Not my favorite Liz Carlyle story, but 3* wasn't enough, so it's a weak 4*. Part of the problem may be that I read book #3 first, not realizing it was part of a series. I now have the rest of the series, so hopefully it will grow on me.

Review:A TOUCH OF SCANDAL is the first installment in New York Times Bestselling author, Liz Carlyle’s new Regency historical romance trilogy.Grace Gauthier has just been accused of cold-bloodedly killing her employer--who indecently happens to be her ALMOST-fiancé. Leaving her destitute homeless and scared for her future. In search of a family friend, Sergeant Rance Welham, Lord Lazonby to help her out of this awful predicament Grace lands on the doorsteps of the Society; face to face with the tons Devil Prince himself, Adrian Forsythe, Lord Ruthveyn. Who coincidently happens to be Welham‘s best friend. Not know what else to do Grace confides in the charismatic stand-offish man before her. Ruthveyn hearing her plight reluctantly agrees to help her in clearing her name. On one condition. That Grace move in to his home and under his protection, as a governess to his to hellion nephews. As her employer Ruthveyn’s name will give them the time he needs to uncover the true murderer. This giving Adrian easier access at keeping the young beauty alive and out of harms way. But just how far will they both go to protect the other from the harsh realities that are flooding them.Born with aristocracy blood running through his veins, Lord Ruthveyn should have an easer go at life. But hard ships and a deep secret keep this devilishly wicked man at bay. Being able to see the horrors of the world isn’t what Adrian would call a gift but a curse. Having envisioned evils to reprehensible to name Adrian keeps his life and himself securely tucked away. Not allowing anyone to remotely touch his heart. That is, until Grace Gauthier, with her classic English beauty and beguiling blue eyes walks into his life, forever changing his world. The two come together, rather reluctantly but to an all consuming passion that neither can understand. Fiercely independent, Grace enters this affair knowing full well that even if she give her heart to this dynamic Lord eventually she will be leaving…heartbroken.. Bolden by this exquisite beauty and her selfless giving of her heart and soul Adrian feels unworthy and selfish for taking what she offers, but can do nothing to fight this unbreakable bound between them. They say that fate takes its course but Adrian believes that with his GIFT he is more likely to control the outcome of the ones he loves. Self-sacrificing the love he and Grace shares. Ruthveyn tries in vain to pull away from Grace but only to no avail to be drawn deeper into this unknown power that binds them together. ALLCOLADE:I have been a long time admirer of New York Times bestselling author, Liz Carlyle. Her stories are breathtakingly romantic. Never disappointing her readers. ONE TOUCH OF SCANDAL is beautifully written with a dynamic prose that will give her readers ecstatic hours of reading pleasure. Ms. Carlyle is simply one of todays' master story tellers that weaves every pivotal moment into pure magic.

I read the second book in this series first and it didn't impress. This one is a much better advertisement for the franchise. Not as much exposition about the Fraterinas or if so, it's not as dry.The love story between Grace and Rauthavin starts in the midst of a murder and continues to simmer and then boil over in passion that is erotic and compelling. Dark forces surround them as do extra sensory abilities within themselves and their compatriots.Sexy, seductive and satisfying.

There is a lot going on in this book and it could technically go into a romantic-paranormal box depending on the reviewer. I personally liked it, but again all the information was a lot to process in addition to following the twists and turns of the romantic plot. Overall, closer to 4 stars than 3 and definitely a yes to reading the next book in the series.

Once upon a time the heroine could count herself as content if not truly happy. She had a wealthy gentleman who’s offered her marriage and his two young daughters have offered her the prospect of being a mother. Life was peaceful. Then her world came crashing down. Her fiancé had been murdered in his own home, she herself discovering his body. In the span of one night, she is homeless, families and under the suspicion of murder. Her only hope is an old acquaintance of her deceased father. Grieving the loss of the man who she may not have loved but did indeed care for, she arrives that the F.A.C club only to discover the man she seeks has left London. In his place she meets the imposing and rather frightening hero. The hero has not had an easy life. His gift for seeing death in the eyes of those he meets and from touching them skin to skin has made him feared even among his family. He is also horribly tormented by what he’s seen. So much so that he rarely sleeps and depends upon hashish to cope with the visions. He also is terribly lonely having no real chance of ever marrying in fear that his visions will drive him crazy. Then he meets the heroine. She is beautiful and is every bit as light as he is dark. He feels protective of her. She too is as lonely as he is having been shut out from the life she once knew and from the start he feels a frighteningly deep connection to her though he fights his emotions. This doesn’t stop him from taking her into his home as a governess for his nephews and this doesn’t stop him from succumbing to the overwhelming desire to kiss her. He can see that there is no way she could ever be capable of murder and vows to see her name cleared, even if this passion to be her champion casts suspension on him from his family and friends. Their passion and desire for one another is hot and burns off the pages and though the heroine welcomes her dark hero into her bed, she knows that he is holding himself back emotionally. Fear that one day he’ll look into her eyes and see her death is too much for him to bare and as such, he foolishly risks the possibility of never knowing the love they could share. I thought this book was absolutely amazing. I swooned over the tortured hero who was actually a kind person at heart and devoted to his calling to help his fellows via the club even though visions he saw in the service of the crown plague him still. It broke my heart to read about how he doesn’t know how to interact with his own nephews for fear of his gift or the fact that he can only sleep when he’s in the heroine’s arms. I found him to be an engaging character with just as many virtues as flaws though he doesn’t see himself that way. And as much as I loved the hero, I loved the heroine. The heartbreak I felt as she sobbed at the gates of the cemetery holding her fiancés body, she being excluded from even paying her respects, was great. And I felt so deeply connected to these two characters that I never wanting this book to end. But I can say that from start to finish I was hooked and never wanted to put it down. So rare now a days with the number of books I read to find one that captures my attention so fully that I know I will remember it always. I eagerly await the time in which I can read it again and highly recommend this book to any reader who claims romance novels are drivel and not worth their time. For this book will show them that even ‘cheesy’ romance novels can be poetic.

I hadn't gotten very far into this book before I realized why I had loved Ms. Carlyle's earlier books. In fact in one of my trips to Chapters, I picked up a book I didn't already have. The books starts with murder; the murder of Grace Gauthier's employer and secret fiance. It doesn't take her long to realize that she needs help as she seems to be top on the suspect list. She looks for an old friend and army officer that served under her Army father. But it seems her friend is out of town and instead she tells her worries to Adrian, Lord Ruthveyan. He's a rather mysterious guy, he and the other members of his club. Still, Grace who has always been a very good judge of men, does trust him and puts her faith and trust in his hands. And Adrian is mysterious. He's one of those tortured soul kind of heroes that are so very delicious. He has an odd talent that leads him to keep his distance from just about everyone. If he touches them or looks into their eyes, he can 'sense' things about them, such as how they will die. This keeps him apart from everyone but those in his club who all have similar kinds of 'gifts'. But for some reason he is unable to 'read' Grace and this is very calming to him. In addition, he is very attracted to her though he fights it, thinking in time, he will get glimpses into what her future holds in store for her and he will once again suffer. He tries his best to resist falling for her. He spent much of his life in India and his mother in fact was an Indian Princess and his father English which makes him a half caste hero. This doesn't really play into the story though except as another way he is separate.Grace also has had an unusual upbringing. Her mother died early and she has spent most of her life following her French Legionnaire officer father. She had come back to England after his death and was just finding a new life when it was torn apart by the death of her employer/fiance. She is also strongly attracted to Adrian, but like him, is determined to resist as she sees no future with him. But as they work together to try and clear her name, they finally are unable to resist each other.I do believe with this book, that Liz Carlyle is back on my list. I enjoyed it. Adrian was a very good tortured and mysterious hero. Grace was a heroine I really appreciated. She was quite practical and pragmatic. Despite being terrified at being a suspect, she is realizes that Adrian is her best hope for clearing her name and she trusts him to do exactly that.

"Oftentimes, he well knew, the worst sort of pain was the silent kind, the kind inflicted not by a slash of an assailant’s knife but by a thousand little cuts made up of thoughtless comments, cold restraint, and condescending eyes."This quote from Liz Carlyle's "One Touch of Scandal" (2010) is why I love reading romances, From the Fraternitas Aureae Crucis, #1, this book has an alpha, tormented hero, a strong (not aggressive) heroine, an excellent plot and paranormal elements. I've only recently discovered Liz Carlyle as an author and am mowing my way through her back list. What a pleasure! This book has everything that makes my heart flutter & I read it as fast as I could. Great entertainment and a great example of the best of the romance genre.
