Stand Tall Audiobook Summary

In this inspiring memoir, Dewey Bozella recounts his life and the twenty-six years he spent behind bars for a murder he did not commit–a stirring tale of courage, strength, faith, and perseverance.

In the late 1970s, Dewey Bozella was wrongfully accused of murdering Emma Crapser, a ninety-two-year-old resident of Poughkeepsie, New York. Sentenced to twenty years to life in prison, Bozella fiercely maintained his innocence throughout his ordeal at Sing Sing, and even refused the prosecutor’s offer of instant freedom in exchange for admission of guilt. But in 2009, more than a quarter century later, Dewey Bozella would reclaim his identity and his humanity when his conviction was vacated.

In this powerful memoir, Bozella tells his harrowing and amazing story–interweaving his time in prison with stories of a childhood marked by violence and pain. He shares the joys of marrying the love of his life from behind bars, becoming a champion boxer, and earning his education; the agony of being denied parole four times, and living in a cellblock with his brother’s murderer and, eventually, the killer whose thumbprint was found in Emma Crapser’s apartment. Yet the fighter in Bozella never gave up. He would become a free man thanks to his undying faith, stalwart persistence, the aid of the Innocence Project, and Wilmer Hale, the Park Avenue law firm whose young pro bono attorney doggedly worked toward his release when all hope seemed lost.

Today, Bozella considers himself blessed. Stand Tall is a testament to optimism and love. It is the compelling story of a man who fought against inequity and hardship and, against all odds, came out on top.

A quick read, Bozella offers an inspiring account of a life society discarded. We follow a mischievous boy setting offer fire-crackers evolution into a small time hood stealing bicycles and boom boxes. Eventually, he is wrongly convicted for a brutal murder. Bozella’s describes Sing Sing maximum-security prison by provides insight into how it earned the name “Swing Swing.” There, he makes the most of an awful situation, getting an education, embracing religion, marrying, always maintaining his innocence and never giving up.The most touching part for this reader occurs when the man who killed his brother shows up at the same facility. With a hundred eyes watching, Bozella steps up to him and offers forgiveness."Stand Tall" is a good but not great book. The reader is left to wonder what will become of him. Will he live in poverty, struggling to find his way? What happened to Diamond? Did she develop into a well-adjusted adult? Or did the streets claim her?

The author of this book was staying at the hotel where I work. He came to the front desk to check out and let me know he would speaking to a group attending a convention at our hotel. I asked what his topic would be and he gave me a short summary of his life story. He told me he had written a book and I told him I would read it. This was a good read and Dewey's story is pretty amazing. Mr Bozella was such a positive kind gentleman. It is really hard to believe what he has experienced.

Fighting for your life. Convicted of s crime you did not do. Stand tall is a book about a young man with criminal tendencies that was convicted of a murder he did not do. He was imprisoned by two jury's in two separate trials with very sketchy evidence. Even though you know how this story is going to end the writing and the heartfelt story compels you to read it through for the details. A great story and a compelling read in a true life of someone wrongly convicted of a crime.

I picked up this book because I’m from just north of Poughkeepsie. I’d moved away before Emma Crapser was killed (though I do wonder if she was related to my high school classmate Marty 🤔) so I don’t remember it but Dewey’s story intrigued me. The strength of this man astounds me! The book tells the awful story of his treatment along with the beautiful story of him coming through it with a strength of character that few possess.

This book was well worth reading. It gave a close up and personal view of one man's experience in prison that was, unfortunately discouraging because of the huge problems with our legal system on many levels. I gave it 4 stars because I feel there is more to the story that he could have told us, but didn't, but other than that it was an excellent book. Thank you, Dewey, for sharing this portion of your life with us. Continue to Stand Tall.
