The Seven Wonders adventures continue in this print bind-up of The Select and The Orphan. In The Orphan, learn the story of Daria, orphaned at a young age and enslaved by the Babylonians, and her valiant battle to escape the only city she’s ever called home. The Select:Burton Friedrich Wenders is dying because, like many before and after him, he is a Select. Through his father’s research, they have learned of an island that could unfold the mystery of Burton’s condition. Problems plague their sea voyage to the point that only four people survive: Burton, his father, and two crew members. But the worst part of their trip begins as soon as they step onto the island. The Orphan:Daria will do anything to keep her friends, Frada and Nico, safe. While Frada is dying, Daria enters the forbidden Hanging Gardens and steals a healing pomegranate. She gets the fruit to Frada, but the king’s guards arrest Nico for her crime. Only by tapping into her Select ability and working with the rebels does she have a chance of saving both herself and Nico. With each book in the Seven Wonders series, Lerangis will publish supplemental journals written centuries before the Jack, Aly, Cass, and Marco enter the picture. The Select shows the discovery of the mystical island before the Karai Institute is founded. The Orphan gives Daria’s backstory before Jack, Aly, Cass, and Marco come into her life. These journals are fast-paced, suspenseful reads that add more clarity and richness to the Seven Wonders world. The next journal, The Key, will be released February 2015.(Found on Children's Compass Chronicle: http://childrenscompasschronicle.blog...)(Found on childrenscompasschronicle.blogspot.com)

The two novellas in the Seven Wonders Journals collection were both nice continuations of two stories that aren't fully explained or understood in the Seven Wonders world. So it was fun to go back in time and live through legends, and past events that lead to what happens in the full length books of the series.Starting off with "The Select", I really loved the idea of learning about Burt Wenders and his father. And how they came to know about the G7W gene. Because of the length of the story I found it didn't make much sense, because I felt there wasn't an overall point to the story that was told. Though I did really enjoy exploring the island more in this novella, and getting to see what it was like before the Karai Institute was built. But with "The Orphan" everything changed! I absolutely loved this novella. I was fond of Daria in "Seven Wonders: Lost In Babylon" (Book 2) and to get to see life from her point of view was a pleasant surprise. This novella takes place before the events in Lost In Babylon....Read the rest on NORhttp://www.nightowlreviews.com/v5/Rev...

I thought these were really good, though a bit short because they are segments of a story written into a journal.I really liked the writing style. I had tried reading The Colossus Rises first, but the style of writing felt a little off and I had a strong dislike the for main character. Will read the other Journals books as I can find them
