A fun listen with distinctive voices and amusing nods to popular culture. Great for in the car. Musical numbers not deep but definitely could see how this would be a great musical for a kids’ production.

Having read “Puss in Boots” and thus being acquainted with the story, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this musical audiobook was not just a simple adaptation of the fairy tale with music, but a slight modernization and reinterpretation of it. Naturally, all we expect of Puss in Boots is there – a dying father gifts his youngest son with a talking cat and a single farthing to make his way, and thanks to Puss’ ingenuity and resourcefulness, the son ends up rich, with a castle, and marrying the princess – but there are a number of fun surprises along the way. There are nods to modern terms and people, such as the Court of Food and the people (hipsters) of Hipsteria, but also modern ideas which flow seamlessly into the story. The most evident one is perhaps how Princess Penelope wants a say in whom she marries, and learns from her mother that despite it being a man’s world, women have power too. The various songs and repeated choruses (“where there’s a will there’s a way”, “tattletale”, “chop, saw” among others) are catchy and uplifting and really just pure fun. I thought I’d be listening to this book across a day or two, but instead I modified my day’s plans to accommodate listening to the book with only the briefest of pauses to change activities while I listened. This audiobook musical is also good for children, over several sittings depending on their attention span, as it has the organic messages of Puss in Boots plus modern ones and the whole presented in a fun, catchy way. Adults, parents or no, will enjoy the classic tale in a new way with its musical numbers and atmosphere-creating sound effects, while laughing aloud for the little additions here and there of modern relevance. I received a free audiobook copy through a drawing sponsored by the publisher. This has not affected my rating or review of the book.

An audiobook adaptation of a musical. Jim Dale does a wondrous job as the narrator and the plot and story are silly enough for little ones to enjoy but complex enough for older children and adults could gain additional humor from puns. Less than 3 hours and perfect for a short road trip.
