James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.

James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full-time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast.

It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.

James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time.

James is humbled every day by the success that this groovy blue cat has brought him. He says positively affecting children’s lives is his number one priority, and he is grateful to have such an amazing audience to work for.

Pete the Cat and his friends spend time enjoying surfing and having fun. So they decide to have a sleep over. When it is time to go to bed, Pete the Cat’s friends keep waking up and doing something noisy. Pete the Cat takes out a story book and reads it to his friends. One by one they fall asleep and Pete the Cat could fall asleep in the end. Most of all, illustrations caught my eye when reviewing this book. The illustrations are drawn as if children drew them. Rough coloring and diverse colors create the mood of children’s drawings in art class. Mostly yellow and blue colors of backgrounds provide clues of night and day as well as quiet and excitement. Pertaining to the solutions to let his friends fall asleep, I thought about two effects. First, the solution implies that reading bedtime stories is a common way to make your child falls asleep. Bedtime reading is well-known strategy to create relaxed circumstances to go to bed. At the same time, this reading practice encourages children’s literacy development. Secondly, reading a book in a bed could deliver the message that reading books are not fun but are for sleep. I may exaggerate the potential risks of misinterpretations on reading books, but I believe that some children may think the way I thought when I was a child. Haha…

Fiction Pete, Alligator, Toad and Gus had a ton of fun in the sun! Pete suggested a sleepover to continue the fun times. It seemed that Pete's friends couldn't fall asleep so Pete read his friends a story. The whole gang went right to sleep as they dreamed about more fun tomorrow. When reading this book I imagined myself sitting in front of students telling the story of Pete and his friends during story time. I feel that this story was a good example of friendship and problem solving. Pete and his friends have fun together because everyone treats each other nicely. Even with such good friends, they can be troublesome. I could use this story of Pete and his friends in a classroom by reading it to the whole class and presenting the message of friendship and problem solving. I could also use it to read to a specific group of students who do not seem to be getting along. This book would be appropriate for kindergarten to second grade.

When Pete the cat and his other groovy friends spend a long fun day at the beach, they don't want the fun to stop, so Pete comes up with a super cool plan to have a sleepover with his closest pals, Alligator, Frog, and Gus. But as they all try to fall asleep after their long day, Pete the Cat keeps being awaken by one of his friends. Toad starts clapping, and then Gus starts to play the drums, and then Alligator starts to chomp on some pizza. Pete just wants to sleep, so he has the brilliant idea to read to his friends, and before you know it they are all asleep dreaming of a new day with more fun in the sun! This is a pretty quick read for your class and a great way to introduce those different kinds of vocabulary such as groovy, and Jam and all those sorts of words.

I thought that the illustrations were fun and that they were full of bright colors. I think that the story is a good one for younger kids that are in kindergarten or maybe first grade. I don't know if I would read it to a classroom full of 3rd or 4th graders because it may lack the depth that they require in a book. I enjoyed the rhyming. I also really liked how the letters got bigger and the color of the letters changes to create more of an emphasis on the phrases that needed it. I would recommend this book to parents and teachers because this story is full of vibrant illustrations and a neat story. Overall I thought the story was fun and that it would be a good story to read with younger kids who are just learning to read.

I think this children's book is one of the best! The series of Pete the Cat is always a good one for the children. In this book of the series, I find it interesting for the children. It will keep them wondering what Pete is going to do next to get some sleep. Also, the pictures in the book stand out and do a good job of explaining the words of the book so that the children can understand what is happening. The story also shows the children how to problem solve. This is by Pete strategizing a plan to get his pals to finally go to sleep.

I really enjoy the Pete the Cat series. I think this is one of the best series for children. In this one, I think its a silly and exciting read for the kids. It keeps them wondering what Pete is going to go through next and what he’s going to do to get to sleep. I enjoy the illustrations also, they show the kids what’s happening in the plot and are also children friendly. The book also helps children to learn how to solve a problem.

Pete, the cat, and his friends spend the whole day hanging out at the beach. When they were done surfing Pete suggested a sleepover. Though he could not get any sleep. All of his friends wanted to eat, play drums or clap. This gave him the Bedtime Blues. So he decided to read them a story. the group eventually settled down and fell right asleep.A cute children's book about how important bedtime is and the benefits it brings for the next day coming.

Pete the Cat and his groovy companions make kids happy (though with the childlike illustrations and the difficult-but-there rhythm it may be hard for parents to understand why). This particular adventure will make parents happy because the hero wants to go to sleep at bedtime, and the toads and alligators and whatnot who don't want to go to sleep at bedtime are regarded as ungroovy. Learn to groove well, kids. Go to sleep at bedtime like Pete the Cat.

Love Pete The CatWe have been reading Pete the Car since my son was in Pre-k (he's now 10) we still love reading Pete the cat! He's a cool cat that teaches good behavior, my kids like repeating some of the things Pete says and the author makes you feel included while reading. Our favorite is the one about Pete's Shoes!

This book is about a cat and his friends. They have a sleepover and Pete wants to go to bed, but his friends don't want to. He ends up reading them a book to get them to go to sleep and finally they all settle down and fall asleep. It's a cute book about friendship and would be good for the younger grades.
