In the acknowledgements section to this book, the author praises his publisher for taking a chance on publishing his fan fiction series, of which this is the second volume.  The thing is, this book is more than merely fan fiction, while being firmly a genre work that is aware of the conventions of the genre and also blessed with a gentle sense of irony.  There is even a beautiful meta moment towards the end of the novel where a main character sees people reading the first novel in the series, seeking to ground the story within the reality of its own story.  It is unclear at this point whether Mr. Wolfe will ever turn his attention to writing literary fiction, but even at this early point in his writing career it is evident that he can work with considerable skill and he knows his way around creating compelling plots and complex characters that both honor and transcend the cliches and conventions of his chosen genre and that also honors the game he is writing about.  This book may certainly be an unofficial Minecraft-fan adventure, but it is an enjoyable adventure and a compelling one that is well worth reading. In terms of its plot, this book follows the classic U-shaped trajectory of trilogies.  If the first book (or movie) of a fantasy trilogy has unlikely heroes winning grand victories against immensely superior foes, the second installments are often far darker and involve a great deal of treachery.  Can a sense of justice aimed at supporting newbies survive the prejudices that exist against such people?  How do republics deal with the need for security?  Is a just nation incapable of self-defense?  How does one deal with traitors when one is a basically just person oneself?  These are weighty questions, and the book deals thoughtfully with these subjects, not in a heavy-handed fashion but through compelling characters making decisions--some of them mistakes--in the heat of the moment.  We see President Stan and his deeply divided council wrestling with how to effectively deal with a new realm, the Nation of Noctem, which has fanatical behavior among most of its leaders and ruled by a treacherous leader who has no qualms about killing his most able subordinates to make sure that they do not threaten him once they are no longer of use to him, and they do not handle it well.  By the end of the novel, indeed, our main characters are in a deeply dangerous and beleaguered place, awaiting the final installment to allow Stan to reach his apotheosis of greatness.  There are at least a few aspects of this book that require a fair degree of insight and skill.  The author delays the reveal of traitor inside Elementia City to Stan and his fellow republican leaders to the point of maximum impact, allowing the reader to wonder as the villains do if the government of Elementia City is so incompetent as to be unable to recognize traitors.  Whether or not it is intentional, this book is a fitting discussion of the limits of constitutionality and the question of war powers and how it is that just regimes can defend themselves against rebellion and treason.  As an American, the times of the Civil War and our own present period reminds me that this is not merely a concern in imaginary regimes, but a very realistic one as well.  Not only does Wolfe craft a very strong plot with compelling characters whose fate we care about, but he does so in a way that will prompt serious-minded readers to apply the lessons and thoughts about this fictional realm to their own real life political situations, and it strips a great deal of romance from the grubby behaviors within the politics of institutions.  Wolfe views the decisions made as flawed but made from the best of intentions, and that is a way to think about even the best of governments and institutions in our own flawed and fallen world.

In this second book, The New Order, the story of Stan and all his friends and supporters carry out the good life after defeating King Kev and claiming the city of Elementia for all the lower level players every where. But as was learned at the end of book one, it is not all going well in their newly found leadership. Not everyone is happy with their victory and will join so easily to a world where higher leveled and lower leveled plays live together peacefully. The new rebel organization the Noctem Alliance, a group set on destroying president Stan and pulling apart his happy community. With this new threat comes decisions and combat, some worth and not worth sacrificing. With their brief moment of peace they experience before this new alliance emerges and disrupts their happy times Stan and his friends enjoy their new life. However as tensions start to build and confusion sets in because of the latest attacks on their peace, you start to see some of the ugly sides of those favorite characters. Thankfully though we even get to know one of my favorite characters from the first book, Leonidas. When we first Leo we were tempted to hate him along with the rest of the RAT1 crew. Now we are able to see what has happened to him since the end of King Kev and joining up with the Noctem Alliance. He is clearly struggling with where he should be and what he wants and doesn’t want to accomplish with his time on the Elementia server. This time the players mostly spend their adventures on the surface of Elementia. We also get to return to some familiar places and talk to some friendly folks from the NLC Village. Another location added is the frozen Biome where the Noctem Alliance has set up their base out of site and untouched. Here they are able to move forward with their efforts to over throw Stan and his city without interruption. This new threat has an seemly powerful and elusive leader Lord Tendious who we don’t learn much about until the very end of this book. This book is a fiction book which I would recommend to anyone of age 10 and older. Even though it is based on Minecraft I enjoy the story more. I chose the book not cause of Minecraft, yet because of its interesting story. The story has little to do with the game, yet will conclude happiness to fans and not fans of the game.

The Elementia Chronicles: The New Order, by Sean Fay Wolfe is an inspiring book with many messages, plot twists, and parts of the story that just throw the reader off. It shows that Minecraft is more than just a game. When three players, Charlie Kat and Steve, face the hardest risks and consequences through many choices throughout the game. And also that there is always more than it seems at play in reality or life inside the game. The book itself will make the reader feel like him/herself will be in the book, with choosing the risks or needs. In total, I will give a 5/5 star rating, going in with the deep story and tragedies the characters face along the way. In total it is an amazing book, but you should read The Elementia Chronicles: Quest for justice, to get the fell of the story itself and to understand all of the prospects and risks the three players took to get to where they are now.

The strength of these novels isn’t in the subject matter but the masterful writing and intriguing plot. It’s a great series for kids (and adults) wanting to read a good story. Wolfe has a distinct writing style, and makes you feel like you are there with the characters. Wolfe wrote the books so that even if you have never played Minecraft, you wouldn’t be “lost” in the story. Also, the plot flows seamlessly from book one to book two in the series. The second book was not a disappointment. Wolfe kept the same enthusiastic writing style as I enjoyed in the first. It’s a nice series, and I recommend it heartily.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

** spoiler alert ** I loved the Kat and G thing in the book, like how they were together but in my opinion. They broke up too fast, like we couldn't even see their relationship in another light. I understand that G put Kat in difficult positions, like "choose between me or ur friends" or "I think u don't love me bc you don't spend time with me". I understand Kat but still. Okay now to the storyline. Loved how Leonidas turned to be really really lovely with the NPC's and reject Caesar and goes to Elementias side. Didn't like the fact that DZ died, but I understand. And I forgot to mention, SALLY'S BACK
