The Dictionary of Body Language Audiobook Summary

From the world’s #1 body language expert* comes the essential audiobook for decoding human behavior

“The ultimate body language reference. I’ll be both referring to and recommending this book on a daily basis for many years to come.” –Amy Cuddy

Joe Navarro has spent a lifetime observing others. For 25 years, as a Special Agent for the FBI, he conducted and supervised interrogations of spies and other dangerous criminals, honing his mastery of nonverbal communication. After retiring from the bureau, he has become a sought-after public speaker and consultant, and an internationally bestselling author. Now, a decade after his groundbreaking book What Every BODY is Saying, Navarro returns with his most ambitious work yet. The Dictionary of Body Language is a pioneering “field guide” to nonverbal communication, describing and explaining the more than 400 behaviors that will allow you to gauge anyone’s true intentions.

Moving from the head down to the feet, Navarro reveals the hidden meanings behind the many conscious and subconscious things we do. Readers will learn how to tell a person’s actual feelings from subtle changes in their pupils; the lip behaviors that betray concerns or hidden information; the many different varieties of arm posturing, and what each one means; how the position of our thumbs when we stand akimbo reflects our mental state; and many other fascinating insights to help you both read others and change their perceptions of you.

Listeners will turn to The Dictionary Body Language again and again–a body language bible for anyone looking to understand what their boss really means, interpret whether a potential romantic partner is interested or not, and learn how to put themselves forward in the most favorable light.

I loved Navarro's "What Everybody Is Saying" and I was eagerly anticipating The Dictionary of Body Language. The good and bad news is that it delivers as promised. It is bite-sized and still comprehensive in documenting the myriad aspects of body language and their possible interpretations. The disappointment, for me at least, is that there was no story-telling. The book is as dry as a standard reference manual, useful without being particularly interesting. I highlighted some pieces that I can see using ongoing, but I was just a little disappointed in the book relative to my own expectations.

After reading the author's "What every body is saying" I really started taking notice in body language, and that book was a very good introduction to the field for me.This one is not good as an introduction: it lacks illustrations and describes body language literally from head to toes, rather than from basics to subtleties. It's main purpose, I believe, is to refresh your memory. If you are not sure what a particular gesture or pose means, you can just look it up here. It's much easier to do it with this book, since it's content is categorized from upper to lower body. Plus it has more info than "What every body is saying" and no storytelling. The book serves it's purposes very well.

A really great practical guide that goes over small tics and movements in every part of the body and what they can tell you. I honestly have nothing bad to say about this book and it was a fun read.

I really enjoyed learning about body language. There was so much I didn't know and now I feel like I pay more attention to how people's bodies react and not just focus on their words. Highly educational. Would reccomend if you're interested in reading people.

Good book but almost every movement is explained as the person being anxious or nervous

The book was eloquently written, very detailed however I would have loved if there was a bit of humor used in the examples given to explain scenarios for reading the body.

As a writer I'm finding this book helpful in the art of showing vs. telling when it comes to the wide array of emotions of "body language".I would recommend it for any writer to have on their shelf as a quick reference.I most particularly like topic #111 (Tongue in Cheek). So many double meanings.

I appreciated the brevity of this book - it will make it easier to go back and look for information when I want to. I also enjoyed how the author organized the behaviors he discussed by body part. There were some behaviors he wrote about that I wish he went into more detail on why humans do these certain actions, not just what the actions are.

Facilitates More Acute Awareness of OthersBoth of these books: The Dictionary of Body Language and What Every Body is Saying by retired FBI agent, Joe Navarro, are excellent at facilitating the understanding of what another might really be saying (or not saying) or thinking. The information in these books is indispensable both in personal situations (intimate and familial as well as friendships) as well as business interactions, but is also phenomenal in counseling and/or various types of therapeutic situations, since it alerts the counselor/therapist to possible issues that might need to be brought to the surface and addressed. It has especially helped me, since from the time I was young, I saw the best in everyone but didn’t always recognize red flags that should have alerted me to the danger lurking behind the smile. Fortunately, I’ve learned quite a bit since then. But knowing this information has raised my emotional and intelligence quotients significantly. Thank you, Mr. Navarro, for your amazing contribution.

I have recently read his first book: What every BODY is saying and thought it was one of (if not the) most interesting and educational books I have ever read. It has truly opened my eyes to the world I never knew existed. Body language is truly the second language we all speak, but only a select few both know that they speak it and speak it well. I would recommend Joe Navarro's first book (what every BODY is saying What Every Body is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People) to read before this one. I think would prove a more open introduction to the vast world of body language. It would also make it easier to understand some of the stuff Joe Navarro says in context, as he provides his own stories in the book as well. After you read that book, and if you are intrigued, this, I think would prove a good follow up. This is because it provides a more intricate and detailed account of body language. His first book, (say it with me) What Every BODY is Saying is more story-driven, while this one is, as the title suggests, more of a field guide format. I am 50% of the way through the book, and I loved it so much, I wrote an extensive review, I hope that tells you something.
