Sexual Intelligence Audiobook Summary

Enjoyable sex: it’s not about technique or a perfect body or being hopelessly, passionately in love. It’s about Sexual Intelligence.

In his three decades of working with couples and individuals as a sex therapist and marriage counselor, Dr. Marty Klein has continually seen that although most people say what they want from sex is pleasure and closeness, that’s not what they focus on during sex. Instead, we’re preoccupied with how we look, what our partner is thinking, how we’re performing, and whether we’re “normal.” We do more thinking, worrying, and judging than experiencing. Sex like that can’t thrill us, can’t create intimacy, and can’t, well, feel sexy.

In Sexual Intelligence, Klein shows how to stop observing ourselves during sex, ending our obsession with sexual performance and sexual normality. “I don’t help people ‘function’ better during sex,” he says. “I teach people how to relax and enjoy sex with the body they have, the partner they have, in the situation they have.” Now that’s something we all want: fulfilling, exciting sex at every stage of our lives.

In Sexual Intelligence, Klein challenges our understanding of sex, love, intimacy, romance, and satisfaction. After all, sex isn’t just an activity. Change the way you think about sex, and you can change your sex life–forever.

Dr. Klein gets beneath the superficialialities of sex and relationships and gives us some excellent tools for analyzing our attitudes and behavior. I have read dozens of books on sex and sexuality, this one goes beyond any others. His insights about the interaction of sex and the rest of our lives is excellent. He explores so many different ways to look at so-called sexual dysfunctions and reveals that many sexual problems are rooted in other life issues. This is a book to read carefully. It is also a book for those who actually have some experience with relationships. While a less experienced person will undoubtedly benefit, I think someone who has seen a number of sexual relationships in their life will best understand and see the patterns he discusses. The real meat of the book is in the second half but reading and understanding the concepts of the first half is necessary to fully benefit from this book. If you are not challenged to look and the rethink some of your core beliefs after reading this, you either did not read it carefully or you are one of the few who has already thought and integrated a good deal into your communication and relationship style. The proof, of course, would be that you experience a high level of satisfaction in your sexual relationships. If not, re read the book.

I found this book to be the most sensible, down-to-earth, realistic and healthy discussion of sexuality I have ever read. The author is clearly a true professional and not just a pseudo-professional like so many other authors of books of this nature. And he has a nice sense of humor about the whole subject. I found myself laughing frequently as he described his clients' experience as well as his summations of various aspects of the human experience. Klein draws on his decades of experience as a sex therapist and illustrates his points with stories drawn from his clients (with names changed of course). I have read a couple of other of Dr. Klein's books which I also enjoyed though I didn't find them quite as wonderful as this one. If you read only one book on sexuality in your lifetime, this should be it. Dr. Klein also publishes an email newsletter that carries stories of his experience in giving talks about sexuality around the world as well as news-worthy events in the U.S. and abroad as they relate to our culture's treatment of human sexuality. I subscribe to this newsletter and find the stories useful and interesting.

I loved this book from beginning to end. It broke down the meaning of Sex trying to find intimacy and closeness but also getting all those bad ideas out of your brain. Of not being sexy enough for your partner. What hit me the most is communication this books helps you to understand how to communicate efficiently with your partner about sex. I recommend this book to all couples and especially singles as well

Funny to read. This book shows how much people are idiotically brainwashed with religions and beliefs of bigots of various kinds. I'll put it in a few sentences. First, how do you expect to be happy with classifications of the kind - "normal", "not normal"? You can just hope to stay with your fucking idiotic romance novels (or likewise idiotic self-help books).Second, in love (sex) anything is normal that is agreed upon between conscious individuals. Any originator telling otherwise is damaged (neurotic: Neurosis and Human Growth: The Struggle Towards Self-Realization) enough to keep you in their own imaginary sectarian belief network.Third, no surprise some people make so much problems with sex.Overall, good common sense book.

About halfway through this book, I turned to my fiance and said, "I wish I could memorize every single word in this book. It would make me a better person, and a better therapist." On rare but lovely occasions, I come across a book that I wish everyone could read. This is one of those books.I've been a fan of Marty Klein's speaking career for almost a decade, but his first book that I read, "America's War on Sex," was a little bit too political for my taste. This book sounded like it had greater applications for myself and my clients, though, so I gave it a go. This is a practical, no-nonsense guide to thinking about sex in a way that takes away the scariness most people give it. It encourages greater communication between partners, rewriting of expectations as people age, redefining "success" and "failure" (and, for that matter, "sex"), and provides tools to decrease anxiety. If sex plays a different role in your life than you'd like it to, or than it used to... if you're older than you used to be, or have some limiting beliefs about your sexuality and performance... and if you're part of the 99% of the population who is interested in sex (that's not hyperbolic - 1% of people are asexual), this is a great book for you.Oh and also, it's funny.

Dr. Klein moves beyond the mechanics of sex to address the complexities and emotional dynamics of sexuality. He reminds us that there is a human brain and heart connected to our genitals. He challenges the false scripts that perpetuate feelings of shame, failure and frustration. Plus, his frank and witty style make Sexual Intelligence a pleasurable read. A must read for people who have sex - which is just about everyone.

Klein has a great depth of mastery (and perhaps a wee too much confidence) that allows him to clearly put forth a view of sexuality that strips away a lot of the societal angst and myth we all carry around. The book is a nice journey. Though it covers clients with a wide range of sexual orientations, it also slips into hetero normative thinking now and then. A worthwhile read.

A enjoyable mix of "what not to do" anecdotes, clear scientific explanations, and advice. A fresh perspective on what usually passes for sex and, now importantly, relationship advice.

Did I ever think that reading a book about changing the way I think about sexuality could be funny? No, I didn't think that, but damn has it been proven it can be done! Dr. Klein is not only on point about how sexuality is viewed in a modern context and the ways we can change our attitudes about what constitutes good sex, but he is funny about it! I dare you to read this book and not giggle. I have definitely changed the way that I think about what can constitute a 'sexual encounter' and that there are way more layers to sex than are currently portrayed in mainstream media. (Or even not mainstream, but highly accessible media...) Everyone needs to remember that romance and sex begins in the mind - and we need to change the way our minds consider sex to enhance the way our bodies give and receive pleasure - the cornerstone of a great sexual relationship.Reading this book has also pointed out the HUGE inadequacies that the typical American sexual education poses to how we as a culture view sex. If we could be taught that sexuality is just a component of being human and that consent, contraception (unless one is TRYING to conceive, obviously), and mutual pleasure should be the goals of any encounter most people could be way more satisfied in their sexuality and sex life.

A very good book for people who are completely ignorant of their body needs and emotional intelligence. It answers or help you understand some of the basics required for mature and honest sexual relationship. Once you pass all those initial obstacles you enter the familiar territory of self help dilemma. You know all this great staff yet unable to stop worrying, to feel the fear and act, to care less about opinion of others. It is the domain of good therapist or even psychiatrist to overcome these obstacles. The autor is a therapist, he knows the individual characteristics of each patient, so he can help them. Howevere the way to do it is very different for everyone. So you can read this book to help you indulge in the self help genre for sex. More serious or troubling issues require precision and context of one’s situation. Also this book might help for people who discover sex or new partners in later life no matter what their age. People in long term monogamous relationship often forget that there are other types of people out there. Even 30 smth people can be rigid an inflexible in their sex ways.

I had to listen to this twice. I found so much of myself in many of his patients, Kind of scary. This is very good information as I venture out to find a new love. I grabbed the Kindle version so I can mark it up. Incredibly good advice, especially for us in America! Everyone should read this one!
