Second Time Sweeter audiobook

Second Time Sweeter by Beverly Jenkins is a 2018 William Morrow publication. I added this book on a whim because I was so surprised to see a contemporary novel written by Beverly Jenkins, an author, who for me, has always been associated with historical romance novels. Apparently, this book is a part of an ongoing series I knew absolutely nothing about. I didn’t intend to start reading another series- I know, you’ve heard that a million times- much less start in on the ninth book. I don’t have time to binge read the previous eight installments, so I just took a leap and dived in, hoping for the best. The story appears to be centered around Bernadine Brown, the owner of the small Kansas town of Henry Adams. As the story begins, we learn that Bernadine is broken hearted after the man she was dating, Malachi July, pulled a terrible stunt, putting everything he had worked so hard to achieve at risk. If that weren’t bad enough, Mal, knowing he has disappointed so many people and hurt Bernadine terribly, is behaving almost as if HE is the injured party. Meanwhile, store owner, and single father, Gary Clark is hoping to reconnect with the woman he was forced to give up years ago, but never really got over. However, his ex-wife has other plans… As the title suggests this is a story about second chances and forgiveness, which is the kind of story I’m always a sucker for. I loved Gary’s daughters and the solid family life he provided for them. I was rooting for him, hoping he would finally have a chance to regain what he lost. While the story with Mal seemed more front and center, I confess I was a little flummoxed by his behavior, and his motives were a little weak. It took me a long time to warm up to him. I was hoping for more of a grand gesture from him, however, since this is an ongoing series, maybe Mal will get his chance to impress Bernadine in more sincere and thoughtful ways- Maybe with things money can’t buy, perhaps. Although, I couldn’t shake the feeling I was missing out on some pertinent backstory with a few of these characters, I thought this was a super sweet story. I definitely want to keep up with the Henry Adams gang in the future, and hope to add a few of the previous chapters in the series into my reading schedule so I can get caught up to speed.4 stars

Second Time Sweeter by Beverly JenkinsBlessings book 9. Contemporary small-town romance. Best read as part of the series but can be read as a stand-alone romance. Malachi is from a generation that expects the man to pay for things and support the family. Clouded by the desire to be the provider, he makes a bad decision and ends up losing the money he borrowed illegally. Because of that he’s lost the love of his life and the town is angry. This story is Mal not really understanding the depth of pain he’s caused others. As he begins to work out his anger and that of his friends and family and townspeople, a detective is hired to try to get some of the funds back. Meanwhile Gary gets a second chance with his high school sweetheart. It took me quite a while to like Mal. He just didn’t seem to realize that people will never trust him again. And though her was working to pay back the town, he expected everything to be fine. I did like his work ethic. And without spoilers, he does redeem himself. The two girls in the story impressed me the most with their adult attitudes about their absent mother.

3-1/2 stars, which is not lukewarm -- I really enjoyed thisI can't really write a summary for this, because it's a continuation of a long series of books following the same characters in the same town. I read the book immediately previous to this and liked it a lot, but despite my best intentions, I haven't gotten around to reading the whole series yet. But when I saw this latest one on my library's New shelf, I grabbed it -- might as well keep going. The magic of these books is that they are both an on-going series, AND also written in such a way that each one stands alone just fine. I really admire how the author clearly loves all of her characters, so she is empathetic and gentle with them even as some of them do very wrong by each other, but she also cuts them no slack -- they have to face up to and own whatever they've done, and take responsibility for themselves. And when they do, it's crazy heartwarming. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series, whether they're earlier in it, or coming along later.

Ms. Brown moved in and provided much-needed upgrades for the town (such as paving the road, improving infrastructures, providing town-wide WiFi services, building homes, providing a school and recreation center, and more). Now, this once dying town is thriving as are its residents, old and new. Ms. Brown also brought in new families to foster children and all of those children have subsequently been adopted. Along with the town's council, she's overseen the influx of new residents and restored old historic businesses. The one thing she couldn't control was how Malachi "Mal" July would feel when she was paying all of the bills when they went on vacation. Mal felt like a gigolo and, along with his best friend Clay, decided on a get-rich-quick scheme that quickly fell apart. Clay had the money for the "investment", but Mal embezzled the monies from the diner he is co-owner of, The Dog and Cow (it's a long story). Adding insult to injury, when the embezzlement was discovered, this 60-something-year-old man ran away only to return for his goddaughter's wedding with another woman in tow. Talk about a double slap in the face for Bernadine. Now Mal is back and providing a feeble apology at best. Is it possible for him to make financial restitution to the town and regain some semblance of trust from his friends and family? Will Bernadine ever be able to trust him again?While all of the Mal July drama is going on, Lily July (Mal's daughter-in-law), has been busy planning the former Henry Adams high school reunion weekend. Lily is a great planner, but even she can't plan for the crazy behavior of Gary Clark's ex-wife. This woman didn't want her daughters when she divorced Gary a few years ago, moved to Atlanta and remarried. Now that she's getting a divorce from husband number two, she's decided that she's lonely and wants custody of the girls. It's bad enough she lied about being pregnant and trapped Gary into marriage all those years ago, but now she's trying to ruin their daughter's lives as well as all possibilities for Gary's second chance at love with his high school sweetheart. Will she be able to derail her girl's lives and Gary's chance to reconnect with the love of his life?Needless to say, there's a lot more drama and intrigue going on in Henry Adams then I've mentioned, but to find out more you'll need to read Second Time Sweeter by Beverly Jenkins for yourself. I always enjoy returning to Henry Adams and feel as if I'm revisiting old friends. This town is more about the family you make as much as it is about the family you're born into. There's this greater sense of community that used to be prevalent in small communities. It's also nice to see a character such as Bernadine Brown putting her money to such great use by helping the town of Henry Adams and others. (Yes, I know it's a fictional town, but I still think it's nice.) This little town has grown so much since the first book, Bring On The Blessings, and I'm not talking land wise. The town population has expanded. It now has a grocery store, a swimming pool, a hair salon/barber shop, a coffee shop, a medical office, a recording studio, and a fire department with plans for an upscale restaurant and a bed-and-breakfast along with more housing. Obviously, there's a lot more going on in Second Time Sweeter than Mal trying to repay his debt and atone for his sins and Gary possibly finding love with his high school sweetheart, but if I told you more you wouldn't need to read the book. I enjoyed the characters, their interactions, the action, the drama (and there's a lot of drama), and the setting of Henry Adams. If you've read the previous books in The Blessings series, I won't have to tell you to grab a copy of Second Time Sweeter to read. You probably already have it on your TBR list and have pre-ordered your copy. For those of you that haven't read any of the books in The Blessings series, set aside a few evenings or weekends and begin with Bring On The Blessings and read through to Second Time Sweeter. I'm so hooked on this series that I reread it from the very first book to the latest book with each addition to the series. (Yes, I enjoy this series just that much!) This was my first read from this author. I give this book a 4 out of 5 Star review. IMO, this novel started off rather slow. I was leaning on a 3 out of 5 Star review in the beginning, but as the plot developed, I changed the 3 to a 4. I must admit that the story flowed smoother as the storyline developed. There was a lot going on in the beginning, which required me to get focused to read it. The novel ended up being rather good. The novel is about the happenings of a small town…small town living with some big city action going on. There are several characters that play a key role in this novel from start to finish. The story deals with a close-knit town/community where no secrets are kept. Everyone knows everyone and if you make a mistake everyone will know about it. The story has a plot that shows an example of how people that live a town where everyone knows each other and cares about one another can unite against threats to their community whether it’s a threat from one of their own or one that comes from the outside. The story deals with matters of the heart, which includes how love will often lead you to forgive and give second chances. The title definitely speaks to this. The story also deals with how pride can do more harm than good and that sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to get you to admit wrong and amend for the mistakes you make. Issues also addressed in this novel include the importance of good communication in relationships no matter the type; and children at times can make more sense of matters than adults at times. No good story comes without some drama in it. The drama in this story is centered around two criminal acts, which shows the resiliency of the community to lean on one another. The author did a great job pulling together a storyline that deals with drama (some of it very violent in nature), what it means to come together as a community, the resiliency of children, and what it means to love and show love. I do recommend this novel.

Riveting Going to Henry Adams, Kansas is like visiting your family every summer, it's the one place you can't wait to get to and that one place you don't want to leave. There were quite a few ups and downs on this visit. Maybe a budding New relationship between my Amari and Tiffany, and as the title states Second Time Sweeter, with Gary and Nori. We even had an attempted murder and kidnapping, wow. This book was so amazing, and last but not least my Mal is still trying to win back his lady love after the very stupid male thing that he did (smh) and the respect of the town. It's going to be a slow process, but I'm rooting for him,we're all human beings and make mistakes. I highly recommend you visit Henry Adams Kansas, in Second Time Sweeter and see for yourself how awesome it is. Great job as always Beverly Jenkins, can't wait to come back next year.

Love this series !I always wait patiently for a Henry Adams book. The stories that involve the characters and their development. Like Mal, even when it appears you finally have things the way they are suppose to be, you can still mess them up. Wonderful job Ms. Jenkins!!! I so look forward to the next installment....hope it comes soon!

LoveBe still my heart. This story was so good. I just love Henry Adams. The love this town has for each other including the children is amazing. Excellent, exciting, heart felt and breathtaking. This is a great book club series.

Henry AdamsWish there was one in this world. LOVED Every word and every chapter. A few of them brought tears to my eyes and some had me laughing. Can't wait to see what happens with Mari and Tiff.

The series is a perfect antidote from stress and helps center readers who have overloaded on over-long or involved books. The problems encountered by the citizens of Henry Adams, Kansas, are often similar to real life, but the whole series has a lot of "wish fulfillment" involved. When a rich divorcee decides to buy Henry Adams on eBay, her deep pockets make everything easier than it actually is in small town in western Kansas. But that's part of the fun; wouldn't it be nice (isn't that why readers love happy-ever-after romances?). There are romances for three different generations in this series, but it would be classified a "gentle read", so it also appropriate for YA readers, as well as much more mature readers. The people in Henry Adams aren't perfect and make mistakes, but there are good life lessons learned by all, so this is an antidote to extremely depressing and violent books with sometimes really bad people. I've read the first in the series and then read this one for a committee I'm on; it helps to know the history of the characters, but I found the jump in chronological order to be OK."Living" with the residents of Henry Adams reminds me a lot of doing the same with the residents of Mitford and some other series in that vein. Recommended for many readers.

The lovely town of Henry Adams, Kansas always has something going on to kick the dust up. It is one in a book series. This time we find Malachi “Mal” July and his dumb ego has decided to defraud the town of $70,000. His rich girlfriend, Bernadine who literally purchased Henry Adams, took him on a trip to Key West, Florida and paid for the entire trip while he just sat and looked on. Old school gents would always pay for everything and it just didn’t sit well with him. It all went downhill from there. He stole the money to invest with his friend Clay. They both lost their money to a con man. The town members have grown into a true family. It’s time to prepare for the Henry Adams High School Reunion. So many who return for the reunion won’t even recognize the little town with all of its upgrades. Everyone is so excited and a few eye rolls to look forward too. You must always keep your eyes and ears open for what’s next. As in all you’ll fall in love with this book series. You may have begun with this book and there’s references to the past that won’t be explained completely but it won’t stop the flow of the story. I enjoyed it as I always do.

I'd honestly give this book 3.5 stars but that's not an option. It was an easy read, I was able to finish it over the weekend, and I enjoyed it a lot. This is the 9th installment of the series and continued to tell stories of the inhabitants of Henry Adams. We got to delve deeper into the story line of Gary, his daughters, his ex-wife and his high school sweetheart. We also got to see how Malachi finally came to his senses. I enjoy reading the Blessings series for many reasons, one of which is that it is comforting and wholesome. I was anxious for the next book to come out and maybe the author was too. There were a number of typos that the editor did not catch and I found that surprising. It did not take a way from the book but I did notice it. I also wish that the story explained what happened to Pastor Paula's family a bit more. With all that being said, I still cannot wait for the next book to come out and will be reading some of the historical fiction Beverly Jenkins has already written.

"Second Time Sweeter" is the 9th book in the "Blessings Series". It can easily be read as a stand-alone book but being a first-time reader, I did have a little trouble keeping the characters straight. It is a blending of many people and stories. Henry Adams, Kansas, is a small close-knit community that was purchased on eBay by a millionaire, Bernadine Brown. She moved in and provided much-needed updates by improving infrastructures, providing many services, building new homes, providing a school, etc. This once dying town is now thriving with both old and new residents. This book has many twists and turns, and hopes for happy second chances. It also shows the ability of the town to come together when anyone is in trouble. The townfolks are always there for each other, even when a bad decision is made. This was a fun read and I would love to read the other books in this series. I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

Second changes are a gift Henry Adams, a place full of love, caring, drama, and excitement. This was a very genuine story of how a man's pride can truly lead to very Stupid mistakes. Mal did a very Stupid thing by stealing, and there were times I wanted to slap him. But once he truly started to sincerely apologize it felt right and heartfelt. Especially loved his apology to the kids. He let the adults down but nothing like he did with Amari, and the other kids. Their disappointment with their "OG" had me in tears. Mal and Bernadine belong together so they will get through this. Also glad Gary and Nori are getting a second chance. I really enjoyed everyone's story except crazy Colleen. The FBI witness protection story added intrigue. I look forward to reading more about the special people of Henry Adams. Ms. Jenkins has done it again.
