this was a re-read for me. my original review can be found here: goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...youtube: https://youtu.be/kKQ5jusa8fo After re-reading this, I stand by my original 4 star rating and my overall enjoyment of this book. I want to make it clear that I know this book does not have the most original concept and it also uses a lot of tropes, but I still had such a fun time reading it. I love the characters and the shock factor and the world. I can't wait to give Glass Sword a go and see where Victoria Aveyard takes this story.

This was fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed this crazy adventure of a book. I will say though that it did take a bit of time for me to really get into this book. I also felt the world is still a bit underdeveloped for my liking, but I'm hoping that I gain a better understanding for everything in the sequel. Other than that such an exciting read, full of twists and turns that will leave you flailing all over the place! HECK I'M STILL FLAILING.

YAAAAAASSSS VICTORIA YAAAAAASSSSSS. It's like an X-Men dystopia stuck in a high fantasy world on crack.Look, guys, don't worry about the love triangle. Actually, calling it a love triangle is very spoilerish and I wish I could further calm your feels, but alas, you must read it for yourself. Immensely loved this with very minor reservations and I can't wait for book 2! Full review to come!

3.5, over hyped but entertaining enough.

Intense, dark, and rifled with so many betrayals and counter-betrayals that I lost count. The characters are complex and morally gray, each battling their own conflicting interests. Their journeys show the multifaceted sides to a war and how the line between those two sides often blur. No, the story isn't anything original, and yes, it has all the standard fantasy tropes that would make it generic - but this is a personal 5 for me, just because it made me gasp several times and mutter "damn" under my breath as I stayed up late to blaze through all the chapters.

have i already read countless variations of this plot in other books? you betcha. does that mean i enjoyed this any less? no way, josé! call me predictable (just like this book), but i guess i have a type and its YA dystopian series with a touch of fantasy. ↠ 4 stars

A lot of people were mentioning that this was like a lot of different dystopian books and while I agree, I still think this is worth the read.I enjoyed the world, the magic system... even with the romantic bits.I definitely saw parts of the ending coming but it was still entertaining! Will be continuing the series!

No sé qué decir.

Red Queen (Red Queen #1), Victoria AveyardRed Queen is a young adult fantasy novel written by American writer Victoria Aveyard. It was her first series and her first novel. It was published in February 2015. Its sequels are Glass Sword, King's Cage and War Storm. Mare Barrow is a Red living with her parents and a younger sister, Gisa. Her three older brothers, Bree, Tramy, and Shade, serve in the front line of a war fought between the northern Kingdom the Lakelands and the Barrow's homeland, the Kingdom of Norta. Norta is currently ruled by King Tiberius Calore VI, one of many Silvers with supernatural powers that allow him and the rest of the Silvers, to rule over the more numerous but powerless Reds. Mare is jealous of her sister because of her job and because she has this job means no conscription. When she learns that Kilorn Warren, her best friend, will be conscripted, she plans an escape and meets with a colleague who directs her to Farley, a captain of the Scarlet Guard, insurgents composed of Reds who want to bring equality between their people and the Silvers. Farley demands a sum of money in exchange for Kilorn's escape. A plan to steal from a Silver with Gisa goes horribly wrong when a massacre occurs after the Scarlet Guard bombed the kingdom and Gisa's hand is shot and broken in the chaos, forcing Gisa to stop supporting her family and thus stopped her dream of being a seamstress. During her attempt to steal at a tavern, Mare meets with Cal, a handsome teen who listens to her problems and takes her home while also giving her money. The next day, Mare is taken to the king's local residence and given a job as a servant and realizes that Cal is Tiberias Calore VI's son, Prince Tiberias Calore VII, who wants to protect her from conscription. During the Queenstrial, where Silver nobility compete for Cal's hand, Mare displays electrokinetic powers against Cal's eventual bride, Evangeline Samos. She is captured, but because the king fears of an uprising should a Red be discovered to have supernatural powers, Mare is made a bride of Tiberias' second son, the shy Maven, given the name Mareena Titanos, and a cover story: the daughter of a Silver general who died on the battle field and was adopted by the Reds in the war zone. Mare soon develops mutual feelings for Cal, her betrothed's brother and the future Silver king. She becomes increasingly guilty as the book progresses as she finds herself falling in love with Maven. ...

4/5 stars. This little review contains a little spoiler.I loved Victoria's writing. The plot is really nice. I loved the idea that there's no I-would-die-for-you-even-tho-I-just-met-you love. I really like Mare. She is a reliable character. She’s strong and yet she can be scared and make mistakes. I was really sad when I realised Maven's real face, I really liked him tho. And I hope Cal will catch my heart in the next book because I didn't felt anything for him yet.

The song is Traitor by Olivia Rodrigo. I didn't had to change the lyrics much because the lyrics felt perfect for you know who's betrayal. It is from Mare's pov.🚫SPOILER ALERT🚫(view spoiler)[ Blue not so guilty eyes and little white liesYou made me play dumb but I never knewThat you schemed with her, made my life even worseI kept quiet 'cause I believed in youAnd ain't it funnyHow you ran to herThe second that I thought you were mine? And ain't it funnyHow you said we were more than friends? Now it sure as hell don't look like itYou betrayed meAnd I know that you'll feel sorryFor the way you hurt me, yeahYou schemed with herWhen I thought we were togetherLoved you at my worstBut that didn't matterIt took you two secondsTo go off and betray your brotherGuess you didn't cheatBut you're still a traitorShe brought me aroundJust to shut me downShow me off like I'm a new trophyAnd I know if you were trueThere's no damn way that youCould fall in love with somebody that quicklyAin't it funnyAll the twisted gamesAll the questions you used to avoid?Ain't it funny?Remember I brought her upAnd you told me I was paranoidYou betrayed meAnd I know that you'll feel sorryFor the way you hurt me, yeahYou schemed with herWhen I thought we were togetherLoved you at my worstBut that didn't matterIt took you two secondsTo go off and betray your brotherGuess you didn't cheatBut you're still a traitorGod, I wish that you had thought this throughBefore I went and fell in love with youWhen she's sleeping sound and I'm lying awakeDon't you dare forget about the wayYou betrayed me'Cause I know that you'll feel sorryFor the way you hurt me, yeahYou schemed with herWhen I thought we were togetherLoved you at my worstBut that didn't matterIt took you two secondsTo go off and betray your brotherGuess you didn't cheatBut you're still a traitorYou're still a traitorYeah, you're still a traitorGod, I wish that you had thought this throughBefore I went and fell in love with you (hide spoiler)]__________________________“Many things led to this day, for all of us. A forgotten son, a vengeful mother, a brother with a long shadow, a strange mutation. Together, they've written a tragedy.”Red Queen follows the story of a girl, Mare Barrow, who lives in a world where the society is divided into two categories: the Reds i.e. people having red blood and the Silvers, i.e. people having silver blood. The silvers dominates the reds. The reds live in a very bad condition and everyone above the age 18 has to be conscripted into the army if they don't get some other job before turning 18. So when Kilorn, Mare's best friend loses his job because of the death of his employer, Mare decides to rather run away with him than stay at home and wait for them to be sent to fight a war. In her desperate attempt to save their lives , Mare does things which are dangerous and life changing. When she tries to steal from someone who turns out to be the prince of Norta, the kingdom where she lives in, everything in her life is about to change. “In the fairy tales, the poor girl smiles when she becomes a princess. Right now, I don't know if I'll ever smile again.”The thing I love about this book is that the main character makes mistakes which aren't stupid. It wasn't her fault that the one she trusted the most was the one to betray her. Like everything they had planned went wrong and there were no miracles which happens in every other book I read (and I love those books but still..).“Many things led to this day, for all of us. A forgotten son, a vengeful mother, a brother with a long shadow, a strange mutation. Together, they've written a tragedy.”Let's talk about Mare. Before going to the palace, Mare's daily source of income was stealing, but she stole not for herself but for her family. After her talent's been discovered, Mare is forced to take a new identity and tell lies to everyone which is a very shitty thing to do. Like she is engaged to someone she didn't even know. Her every step is controlled by the queen whom I fucking hate. Whatever she did to her son was fucking crazy. I hate her. I fucking hate her.Let's talk about how I felt about other characters.Do I hate Maven? No. I rather pity him than hate him.Do I love Cal? Nah. He was boring. Like I know he was born to be the king and bla bla bla but still..Do I hate Evangeline? No. Read the rest of the series to find out why.Do I like Kilorn? Yes. He was a better friend if we compare Mare and Kilorn's friendship with Clary and Simon( from the Mortal Instruments).Do I hate Elara? Abso-fucking-lutely yes.

“In the stories, the old fairy tales, a hero comes. But all my heroes are gone or dead. No one is coming for me.” Wow, wow, wow. This book, guys. THIS BOOK. From start to finish, it traps you in and doesn't let go. If I were to pitch it, I'd say it's a successful and addictive combination between The Grisha Trilogy, The Selection, Shatter Me and something entirely unique. Dystopian and fantasy alike, Red Queen will have you at the edge of your seat, questioning every character and falling in love with some of them at the same time. Prepare yourself for sheer awesomeness, because this book definitely delivers. “In school, we learned about the world before ours, about the angels and gods that lived in the sky, ruling the earth with kind and loving hands. Some say those are just stories, but I don’t believe that. The gods rule us still. They have come down from the stars. And they are no longer kind.” Victoria Aveyard created in Red Queen a beautiful, scary and unjust world. If you're a Silver, then you are born with supernatural abilities that entitle you to riches, education and power. They are the ultimate superiors. Reds are normal human beings, treated by Silvers as the dirt on their shoes and forced to fight their wars so they can live long, happy lives without moving a finger. But in between these strictly drawn lines that divide the powerful from the weak, a Red girl stumbles into the society of Silvers only to discover that she's just as special as them. And this is where the politics, a game of hide-and-seek, acting and plotting start. Our main character, Mare Barrow, is forced to keep up the illusion of being a Silver in order to hide the impossibility of a gifted Red. But she's far from perfect. It was so easy to hate her sometimes, because she was naive, judgmental and down-right hypocrite. She's wild and indecisive and yet she still manages to learn from her mistakes. But what captivated me most about Mare was her inner strength to keep up the charade in order to save her own skin only to have it risked in a matter of seconds for a good and ultimate cause: destroying the system and making Reds and Silvers equal. This is when I realized just how selfless and ambitious she is and when my endless cheering for her badass demeanor actually started. “Part of me wishes I could submit to chains, to captivity and silence. But I have lived that life already, in the mud, in the shadows, in a cell, in a silk dress. I will never submit again. I will never stop fighting.” Let's talk boys, cause that's the icing on the cake and everybody loves cake and icing and boys and -- where was I? Oh yes, BOYS. Mare is betrothed to Prince Maven, but Crown Prince Cal tugs at her heartstrings like no other, even if she doesn't let herself admit it. Cal himself is engaged so you can see why this whole situation might be a bit, um, intricate. “He does not like to lose. And”—he lowers his voice, now so close to me I can see the tiny flecks of silver in his eyes—“neither do I. I won’t lose you, Mare. I won’t.” Maven will surprise you with his determination to achieve his goals and to get out of his brother's shadow. He's smart, patient and wickedly cute. I admired him and pitied him at the same time. But, unfortunately, he's no Cal. I don't know what made me love Cal so much from the start, but you could see he's compassionate and just, loyal and selfless. Not to mention pretty hot, protective, brave, clever and funny. Be still, my heart. Now on the love triangle that is not actually a love triangle. Why? Well, how can I put it? You never know for sure that the boys actually love Mare. And half the time, one might think that she doesn't give a damn about them as well. Then it starts getting even more complicated. Because they use each other, because they betray each other and because they are lying to themselves. It's all a vicious circle that no one leaves unscathed or with their feelings clear. A love and hate storm where everyone switches their sides and lives with a treacherous heart. My dark soul was so so happy with this. “Romance. We flinch at the word. There is no such thing between us anymore. Not after what we did to each other, and what was done to us. No matter how much we might want there to be.” The secondary characters were wonderfully nuanced. Julian and Lucas were just great and a true evidence that not all Silvers aren't as stuck-up and arrogant. Kilorn infuriated me indirectly because Mare was getting herself into stuff she couldn't handle just so she could save him. The rest of Mare's family was actually awesome and Walsh, Farley and the rest of the Scarlet Guard have my unwavering respect. There's also the King -- I wasn't really his fan -- and Queen Elara that reminded me of Levana from The Lunar Chronicles (or maybe even Cersei from Game of Thrones). Both have astounding mind-controlling powers, both are wicked, selfish and double-faced vipers and both are easy to hate. As is Evangeline, evil incarnate and the devil's mistress. Another aspect I completely loved about this book was how the author successfully managed to combine fantasy and dystopia to create a unique world. Although it's just the first in the series, Red Queen introduces us to tons of characters, some good, others mostly bad. And the plot is amazingly well planned, mixing politics with the world-building to ensure that readers won't know what hit them until the very end. The dynamics, the conspiracies, the confusing theories -- spectacular course of action, Miss Aveyard. “I told you to hide your heart once. You should have listened.” The beauty of Red Queen is that it doesn't shy away from showing the ugliness of a heart's desire and the betrayals that might entail. The characters are flawed in a beautiful, realistic way and it makes you care for them even if seconds ago you loathed them. There's no black and white in here. There's only instinct, hope, illusion and the inevitable betrayal. “This world is Silver, but it is also gray. There is no black-and-white.” There was a big twist that I actually anticipated, but didn't know how many chances it has to actually develop. So when the time came, it was gut-wrenching and still surprising to see it unfold. It finally put things into perspective about who's the real enemy, because until then you don't really know who the baddies are and who is your ally. “The Guard won’t stop,” I say softly, but I know he’s barely listening anymore. “And while they are certainly to blame, you are as well. There is blood on your hands, Prince.” And Maven’s. And mine.” The last chapters or so had me devouring page after page. I'm telling you, there are so many things happening that you can't keep up. The amount of FEELS you'll experience for some of the characters will leave you breathless. Sadness? Oh yeah. Pity? Loads of it. Anger? Heck, yes! Pride? Definitely. Now just give me the sequel so I won't die of anticipation and we're all good. Red Queen will be a definite favorite among readers when it releases next year. It's a thrilling, unputdownable book emblazoned with forbidden romance, paralyzing action and an intriguing game of life or death. Hearts get crushed, loyalties are tested and a new beginning is set in motion. Rise, red as the dawn, and go read it when it releases. You won't be disappointed. “Many things led to this day, for all of us. A forgotten son, a vengeful mother, a brother with a long shadow, a strange mutation. Together, they’ve written a tragedy.” ENJOY!

While, yes, there are so many over used plot lines in this... I'd describe it as Red Rising meets The Selection, but it was still so much fun! I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator was fantastic. It's not one of those sci-fi fantasies that needs all you attention. The romance was perfect, the betrayal was so satisfying and stinging, it's a really fun ride! I immediately downloaded the second audiobook.

5 Power is a Dangerous Game ★'s “The gods rule us still. They have come down from the stars. And they are no longer kind.”“The truth is what I make it. I could set this world on fire and call it rain.”I love this book! 'Red Queen' dew me right in and kept my undivided attention :) I really enjoyed the plot, the writing style was beautifully done, the world was entertaining and the characters were so likable, well most of them anyways lol. Though I'll admit Red Queen isn't very original by any means, I still fell in love with it. Let's just say, it is one of my guilty pleasures! It has all the stuff that keeps my interests like it has princes, castles, love and betrayal, corruption and politics, evil queens, adventure and of course a fascinating world, but also magical powers. I have a real weakness for magic, magic is everything I love! The pacing was dead on, it didn't drag out and it didn't skip over all the important parts. There were tons of twists and turns and a lot of action! Silvers have powers. Reds don’t! That is until Mare Barrow the heroine of course. Mare is awesome! She is a poor red girl from the stilts. The world has been beating her people down and oppressing them for a long, long time. She is very brave and loyal to her family and friends, she'll do whatever is necessary to protect them. Mare is also sarcastic which is hilarious, I love all her snarky comebacks. As for the brother's Cal and Maven, I love love love love love Cal! Besides Maven is freaking crazy! There's a lot of people out there, that's not a fan of this series but I really don't a shit! Haha! Because I for one, love it! If you haven't read this yet, you should really check it out.#teamCal Forever!!“His lips are on mine, hard and warm and pressing. The touch is electrifying, but not like I'm used to. This isn't a spark of destruction, but a spark of life. As much as I want to pull away, I just can't do it. Cal is a cliff and I throw myself over the edge, not bothering to think of what it could do to us both. One day he'll realize I'm his enemy, and all this will be a far-gone memory. But not yet.”
