Still Dead Audiobook Summary

Since the disbanding of the Special Homicide Investigation Team, J. P. Beaumont’s biggest concern is pondering whether he and his wife Mel should finally get a dog. But one voicemail from his old friend Ralph Ames is about to change that. Through Ralph, Beau has become involved in an organization called The Last Chance, which enlists a number of retired homicide investigators to tackle long unsolved cold cases. The one that has just landed on Beau’s plate is a thirty-year-old missing persons case.

The facts are muddy at best; Janice Marie Harrison’s car was found abandoned near a bridge, and scratched in the dirt nearby was the word “sorry”. It’s possible her death was a suicide, but her body was never found. And as Beau begins to investigate, he discovers that no one connected to Janice–not her once all-star football player widower, Anders; not her long-grieving, sister, Estelle; not sheriff Gavin Loper, who was deputy sheriff at the time of Janice’s disappearance; and not Anders’ second wife Betsy–is exactly what they seem. The question is, which of them knows the truth?

And why have they kept it buried?

Still Dead by J.A. Jance is a 2017 Witness Impulse publication. This short story reacquainted me with Beaumont after what has seemed like a lengthy absence, and whetted my appetite for more. The case Beaumont is currently working on, with the ‘Last Chance’ organization, is a thirty -year old cold case involving the odd disappearance of Janice Marie Harrison. Her death is chalked up as probable suicide, but her sister is convinced Janice was murdered. Initially, the case hit a dead end, but suddenly it’s blazing hot. Did Janice disappear on purpose, commit suicide or was she murdered? Beaumont begins trying to piece together what happened to Janice thirty long years ago, and unearths a shocking and diabolical scheme. Will Janice’s family finally get the truth about what really happened to Janice?I love Beaumont! I really do enjoy all of Jance’s series, but Beaumont and all his various trials and tribulations have endeared him to me, most of all. So, anytime I have a chance to touch base with him, I grab it. This is a very short story, but Jance still manages to add details and emotion. I love cold cases, too, so I’m enjoying the direction this series is taking, and I love it when victims and their families get long overdue justice. Of course, it doesn’t bring the victim back, they are ‘still dead’ as Beaumont stoically points out, but the families are freed from the limbo they live in when they are robbed of answers. Overall, despite time constraints necessitating a hurried pacing, which of course means compromising the usual building up of suspense- it is still a satisfying read, one that fans of this series will want to add to their collections. If you are new to this series or would like to sample a small taste of it, this novella would be a perfect place to start. You even get a very brief look at Beaumont’s past, so you won’t feel lost. This small nibble, though, might make you want to read a few of the older books in the series, so you can better appreciate this terrific character, and you definitely want to read all the upcoming installments. I hope the next time I catch up with Beaumont, he is discovering the joys of pet ownership!! 3.5 stars

A novella that bridges Beaumont and Mel' s lives from the shutting down the Special Attorney Department as Beaumont moves into cold cases. In this one, he is asked to investigate a 30-year case that was closed as a suicide. With the help of Mel and the local sheriff, there is a final resolution to the case. The ebook is priced beyond my comfort zone so I will wait until becomes available.

This novella is in a world I know well with characters I love. It has the intelligence of police following the information and making reasonable deductions as to what information they need next or who they need to interview. There is satisfaction in solving a cold case from perhaps 30 years past to give closure to the victim's sister. Can JP do it? This also has relationship tidbits from his life, his connections with his family and friends.

A great little story!!!Short but sweet. Beau is bored. With no job while Mel is a new police chief, he has no regular job. The new place is finished and he has no cases with TLC right now. Should they get a dog? Beau doesn't have a good history with dogs. Then a new case from TLC pops up. Why would a young wife drive to a lonely point and throw herself in the ocean in the dark of night? It happened 30 years ago and her sister is still convinced that her sister was murdered! But who did it? At first he can find no facts to support this. But an off hand remark to the local sheriff turns up one clue. Will it break the case? Find out in this outstanding short story. Highly recommended.

On my latest long road trip, I decided to try out a few new-to-me authors in the mystery/thriller genre. Despite understanding some of the limitations of the format, I tried novellas. Of the four I listened to today, this one by J. A. Jance was by far the best. I really enjoyed the cast of characters, and was even pleasantly surprised by a couple of them. I appreciated that the main character was a different generation from many of the other books I regularly read. I also liked that the use of swear words was minimal and that there were no very graphic scenes of violence or sex.

Another Great Jance Mystery just too short!I have read everything written by this author. And this one was good. Probably not the best seemed to have a lot of words just to fill in the spaces at times. The story was just to short. When I buy a book I expect more for my money and usually get it with this author. I still recommend it to others, it is another good murder mystery told by Beaumont, but I wish it was longer.

This is my first J.P. Beaumont book, and it was a short "in-between books" story. I really liked it. I've been reading J.A. Jance's Ali Reynolds series and liking them very much too, so no surprise that a different series would be just as good (maybe better?).So many books to read, so little time.

A nice tidbit!Although novellas are quite short, I still enjoy a tiny tidbit while I'm waiting for the next book. Yes, they leave me wanting more but I still enjoy them. These characters are so so well established and small mystery in between works because the reader already knows the background. A fun little read.
