I'm decidedly in character love with Riff Raff the Mouse Pirate and now he and his crew are off on a treasure adventure again this time seeking out their lost cheese that might have ended up on the dreaded Cat Island! Here is a good usage of rhymes and child adventure. This level 2 early reader is just the right amount of challenge with a great deal of interest for its kiddo readers. I'm excitedly hoping for more Riff Raff adventures. Thanks to HC. Paperback 6x9" I received this product free for the purpose of reviewing it. I received no other compensation for this review. Riff Raff Sails the High Cheese is a book for transitional readers possibly in 1st or 2nd grade. This book is about Captain Riff Raff and his crew on a quest to find their missing cheese. Munster, Blue, Cheddar, Swiss, Colby, and the others ask their friend Ali the gator, and she says it is somewhere that rhymes with "hat". They ask their friends in the bat cave, under a mat, and even some rats and find out none of them stole their block of cheese. Their only option is to go to Cat Island. This book was rich in rhyming and creative techniques, like naming all the mice after different types of cheese. Both techniques allow children to not only better their reading skills, but understand different other elements not related to reading. They can also make connections to the real world through these techniques. The only thing I noticed for me that was more difficult to read the story with a natural flow was the use of dialogue. I found myself continuously saying, "they said" or "he said" instead of having a sentence here and there to tell the story. However, that element does have the ability to get readers to put emotion into their reading and be more interactive with the story. I enjoyed this book and found myself chuckling at some of their sayings and amazed at the creativity. I am so excited to have my students learn to read by using this book along with many others!
