Santa’s Husband Audiobook Summary

Offering a fresh twist on Kris Kringle, a clever yet heartfelt audiobook that tells the story of a black Santa, his white husband, and their life in the North Pole.

Everyone knows that Santa Claus is jolly, but in Santa’s Husband, this cherished symbol of the holiday season is also black and gay, and married to an equally cheery man.

In this witty and sweet illustrated Christmas tale, humor writer Daniel Kibblesmith introduces us to Mr. and Mr. Claus, and gives us a glimpse of their lives together. We see the Clauses sitting by the fire at their cozy North Pole home, vacationing at the beach, having an occasional disagreement, celebrating their wedding day, and comforting each other when some loudmouth people on television angrily dispute Santa’s appearance and lifestyle.

In the weeks before Christmas, Santa’s husband helps with all the pre-Christmas work, from double-checking lists, to feeding the reindeer (organic gluten-free grains, of course), to negotiating labor disputes with the restive workshop elves. At the height of toy-making season, he even fills in for his busy hubby at the mall to ensure every child can meet the Big Guy in the red suit, and give him their wish list.

As this charming audiobook reminds us, Santa Claus can come in all shapes and colors and sizes–just like the children and families he visits all over the world each Christmas eve.

Santa’s Husband is a delightful gift for listeners of all ages.

This book was fun to read. This is a book at my brother's house and so I read it to the nephew before bed one night. I love that Santa has a husband and they work together. Still, even I felt like this book was pushing an agenda. Still, what fun to have a black Santa Claus and his husband. I do wish it was more of a story, but still, it's fun. Some friends sent this book as a gift to my brother. Good friends there.

Santa's Husband, like so many things, began as a Twitter joke, but now it is a wonderful real thing: a children's book describing the life of black Santa Claus and his white husband. For the first half of the book, Daniel Kibblesmith simply tells it like it is, and I must admit, I had to fight a lot of cognitive dissonance. Reading about and seeing a black Santa and his white husband went against everything I knew about Santa Claus in every single depiction of this mythical figure I was aware of. But here is an opposing perspective, another depiction to insinuate itself into your mind. Kibblesmith addresses the issue head-on in the second half, making this is a very meta book that comments on the criticism of its own existence. It never succumbs to being an "ironic" children's book that's there to entertain adults; it functions beautifully as an actual children's book with a strong message that kids should hear, especially before they've had too many years of indoctrination with a heterosexual white Santa Claus. A.P. Quach's delightful illustrations made me smile throughout, brimming with color and cuteness. While many pages simply show one or both of the Clauses engaging in domestic life, the art really shines in the double-page spreads with multiple figures and some nice visual storytelling. 2017 has been largely terrible, but the existence of Santa's Husband is a bright spot to ring in the Christmas season.

What a total delight this book was. The illustrations by A.P. Quach are sweet and clever as anything as you'll ever see in any Christmas book, and Daniel Kibblesmith infuses this work with the perfect blend of humor and kindness. I was surprised to see some people claiming that this adorable children's book is "rewriting history" as Santa is a fictional character. And, I'm going out on a limb here, but many people think that Santa might just be your parents or people who take care of you, who can come in many, amny different forms. It's an addition to the Christmas season that I hope will find it's place alongside the Elf of the Shelf, Rudolph, and other recent contributions to Christmas lore.
