The Awakening Audiobook Summary

If you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl–someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I’m as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment–not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a sinister organization called the Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I’m a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control; I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever.

Now I’m running for my life with three of my supernatural friends–a charming sorcerer, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch–and we have to find someone who can help us before the Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.

The Awakening Audiobook Narrator

Cassandra Morris is the narrator of The Awakening audiobook that was written by Kelley Armstrong

When librarians finally granted Kelley Armstrong an adult card, she made straight for the epic fantasy and horror shelves. She spent the rest of her childhood and teen years happily roaming fantastical and terrible worlds, and vowed that someday she'd write a story combining swords, sorcery, and the ravenous undead. That story began with the New York Times bestselling Sea of Shadows and continues with Empire of Night.

Armstrong's first works for teens were the New York Times bestselling Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising trilogies. She lives in rural Ontario with her husband, three children, and far too many pets.

The Awakening is a somewhat traditional second book in a trilogy in that some of it seems to be filler while we wait to find out what happens in the climax. It's good filler, though. The idea that there are secret supernatural groups out there is very cool, but then add in the genetic experimentation on their own kind gone wrong, and it goes up to a whole new level. The book opens with Chloe in some sort of a hospital that is obviously someplace you don't want to be unless your idea of a good time is to be experimented on and then murdered. And she knows this because ghosts like to chat her up. This is directly where the last book left off, so you don't have any time gaps to contend with, which is pretty great since I'm reading them back to back this time around.I also like that Chole isn't an idiot who has to be convinced something is desperately wrong. The whole thing stinks like a cheese fart, so she's actively looking for a way out the entire time she's there. The plan is to reunite with Simon & Derek, who managed to escape capture, so they can resume trying to get the hell away from the Edison Group. Eventually, she does get out - with the reluctant help of her old nemesis, Tori. Then the four of them hit the open road. The vast majority of this book focuses on these kids trying to stay under the radar and get to somewhere safe. I really liked how there was no romantic-y garbage going on here. Chole and Derek get to know each other because they have to in order to survive. And even though Simon is the typical hot artistic boy, and Chloe is the typical cute but doesn't know it girl, they aren't making mush eyes at each other instead of being worried about getting killed by mad scientists.I remembered liking this series so much when I first read it, but I'm surprised at how well it has held up over the past 11 years. Unbelievably, this is still one of my favorite Young Adult stories.Recommended.

The Awakening (Darkest Powers, #2), Kelley ArmstrongThe Darkest Powers is a series of paranormal novels by Kelley Armstrong. The series revolves around The Edison Group, a team of supernatural scientists, and the subjects they have experimented on.The Awakening takes place directly after the events in The Summoning. Chloe has been recaptured by The Edison Group, a team of supernatural scientists responsible for manipulating her DNA, therefore enhancing her necromantic abilities. While there, she discovers that she, and other supernaturals are experimental subjects who were genetically modified at birth.Chloe and Victoria Enright (Tori, a witch) lead the Edison Group to a factory where they were supposed to meet Derek and Simon. Chloe and Tori escape with help from Liz after struggling with Tori's mother, Diane (also a witch), but not before Diane hits Chloe's aunt Lauren with a seemingly fatal spell. The two girls run and hide. Chloe reads a letter her Aunt Lauren gave her which explains that she only ever wanted to help young supernaturals but it wasn't until her own niece was in danger that she realized how dangerous the Edison Group was. The letter also reveals that Chloes mom had a brother, who died (possibly through suicide) due to a mishap with his powers. The next day, they meet up with Derek and Simon at the factory. The four of them decide to find Simon and Derek's father (Kit Bae) friend Andrew Carson, who will surely be able to give them a place to stay. He lives in New York, so they decide to take a bus and work from there. On the bus to New York City, Chloe is woken by Derek who tells her that he feels another change coming on. She offers to go with him and asks Tori to tell Simon that if they don't make it back to the bus, they will meet up in New York City. They get off the bus and find some woods near a service station, where Derek prepares for his change. Just like before, it doesn't work. He is exhausted afterwards, so Chloe tells him to get some sleep and they will get on another bus in the morning. After he falls asleep Chloe witnesses the murder of a young girl in the same patch of woods. After realizing she cannot interact with it, and that it repeats over and over, she realizes that it is a memory from the real murder than occurred there before. She does not sleep that night, for fear of the girl's body still being there in the woods.

Still loving my decision to reread this series. Yes, it's a little juvenile in it's scope but it holds such nostalgia value to me that I can't help but still love it.As far as middle books go, this one is solid. The stakes get higher and more background is revealed about our main characters and even the Edison Group itself. And of course there's no solid ending, just more mystery that ensures you will read the final book.I really feel like the characters are finally coming into their own as well. They are learning to trust themselves and each other, but stay wary of outsiders. I liked reading about them discovering more about their powers. Tori was always the shock here. While you still don't like her, you understand her more and why she is the way that she is. I ultimately believe that she wants friends and she wants to be liked, but doesn't know how to go about making that happen. She just keeps putting up shields and pushing people away. But with a mother like hers, can you blame her?But it's mostly our main three who run this show: Chloe, Derek and Simon. I love their relationship with each other but you just know problems are about to come because brothers can't like the same girl and it end happy. And now on to book 3!Original review from 2011: (view spoiler)[This was my second time reading this book, but I wanted to reread it before I reviewed it in case my memory was tweaked. It wasn't. I love this series. The characters are so rich and so distinctive that you can't help but fall in love with them and pray that they get out of this mess. Chloe- I like that the author stays true to her youth. Chloe is very solid through all the books, changing as her life changes, at a natural pace. Times I want to smack her because of how naive she is, but then I remember her age and how confused she must be with everything going on. I do believe that she honestly does like Simon, but I know that her heart is with Derek - even if she doesn't realize this yet. Derek- I LOVE DEREK. I don't understand how you could not. His protectiveness not only over Chloe, but his brother as well is so endearing. He knows what people think of him and he pretends that he doesn't care, but he does. And he's so obviously in love with Chloe but torn at the same time because of Simon's attraction for her. He's extremely loyal and it's not his fault he's a werewolf. Simon- For some reason, I can never picture him the way the author describes him. I have my own picture in my head, it's weird lol. But I do like Simon. And in any other scenario, he would be perfect with Chloe, just not here when there's Derek. Tori- You gotta love to hate her. And in the beginning, I did hate her. Tori's roll in this group is the brat. I love how she pretty much tells it like it is, regardless of what people think. She pretends to hate everyone around her, but deep down, I think that she's happy with this group, happy to belong somewhere when it's so obvious that her parents don't want her around since her mother only uses her as a science experiment. Great second book in this series. Love it. (hide spoiler)]

The Awakening is even more enticing and action packed than its prequel. While the setting shifts, it is no less menacing as Chloe and the gang face a grim and tretcherous life on the streets. Tension is heightened by the added appeal of a perfectly sinister and powerful enemy and the suspense of unknown supernatural powers. Armstrong's teen characters are smart and resourceful, and each obstacle thrown their way requires them to use every bit of caution, wits, and intelligence they possess. Armstrong focuses a little more on the technical aspects of the teens' powers and abilities, especially as Derek and Chloe explore their capabilities and restraints. Their difficulties and the tension that they face help them grow as characters and make them more appealing. My crush on Derek has increased ten fold. The Awakening is a dark, gripping, and highly suspenseful read will have readers staying up to all hours of the night and leave them desperate for the next installment!

Chloe Saunders is back in the second book of the Darkest Powers series. If you haven't read The Summoning yet read it before reading this review. SPOILERS.At the end of the first book Chloe and Rae go to Chloe's Aunt Lauren for help, not knowing that she is working for the very group that they are trying to escape from. As a result, Chloe and Rae end up locked in a high security warehouse that houses the Edison Groups many experiments. Luckily, Derek and Simon are still on the run and on the lookout for Chloe and Rae.After encountering ghosts of some of the former Lyle House occupants Chloe decides to take matters into her own hands and figure out a way to escape, this time for good. With the help of Liz's ghost and a trapped demi-demon Chloe manages to find more information about the Edison group and how she can possibly escape from them.Once away from the Edison group Chloe is forced to face the reality of living on the run with nowhere and nobody to turn to other than Tori, Derek, and Simon. Her father has posted a $500,000 reward for her safe return and the Edison group is no longer worried about keeping any of them alive. Will Chloe and the others be able to outrun the Edison group or will their luck finally run out? Will Chloe ever figure out what her true feelings are for Derek and Simon? The Darkest Powers series is full of paranormal happenings, betrayal, and budding romance. I highly recommend this series for any fans of the Twilight series. Definitely not the same story line but just as good.

Probably not quite 4 stars but ...this is just one of those series where I want to read all three novels before I really give a solid opinion, but so far I like where it seems to be headed. The pacing could be better (meaning I wouldn't complain if things moved along somewhat) and the relationships could be clearer but overall it's a pleasant experience and I'm eager to read the final book.

Reviewed by: Rabid Reads.Book 1 focused more on world-building while as this one was all about the action; the kids are still on the run from the Edison Group, Souza had his first encounter with werewolves and it did NOT go well, and living on the streets comes with its own set of challenges as well. I’ve enjoyed watching Chloe and Derek’s relationship progress throughout this trilogy, they get lots of alone time in this installment, and their dialogue is definitely one of the highlights of this story. Unfortunately this novel was somewhat bogged down by Tori’s annoying POV, and the characters’ run-in with the wolves gave me some pause because it took place near Syracuse, NY which is close to the North American Pack’s home base, and none of the WOTO weres would have dealt with a youngin the way Derek was treated in THE AWAKENING. Mutts? Anyway, another quick and satisfying listen from Armstrong.Cassandra Morris’ narration was appropriate for these audiobooks, her voice fit that of the fifteen year old MC’s, and she incorporated Chloe’s speech impediment into the dialogue admirably. However, as the story progressed and the heroine evolved, the child-like tone would have benefited from a slight adjustment. I had zero issues with listening to these installments one after the other because the performance was homogeneous, and the character voices didn’t deviate. The pacing did Armstrong’s writing style proud, and the built-in creep factor that comes with seeing ghosts was always present. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase another Young Adult title that featured Morris as the narrator.

Delivered in her trademark style, Kelley creates a world within our own where supernatural teens are nothing but science projects to be shown and used then tossed away--sometimes even killed.Chloe's character becomes even clearer in this novel then the one preceding it, and boy is being in her head interesting. She is struggling to understand how strong she is, and is no where near the point where she can control her powers. Despite her interest in her powers, Chloe would much rather be normal again--what ever that means, as she no longer knows herself.Although with too little romance for my taste, The Awakening is an even better read than The Summoning. There is never a slow moment in their journey or a false line in Kelley's writing. The Awakening is a perfect edge-of-your seat read with plenty of surprises. Not only is this a great YA read, but it also is fitting for adults as well.Kelley has created a gritty, realistic world, one that Horror, Sci-fi, and Paranormal readers will love. Book II in the Darkest Powers trilogy takes us even farther into a world where the supernatural intrudes on the everyday life with riveting effect, and has a clear DO NOT ENTER sign that you will try to ignore. An amazing novel! I want the next installment now! Leah:) from www.trunerd.blogspot.com

The second wonderful, paranormal, romantic book in the series! Chloe's on the run and fighting to stay free and alive... along with Derek, Tori and Simon. And they aren't the best group when I comes to working together. Romance is drifting in the wind with the Edison group, and both things are doing their best to ruin the three people trying to stay alive. Loved it!
