love stories are great, especially ones that feature relatable protagonists who are witty and adorable. And that's what Colgan writes. This book was my first time venturing beyond her "Scottish Bookshop" trilogy and it's just as engaging. Yes, OK, there are a few moments where I had to suspend my disbelieve (especially with some of the ridiculous hospital/fundraiser/concert scenes), but...shrug...it's all in good fun. The challenge for me moving forward will be pacing myself with her books. As much as they're fun and fresh for me right now, I know that if I started to binge them, the charm would likely wear out. My plan is to save her stories for nice easy palate cleansers after dipping into other genres or some higher literature.

4.5 out of 5. Lots of laugh out loud moments! I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting. It's a lot funnier than the other Jenny Colgan books I've read and I got through it much faster too (great pacing and flow!). Although I did get annoyed with how much Holly was obsessed with Addison (or rather, the idea of him), she did make up for it in moments where she acted sincere and caring towards him, like a normal friend. I loved the relationship between Holly, Josh, and Kate. Holly and Kate are frenemies but, ultimately, they are there for each other. All 3 friends are sensitive to each other's moods and there are times when they are just so cute! Especially Josh. He was very confused indeed. And I really liked how inclusive they all were as flatmates and how they encouraged each other; although, I did wish they would have more strongly discouraged each other when it was obvious one of them was about to do something very stupid. Overall, I enjoyed this very much!

You can always depend on Jenny Colgan to bring a great story with fun characters who will give you a laugh as they tell their stories. This novel is full of a motley crew of characters: main character Holly who is trying to find her place in the world while she finds a boyfriend is working as a florist. She moves in with three other people - Josh - a banker unsure of his sexuality, Kate - a lawyer who is also a bit of a bitch and Addison who never leaves his room and his computers. As this group of acquaintances works to become friends, there is some pain but a lot of laughs along the way. Though I am a bit too old to understand what the characters were going through, I still enjoyed this book.NOTE: This is a re-issue of a 2010 book TALKING TO ADDISON.

Maybe it's just me but I found this book hilarious from beginning to end. As I read it played out in movie scenes in my head and that made it even more enjoyable. I was even reading this with a british accent lol I think it makes you do that. I didnt expect the twist and turns the book took so I was absolutely unable to put the book down because I needed to know what was happening. It was a great read! Very funny.

First off, I read a couple of books in-between, because I couldn't fall into this, like I usually do with her books. It was one of her early books, a very 90's book, also very British, too.I came to enjoy and care about the characters, even tho they are all very neurotic. One of the characters definitely has Asperger's syndrome and he is truly the most lovable. Well worth a read!
