Serpent’s Tooth Audiobook Summary

A man walks into a trendy Los Angeles restaurant — a disgruntled ex-employee with an automatic weapon — and seconds later, thirteen people are dead and thirty-two more have been wounded. It is a heinous act of mass slaughter that haunts Homicide Detective Peter Decker.

But, though eyewitnesses saw only the lone gunman — who apparently took his own life after his bloody work was done — evidence suggests more than one weapon was fired. It is a disturbing inconsistency that sends Decker racing headlong into a sordid, labyrinthine world of Southern California money and power, on an investigation that threatens to destroy his reputation and his career.

4 Stars! Great read, not very often do I get so mad at one of the nasty characters, but I did this time! There is a problem though, no cop (especially a superior cop), and I do mean, no cop would stand by while another cop is being assaulted by a very nasty woman and blame the assaulted cop for being in the wrong - just not believable. - Ergo why no 5 stars! From the blurb: A man walks into a trendy Los Angeles restaurant -- a disgruntled ex-employee with an automatic weapon -- and seconds later, thirteen people are dead and thirty-two more have been wounded. A lot of fun, as always. I always think I know where things are going and I'm almost mostly right but still wrong about something. Exactly how it should be.

this was a great story. it was written in 1997ish and you can tell that it was "pre-CSI" because the forensics were up and coming, not a given. nevertheless, the plot and mystery were still worth reading.

I enjoyed this book a lot. My first one of Kellerman. I have another book to read by her.

Greed, money, and critical planning. Major components in this title. Is it Suicide, Murder, or hired Assassins? Where will all the clues lead the team as they follow those found in the carnage of a shoot out at a popular restaurant? Lieutenant Peter Decker will find his clues a little bit unorthodox in this title, but skirting around the planned scenario is the only way to unearth a devious plot. Every title I read in this series, makes my heart sore with knowledge with a thirst to know more. Religious beliefs, Bible stories, philosophy lessons, and basic human needs, desires, and behaviors. Decker's team included three members of his family plus a war veteran friend as well as his regular crew. Who is the real psycho and why are there minions willing to follow blindly??

This is one of the earlier Decker novels and although I am reading it out of order, it is still enjoyable. The good thing about these books is that the author tends to give you the background information that you need in order to know who the characters are without bogging down the story. This is a very enjoyable book with several twists that will make you want to keep reading. I found that I actually enjoyed this more than some of the author's more recent Decker novels, the writing is tighter, the characters better developed and just overall, a better read.

Another exciting book in the Decker/Lazarus series.

This is a re-read (in fact, I've read this about 5 times now), but I enjoy it quite a bit. I'd actually give it 4.5 stars rounded down because of a few slower moments which weaken the pacing a bit for more.I'm a big fan of the Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series, and I've read all of the books set in LA (and one of those set in NY, which I don't love nearly as much). One of the reasons why these books work well for me is the relationship between Peter and his fellow detectives. We get to know them little by little throughout the series, and I really like that slow reveal (it reminds me of Law & Order). I also like Peter's and Rina's kids (Jacob, Sammy, Hannah, and Cindy) and seeing them grow up, as well. But most of all, I *love* the police procedural feel, and this book, in particular, is one of my favorites of the group.

A strong entry in this fascinating series. A seemingly random mass shooting at an elegant restaurant turns out to be anything but random. As the investigation proceeds, complications build, finally forcing Decker off the case (officially). Decker initially suspects the daughter of one very rich couple who were victims of the shooting, who immediately turns his fairly routine questioning into a harassment case, which causes serious political problems for the LAPD. In spite of all the difficulties and plot twists and turns, the team eventually solves the case. The book also includes a lot of domestic goings-on, which serve as a distraction to the mystery.

I continue to enjoy working my way through the Decker/Lazarus series. This time, the beleaguered Decker must match wits with a master manipulator of men - including those in leadership positions in the LAPD. At the same time we see in this volume the development of Decker's daughter, Cindy, in becoming a future law officer herself, and how her keen skills contribute to solving this horrific murder and drug spree. Again, well written in the style I have come to expect from Kellerman. So soon I will tackle book #11.

In a phase where I need simple escapism in my reading, I am continuing to pound through this series. It is providing enjoyable distraction. This story was no exception. Starting with a mass shooting in a restaurant, Decker and the increasing (in number and character development) cast of team members working for him finally bring the evil mastermind behind the killings to justice. Solid story, more about the crime than about the family, but that's okay for some of the stories.

** spoiler alert ** Great mystery with Peter Decker and cast. There was a mass murder at a local nightclub and everyone believed that the killer had killed himself. Peter has a gut feeling that isn't the case and with the help of Marge and Scott Oliver they go over the evidence to prove who did it.They have a few suspects then finally get the right person. I like the side story if Rhena,Cindy the boys and baby Hannah as well.

I found this book a little hard to settle into, and when I thought about it I could not understand why. Once I did, the story flew. It reminded me a little of the old Colombo movies; he always intuited who the murderer was and then just had to prove it. For me, this wasn’t the best example of this author’s work.
