The Lost Rainforest #1: Mez’s Magic Audiobook Summary
An action-packed and hilarious animal fantasy adventure from New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award finalist Eliot Schrefer, “this new series stunner” (Kirkus starred review) will thrill fans of Warriors and Spirit Animals.
Caldera has forever been divided into the animals who walk by night and those who walk by day. Nightwalker panthers, like young Mez and her sister, have always feared daywalkers as creatures of myth and legend.
Then Mez discovers that she can enter the daylight world, and she rushes to discover what it means to cross the Veil–and the extent of her newly uncovered magical powers–before a reawakened evil threatens everything she’s ever known.
Now, with an unlikely group of animal friends–including a courageous bat, a scholarly tree frog, and an anxious monkey–Mez must unravel an ancient mystery and face her greatest fears, if they are to have any hope of saving their endangered rainforest home.

My seventh and eighth grades students love Mez's Magic, and are looking forward to the next installment of The Lost Rainforest. It would also be appropriate for high school students. My students felt they learned about the rainforest and totally fell in love with Mez. As an adult, I also enjoyed this story. Thanks to Goodreads First Reads for my first copy of Mez's Magic.

*Read as part of the Shelf Stuff 2020 Summer reading challenge*Mez is a panther unlike any other. She can stay awake in the daylight. This shadowalking is extremely frowned upon by all nocturnal animals. Mez hides her secret until one day she ventures out of her den to find another shadowalker. This shadowalking Boa constrictor tells her of her special gift being shadow blessed and tells her of a mission to save all of Caldera.Reading this with my daughter she was very interested because she loves animals especially big cats. We loved encountering all the different animals of the rain forest that Mez meets along her journey and the diversity of the group that assembles at the Ziggurat. The friendship between Mez, Goji, Lima, and Rumi proves that even those who are different and unexpected friends can become close. This book kept me on the tips of my toes and really had me pushing to read all the way though it as quickly as possible to see what would happen to the ant queen and how these young animals would overcome her mighty powers.I could not imagine the amount of adversity mez has had to struggle with for her whole life up until now and being able to push forward without feeling constant negativity with what life has dealt her.I cant wait to read what happens next for the member of this group and who will appear in the next books.

Mez and her sister have been educated on folklore about The Ant Queen and her doom but always believed it as a fairy tale. Until the dangerous eclipse. Now Mez enters her, she learns that she has the ability of walking on both day and night. But she must hurry. She has to discover the unknown, her magical power, friends, traitors and most importantly, the ant queen. A really good book, and I can't wait to read the next one. I have a question for the author. Are you going to continue writing the series in Mez's point of view, or are you going to write it in her friend's point of views'? I also think that the author struggled to keep the point of view in the present, not in past tense, and I also struggled to read it that way, so I was not happy about that. Otherwise, it was a great book, and I am looking forwards to the next one in the series. 😍

This was a really fun read, definitely more suited to younger audiences than all ages though. But it was an easy read, and the whole concept of "daywalkers" and "nightwalkers" was really interesting once I realized they were not simply interchangeable with "nocturnal". It had great pacing and watching Mez's character development was really enjoyable. Definitely recommend for younger readers who like fantasy and any reader looking for an easy read

Mez is a panther living with his sister, his aunt and her aunt's cubs, who include a white panther and three little puffy cubs. Something strange happens when Mez realizes he can be awake during the day which is not allowed for panthers. He meets a weird boa constrictor who says he is a magic shadowwalker and they go on an adventure with lots of other animals who are also shadowwalkers with magic. Turns out, the boa constrictor is bad and wants to kill everyone and take their powers. As an adult, this twist was fairly easy to spot. Something was wrong with the size and age of the boa constrictor. What I loved about this story was the focus on how animals might see the world in their language--it's "everynight" for nocturnal animals, the word paw is used everywhere hand should go, which is perfect. There is also a lot about hierarchy and the way the rainforest works that even holds at the end. I'm not a giant fan of animal fantasy, but this one really felt grounded. There were also some real consequences for all the animals in the book. So while there was magic, it didn't keep animals from dying or getting hurt sometimes which is sad, but I think has to happen in these adventure stories to truly keep the stakes high, even for kids.

This was a fun adventure in a fascinating world. I loved how the rain forest setting is depicting, with the magic system neatly ingrained. The backstory for how the world is this way was also fascinating. The characters, various rain forest animals, feel true to their real-life counterparts, and I loved the interaction between them. The character arcs are a bit more shallow than I personally like, but for a middle grade I think they do very well. The plot structure, especially the climax, wasn't as satisfying as I'd like ((view spoiler)[ One villain is defeated by chance, and another escapes. The main character does help most of her friends escape, but they immediately split up again, not to meet for an entire year. Despite Mez's new independence which was her main character arc, she ends up right back with her stern-slightly abusive family. (hide spoiler)]). Also, this is more of a personal preference, but I really don't like present tense. It throws me out of the story. Overall, though, I highly recommend it. The rain forest setting and its story are wonderful. The characters are engaging, and relatable even though the main character is a panther.

Mez is a panther. She was born during an eclipse, and in magical Caldera, it makes her different from the rest of her family and most of the other animals of the Amazonian rainforest. Considered “unnatural” the eclipse born are either cast out of their families or have learned to hide their true selves. This chapter book is the first in a new series. It’s an animal fantasy story with many unique characters each with their own endearing personalities. Mez is the main character and the story is told from her point of view. In it the “unnatural” must learn to work with animals from different species in order to survive in a hostile world. It’s the age old good vs. evil tale with principles of friendship, family, and acceptance of others. This book is a good vocabulary builder with words like mandibles, slavering, sigils and envenomated. Middle grade readers and up who like fantasy stories with lots of action and animal characters will be engrossed by this novel.
