"Predator" is an action-packed thriller that continues after the death of Hector Cross's wife , the killing of vicious and ruthless Carl Bannock and the handing over of Johnny Congo an extortionist and multi- murderer to legal justice. Life for Hector returns to normal with his girlfriend Jo Stanley and raising his young daughter Catherine Cayla when Congo escapes the executioner and vows vengeance against him.In a fast-paced, explosive thrill-ride Hector faces a conspiracy to devalue Bannock Oil shares, and acts of terrorism that include the hostage taking on an oil rig near Cabinda and the destruction of the oil supertanker Bannock A which costs multiple lives. As head of security and a director for Bannock Oil even though the oil rig and its crew are saved Hector not only faces the loss of his daughter's fortune, a blot on the reputation of his security firm Cross Bow Security but legal action against him. Tension and suspense continually build throughout the story as he tries to find the psychopath that's trying to destroy Bannock Oil while keeping his daughter safe. In this story Jo Stanley threatened by a promise she had Hector make walks away citing all the darkness, death and violence that's so much a part of his life. Yet she cannot forget him and continues to delve into a scheme that will devalue Bannock Oil and make billions for the conspirators in collusion with Congo. Hurt by her rejection Hector quickly moves on and becomes smitten with young, sexy Zhenia Voronova. In a action-packed story that's gripping from start to finish it's the love interests and portrayal of the female characters that bring it down. The woman are not believable; either loose and sexy or tough and sexy, no in-between except perhaps cowardly, rule-oriented Jo Stanley who walks away from Hector because she wanted legal justice rather than blood on his hands. Even though Hector is entranced by a smart, attractive crime profiler closer to his age he easily succumbs to a relationship with the young, flighty and loose Zhenia, sister of tough, no-nonsense warrior Nasiya O'Quinn ironically believing he'll finally have an ideal family life.Although the woman aren't realistic the characters do infuse the story with intensity, excitement and drama. Major Hector Cross the private security consultant and ex-SAS who plays by his own rules, is headstrong and proud but is also a tender-hearted father with his daughter. Included in his security team is the quick-witted, tough and hot-tempered Paddy O'Quinn; his wife the clever and skilled warrior Nasiya; and the brains behind the brawn Dave Imbliss. Yet it's the depraved, heartlessness, and brooding vengeance of Johnny Congo (aka King John Kikuu Tembo) and the sophisticated charm of the greedy, cynical and ruthless Mateus da Cunha that add a dangerous chill to the story.Basically I liked the action thriller "Predator" as Hector Cross hunts a depraved killer who unleashes a deadly conspiracy and intend to read other series by the Wilbur Smith.

A bit disappointed because I was expecting historical fiction. A good, fast paced, entertaining soldier of fortune adventure story. This was my first Crossbow novel and I found it enjoyable. I will search for another in the series. This book seemed to flounder a bit in the ending I found the ending to be a bit disappointing as it did not match the build-up.

** spoiler alert ** ebook library (A reminder)Bannock oil has two high risk concessions one north of Canada in ice waters and the other off the coast of Angolia. Angolia is not the problem but rather a province of Angolia that has elements of wanting independence. So the young man, privileged, ruthless french born of a mixed marriage with ties to the province is agitating for independence. He is giving press releases and seeking support and finance pretending to care for the people all the time wanting power and wealth. He is approached and financed by billionaire ruthless killer Johnny Congo who arranged his own escape by a militry styled ambush in Texas on route to his execution site. Cross at his girlfriend's insistence had passed him back to the State of Texas where he was wanted rather than killing him (A pity hundreds of lives andlivelihoods would of been saved).Major Hector Cross, formidable fighter, ex-SAS warrior and security consultant now part of Bannock Oil is charged with protecting the drilling rig and a special floating platform that refines the oil. The special ice platform in the North is destroyed by a natural disaster of a storm. This brings a derivatives trader and manipulator on the scence with opportunist dribble to force the share price on a downward spiral. Congo dupes the trader in by threats and promises including his lawyer Weiss plus a friend of his dead partner a a lawyer who facitated the eacape. They partly willingly became co conspirators. Major Hector Cross has survived explosive tangles with depraved enemies-warlords, pirates, and arms dealers-from the Middle East to the heart of Africa. Now, Cross must take the law into his own hands once again to stop a vengeful old enemy who has resurfaced - and hunt down a deadly new nemesis who is in pursuit of global domination.

I’ve not read Smith’s previous Hector Cross novels, so it is possible that I was a bit of a disadvantage reading this, given the clear complexity of the characters’ backgrounds where they have crossed paths more than once. Fortunately the history is fairly well explained in around the first 10% of the book, though it does come across a little as being sort of shoehorned in to set the scene so the story can leap forward.I’m not sure how much of the book was Wilbur Smith and how much Tom Cain (who I’ve not read) but to me the prose felt slightly different from Smith’s usual form – though not in a bad way. Just different. The plot moves forward apace at all times and rarely lags at all, which is good with this sort of thriller. One seeks immediacy and excitement, after all. From the initial jailbreak – not a spoiler really, since it’s at the start – through the whole text, there’s a rousing quality to the book and a fairly cinematic feel. The characters are, in fairness, a little 2-dimensional for me. The hero is just a little bit too heroic and powerful, the bad guy is lifted straight from a scene where he should be torturing James Bond, etc. Mind you, with thrillers, strong character archetypes help drive the plot, and it might be that a little more greyness and depth of character could have slowed the tale. The storytelling itself flip-flops a little between cliched soap-opera and excellent in-your-face phrasing. The result is not jarring, though, and for me the moments of sheer genius prose more than made up for the more eye-rolling moments.Overall? For me this is not a genre-defining novel, and don’t expect great literary fayre. But if what you’re looking for is a few hours of fun excitement with solidly-written action scenes and villains you can boo at, then you can do a lot worse than Predator.

when I fist got this book to review I thought this is not my kind of book but I would review it any ways I learned you never judge a book by its cover. Hector cross lost his wife hazel when she was killed by carl bannock and johnny congo.hazels family owned bannock oil.hector found them and fed carl bannock to the crocodlies, his girlfriend ji Stanley told him to let the courts deal with congo.while on death row on his way to be executed he escaped again having hector to find him and deal with him for good but congo was going after hector for killing bannock...this has a lot of action and thinks you don't see coming..as very good book to read even if you think its not your normal reading..very well written....

Extremely well written, well researched and action packed. I've not read Wilbur Smith before, however, after reading this I think I may search more of his work in future. The 3rd book in a series I haven't read from the beginning would usually be enough to put me off, but I found myself immersed in this pretty easily. I felt genuine feelings towards characters and situations, and struggled a bit at the end as it does get fairly intense -but I couldn't put it down.Definitely worth a read if you like thrillers.I won this book on goodreads giveaways, and for the privilege I'm giving it an honest review.

This is a Goodreads win review. This book is about a former operative facing off against his many lethal enemies in the Middle East and Africa. This is a tight plot about taking down a person who wants world dominence. I read it in one sitting, it is very action packed.

Third book in the series and Hector Cross at his best again. This book picked up from where it ended in the second one about the hunt of Congo. Hector came close but still was very far from killing the so called beast. To add to the woes of Hector Cross life oil company had a great downfall which made him more determined and focused on hunting of the beast as he knew who was behind all the planning and plotting. Ending is bit on the sadder side with death of a character but the book showed a really great tactical side of Hector Cross.Loved the series not sure if there will be any more Hector's series coming up still would like to read more on Hector saving the day.Overall I would say this one was better than the first 2 novels.
