Passenger to Frankfurt Audiobook Summary

Christie’s superb stand-alone mystery, Passenger to Frankfurt, is a true masterwork of surprise and suspense, as a diplomat comes to the aid of a terrified woman in an airport, only to find that his identity has been stolen and his life is suddenly in serious jeopardy.

Sir Stafford Nye’s flight home from Malaya takes an unprecedented twist when a young woman confides in him that someone is trying to kill her. In a moment of weakness, he agrees to lend her his passport. Unwittingly, the diplomat has put his own life on the line.

When he meets the mystery woman again, she is a different person, and he finds himself drawn into a battle against an invisible–and altogether more dangerous–enemy. . . .

I can't not give this 5 stars. It was definitely one of the most puzzling books I've ever read, but I loved every minute! A riot of fabulous characters, too. (Though that's expected with AC) ;)

First of all, it’s not a mystery. It’s a spy thriller. There’s none of the usual things one would expect from Agatha Christie and I can see why some people hated it. There are loads of outlandish and unlikely scenarios and, for a Christie book, it was pretty predictable. However, I thought it was a great change of pace from a lot of the spy thrillers one finds in bookstores these days. It was fascinating to say the least, even if it was not the exact quality of work most people expect from this author.

Loved it! This was different than her usual books. Will probably be one of my favorites of hers.

I really enjoyed this book. I am not sure why so many people gave this a bad review. I suppose if you are expecting to read a typical Poirot or Miss Marple mystery you will not find it here. It is however her version of a modern spy thriller or James Bond style novel. It also seems to be Christie's version or ideas on the "modern world" post WWII."...it's the new heaven and the new earth. That's what's been promised by leaders for thousands of years. Promised by religions, promised by those who support Messiahs, promised by those who come back to teach the law, like the Buddah. Promised by politicians. The crude heaven of easy attainment...".

Poor, unloved 'Passenger to Frankfurt'. Very few people seem to have a kind word to say about the novel released to coincide with Agatha Christie's eightieth birthday. Even Christie connoisseur Charles Osborne has little time for it, if the essay in his 'The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie' is anything to go by. I approached it with trepidation. After all, quite a number of the criticisms levelled at the 'lesser Christies' have, to my mind, proved justified; 'Postern of Fate', anyone? However, I enjoyed 'Passenger to Frankfurt' enormously. Yes, there are plot elements not fully developed, yes, the novel is overblown and fantastic, yes the conclusion is somewhat unbelievable. I don't care. I think this is one of the most unusual and distinctive Christie novels: a speculative bit of dystopian fiction, verging almost on science fiction at times.Chrsitie voices her concerns about the way she saw the world in 1970. So what? Many critics suggest they are the views of a jaded, elderly, out of touch snob. Are the views of the elderly therefore worthless? Are the older generation not entitled to a view? Ironic, isn't it, that in a so called liberal society people clamour for the voices of the older generation to be ignored? 'Passenger to Frankfurt', although not getting everything about the future correct, does touch on some issues that remain pertinent today. From this point of view, I believe 'Passenger to Frankfurt' should be re-appraised: a clarion call against extremism of any kind. Far from being an old and out of touch fuddy-duddy, rather Agatha Christie in 'Passenger to Frankfurt' hits the nail on the head and produces a piece of speculative fiction that belies its poor reputation.

This is one of the early 70s non murder books. This is rather convoluted and involves some characters that we have met before - the enigmatic Mr Robinson, Colonel Pikeaway - and some new ones. It's quite farfetched and I much prefer her cosy murders. However, it wiles away a rainy afternoon.

I just read Christie's Passenger to Frankfuirt (1970). Most reviewers hated it. Not I. Most reviewers seemed to think Christie is hypothesizing resurgent Nazism as the source of 70's youth unrest. She is not, at least in this book. Here, neo-nazism is one more enthusiasm, along with youth rebellion, sex-drugs-rocknroll. Even the default villains since WWI, international financiers, as well as politicians, career foreign service people--are all being manipulated by a circle of men and women seeking power, drawing on the belief of idealists that one must tear down the existing order, presupposing that with a new society people will be gooood. Rather than continuing to be just human beings.

Amazing read/ Kept me locked. I never knew she has written spy novels too. Its a welcome change to read her books. all that i have read are murder mysteries. but this one, not an easy book. good insights given here on politics and social changes across the world that was happening those years. But believe me there is a mention of PATTERNS here, there is always a pattern that is seen in big changes in the world, also evident in this post 2010 era

I was drawn in after the first chapter, and stayed interested throughout. I did not want to put this book down. Having never read Agatha Christie before, I wasn't expecting anything in particular, but I thought the pacing was good, the characters weird and interesting, and just wanted to find out what they would get themselves into. Also the musical and political allusions kept it interesting and mysterious.
