The Redemption of Philip Thane Audiobook Summary

The celebrated Penhallow Dynasty series continues in this deliciously witty and romantic Regency, perfect for the readers of Eloisa James, Lisa Kleypas, and Sarah Maclean.

How many times can a rake get it wrong . . . before he becomes Mr. Right?

Philip Thane–rogue, rake and scoundrel extraordinaire–hadn’t wanted to visit some dumpy provincial town to give a speech, but he’d struck a devil’s bargain with old Henrietta Penhallow, the imperious family matriarch. Nor did he expect that once he got there, he’d somehow be living the same day over and over again. It’s strange! It’s terrible!

On the other hand, it is giving him time to cozy up to the delectable, brainy Margaret Allen, in town to research the book she’s writing. Philip is sure she’ll fall starry-eyed into his arms, just as women always do.

But to his amazement Miss Allen stands firm against his wiles, day after day. How can she resist his seductive charm? Why won’t she change her mind? What must he do to win her heart?

Maybe–just maybe–it isn’t Margaret who needs to change, but rather a certain rogue, in love for the first time in his life, who will . . .

“Enchanting . . . Champagne in book form–bubbly, fun, and intoxicating.” —Entertainment Weekly on Lisa Berne’s The Worst Duke in the World

✨I love that I finished this on Groundhog’s Day✨Okayyyy I actually didn’t have a huge issue with this book. Like looking at the ratings I expected to HATE it. I knew going in that it was closed door so maybe that helped a bit—which is STILL bonkers bc he did some at least more explicit stuff with prostitutes on the page 😩 and apparently there was sex in previous books so idk why that PARTICULAR choice was made but I digress. They totally deserved sex after all they went through Jesus H Christ. I really digress. Buuuut I listened to the audiobook and I think that helped the inherent repetition in the story. I did like Thane by the end and I wasn’t ever really bored, although it did take me a while to get through. I thought his redemption was solid and their relationship was very cute. I also liked how neither was rich or titled: it’s something I haven’t seen often.I listened to the audiobook but I also did receive a physical review copy from Avon!

This was such a darling novel! If you like the ground hog day theme plus ghosts of Christmas past storyline, you gotta check this one out!!! It's a bit mundane with everything repeating over and over again but i loved the character development from our hero.

I found this to be a very fun, and different take on a historical romance. While this is the 6th book in the Penhallow Dynasty, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Lisa Berne has crafted a refreshing and unique historical romance based around a "groundhog day" scenario. I think Berne does a wonderful job of keeping the novel fresh and new as we watch Philip relive the same day over and over for the vast majority of the novel. Berne crafts the beginning with the feeling of monotony and annoyance, then moves through various tomfoolery, until a better and deeper understanding of the situation happens. This creates the perfect parallel for the hero's growth through out the novel. I definitely found that this romance story was really a story about the hero learning to be a better man, to see how he could be beneficial to the world around him and take responsibility for his past and future.Philip Thane is a rogue and a scoundrel who finds himself roped into giving a speech in a small dumpy provincial town, and to make matters worse he finds himself caught in a never ending loop of reliving the same day over and over again. Margaret, the heroine, is delectable and brainy and when Philip does not seem to immediately make her fall under his spell, he uses his relived days to cozy up to her. I really enjoyed that this felt like a different style of a small town, opposites attract type of novel. Because this novel revolves around the fact that the hero is stuck in a loop, he has to do the heavy lifting of change and understanding, and I think Berne does a really lovely job with this. Philip must learn a lesson, he must discover something about himself and his journey has many ups and downs in the beginning as he vents his frustration with the situation, and learns how far he can push things. I love that Philip has a slow journey to better understanding the situation and as we move into the latter half of his journey he starts to make small inner changes that will help him grow into a stronger, more aware human. The romance is this novel is very sweet, I found the heroine to be very compelling and interesting, she is able to provide a foil for the hero at times, to make him question things and look deeper, and while he journey might not be as broad as Philip's she does hold her own. The steam level of this novel is very low, there is only kissing, because the heroine believes her relationship with the hero to be only a day in length we were never going to move into a more intimate physical relationship. I think this works well for the story and characters and I would definitely have questioned things if the relationship took a very steamy turn.Overall, this is an enjoyable and fresh feeling historical romance. If you are looking for a low angst, sweet love story that really focuses on the hero's journey this is a great option to check out. Thank you to Avon Books and NetGalley for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is about things that we all deal with. We all have to face the grinding dailiness of life. Sometimes it is crushing, and learning to go on anyway while finding some joy is an important part of maturity. We all have to learn how to be the best person we can while living with others who are learning too. We all have to make decisions without knowing precisely what will happen. Everyone can relate to these themes, and that was why I found myself so moved and having such a hard time putting it down. I laughed and cried my way through to a lovely and heartfelt resolution. The framework of the plot is Groundhog Day, but we get quite a lot more than the movie because this is a book. My favorite part is that we get to read Margaret's POV. She is keenly intelligent and has an open mind. She does not understand how much she helps Philip to grow with her insights and integrity since she does not know the day is repeating, but Philip comes to treasure her as a complete person because of her responses time after time. Margaret holds this story together without even knowing what is happening. Now that is a strong heroine.I generally avoid books that use the word redemption in the title because I find that they want to slog through every bad thing that that character has done, the other characters get all dramatic over that stuff, and the ending is usually cloying. But this is not that kind of book. Philip's misdeeds have been covered in the previous books, and Margaret is not aware of those in order to be dramatic about them. Instead, the focus is really on Philip's attitudes, and that is vastly more interesting. He has a brain in his head, and when he finally comes to the end of himself, he starts to use it to truly grow as a person. I cried several times during the second half of the book because his transformation was so beautiful. The changes were real and solid because they are so hard won. He will never go back to who he was before, and he will continue to appreciate his new way of life.

This book reminded me a lot of 50 First Dates, even though it was the hero's day kept repeating. It gave him time to grow and evolve into a more compassionate person. I will say that it kept the heroine from growing along with their story, so it felt a bit one sided for me. However, I really enjoyed the premise of the book and it was written well.I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The story has some charm to it. Reading the outline of the story informed that this story is written quite differently then other historical romance novels. Reading Philips character, I see that he’s not the normal leading male character that comes on scene. While reading His character I envisioned him as one those obstinate, sneaky, back stabbing villains in the book. Luckily for Philip when Margaret comes along he slowly changes his character. The romance was sweet and charming between the two. I found some of the wording in the book to flamboyant. Keep wording simple and will help the book move along smoothly for the readers and keep the readers engaged in the book. The characters were entertaining and bought some excitement to the story.

This is the most AMAZING Groundhog Day fanfiction I've ever read in my LIFE. Even better, it's a slow burn, with the first kiss not even happening until (view spoiler)[page 267 (hide spoiler)]. It matches the movie beat for beat, including the ridiculous parts of him casually pulling a tablecloth free without shattering anything.

If you love the movie Groundhog Day, you’ll love this book. And I do! I thought the bit about how many women Philip could have at once was a bit much, but overall a fun book.

A Mash up of a charming historical romance of the rake-meets-his-match-but-must-reform type, and the actual movie groundhog day.Philip Thane, penniless rake, wastrel, with a chip the size of Chippenham on his shoulder, must perform a simple task to keep his aunt sweet and get his hands on some much needed cash. He must give a speech on her behalf at the Wittlesay Plough day festival. It does not even have to be a good speech.Margaret Allen, industrious bluestocking, is thrilled to attend plough day also. She is there to study the folk traditions of England for the book she is writing.Philip unexpectedly find himself trapped in Wittlesay, living slightly different versions of the same day over and over again, trying to win the heart of Margaret and making pretty much all the mistakes that Bill Murray makes in the movie, only less American and more historical. It is a fun idea for a story and well written, I did like the main characters and enjoyed the 'journey' that Philip took. It is a hazard with this plot though, that thing get dull as the same chunks of text are repeated over and over again (especially at the start of the book), I found this quite boring and skipped bits - I may have missed some subtle nuance here and there, but life is too short to live it over and over again.. For the most part though the writing was witty and entertaining. The ending was a little too perfect for my liking - but this is a historical romance after all. I guess I might have been a little more blown away by it if I had not already seen the film....

Premise:Philip Thane, an in-and-out rake, with more debts than even he would like to think, finally needs help to pay off the debt, but there's a slight problem, all his near relations are done paying his debts without ever getting a penny back, so he finally has to approach Henrietta, his faraway aunt, hoping to charm her into helping him because frankly charm and intelligence were the only two good qualities he had.But sadly, Henrietta was simply too clever and obviously knows his history so she refuses, unless he attends a function of Plough Day and gives a speech on her behalf, for the person she assigned the job got sick and can't go now. Now, Philip loathed this idea but necessity made him agree to this condition nonetheless. On the drive there, he encountered a beautiful woman who asked him for his help for her carriage broke so like a gentleman he is, he did.On the Plough Day, he gave a boring speech, tried to impress that woman, but when she wasn't he simply wooed someone else. But then he wake up the next day, and it's Plough day again. And so is the next day.Turns out he is stuck reliving the same day, until he actually figures out how to get out of it. And in figuring it out his whole life can change, but maybe it'll change for good.Review:I really liked this book. Maybe it's because I've not seen Groundhog Days, but nonetheless, it was fun to read.I never thought for once the author is exaggerating or that there's too much repitition, for it works well for the plot. As readers we needed to feel atleast a portion of how tired he was of reliving the same day. I liked the transistion of his perspective on having to relive the day. And even though he was a rake, I liked how his character arc progressed, which felt natural to me.Margaret was a wonderful character, and to look at her change even in Philip's eyes was pretty interesting.I liked the concept and how it is executed and even though a specific reason isn't given as to why the day keeps on repeating, yet I didn't mind it.It was an amazing book, and I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to see the process of how a person can change with time, with a romantic sidetrack. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC

This book was an interesting take on the historical romance genre and time loops which I didn’t expect. The story starts with Phillip Thane, on a mission from his Aunt Henrietta to attend Plough Day. On the way he meets  Miss Margaret Allen, her Aunt Seraphina, and Mr. Lawrence in an inn courtyard and offersvthem a ride. There's an instant attraction between Margaret and Phillip but his rakish wnd insulting acts and keep her away. The book takes place over one day that loops over again and again, the days unfold much like the movie but from the perspectives of Thane and Allen. I loved that detail and especially the points where Allen was close enough ro remember repeating the day. The character development was very clear as it was the same day, especially Phillip Thane's.I must say the beginning was okay-ish but it did progress well later one. As mush as a time look sounds interesting some parts were pretty boring but other than that this book was beautifully written and was a delight to read.I would give this a solid 3.5 stars,

Lisa Berne knocks it out of the park with a dazzlingly original and deliciously witty historical romance that is pure enchantment from beginning to end: The Redemption of Philip Thane.Philip Thane is an incorrigible rogue who sails through life thanks to his dashing good looks, magnetic personality and irresistible charisma. With funds running low and finding himself in desperate need of a cash injection, Philip decides to visit his distant relative Henrietta Penhallow and charm her into giving him a loan to help him out of the financial tight spot he has inadvertently found himself in. Philip is positive that the formidable Henrietta Penhallow will be putty in his hands from the moment he walks into her drawing room, however, the irrepressible Philip Thane is in for quite a shock because his imperious relation will only consent to giving him the money if he agrees to do her a favor: represent the Penhallow family by giving a speech at Plough Day in the tiny village of Whittlesey. Philip would rather stick pins in his eyes than spend a single second in a rural backwater surrounded by yokels and bumpkins. But things start looking up for Philip when on his way to Whittlesey, he finds himself crossing paths with the beautiful and fiercely intelligent Miss Margaret Allan, whom he is keen to get to know better.Margaret is headed to Whittlesey to do some research for the latest book she is writing. She is certainly not looking for romance – and even had she been looking for love, the rakish Philip Thane would be the very last man she would consider having a relationship with. Philip might be the most handsome man she has ever clapped eyes on, but she is determined to keep him at arm’s length. However, little does she realize that fate is going to thrust the two of them together in the most startling and unexpected of ways. Over and over again…Philip is counting down the hours until he can hightail it out of Whittlesey. He cannot wait to climb into the Penhallow barouche and never set foot in this tiny rural hellhole ever again. But the next morning, Philip wakes up and finds himself reliving the same day in Whittlesey. Stuck in an endless cycle where he is living through Plough Day over and over again, Philip now has plenty of time to take a long hard look at himself – not to mention having plenty of opportunity to prove to Margaret that there is more to him than meets the eye.The more time he spends with Margaret, the more he finds himself falling in love with her, but can he find the courage to stop hiding behind his rakish persona and prove to her that he is a man worthy of her love? Or will he keep repeating the same mistakes and end up losing the only woman who can make him happy?Lisa Berne’s The Redemption of Philip Thane is a spellbinding historical romance that will steal every reader’s heart. Sparkling with humor, emotion and heart, The Redemption of Philip Thane is a fresh, witty and ingenious take on the Regency romance that will have readers laughing out loud and shedding a tear or two.A heartfelt and captivating tale about second chances, letting go of the past and the magic of falling in love, The Redemption of Philip Thane is the story of two wonderful characters I adored. Margaret is clever, feisty, intelligent and courageous and it is impossible not to be charmed by Philip. Handsome, charismatic, funny, smart and a reader, he is perfect hero material. The fantastic Lisa Berne manages to pull off a Regency Groundhog Day with great skill, flair and aplomb and in The Redemption of Philip Thane has written a historical romance that has got winner written all over it.I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to say about this book. I was intrigued by the concept of one day in time repeatedly occurring over and over and over again, allowing for the gradual redemption of a character who most assuredly needs it. The inspiration for the novel came from Groundhog Day, a 1993 movie starring Bill Murray that used this concept with great success. Unfortunately, for me, what worked in a visual medium was less effective on the page. I've read Lisa Berne before. She's a good writer with a voice I enjoy and her writing in this book is good. The characters are vividly depicted, as are the citizens of the rural village where our main characters are stuck reliving Plough Day festivities. The challenge I had was with the format and the very slow pace for two-thirds of the book. I'm sure there are readers who will enjoy the character study (of Philip) that this type of plot device lends itself to. I wanted faster progression of the story and found myself losing interest, skimming paragraphs, pages, and whole sections. It didn't help that I found Philip repugnant for the majority of the book, didn't care if he was redeemed, and wanted to warn Margaret to run as far from him as she could. But then I hit the 70% mark of the book and everything changed. Here was the progression I had been waiting for, the redemption I doubted I would be able to buy into (I did), and the genuine feelings I needed to accept a relationship between Philip and Margaret (who I adored). If this had not been a romance I think I may have been more patient with the slow pace of the book. As character studies go, it's well done; I just wanted more advancement of the romantic relationship, a faster pace, and I really wanted to spend less than 70% of the book actively disliking the hero. Props to the author for trying something different with this book. If the premise is intriguing, and you don't mind a slower pace, give it a try or at least check out some other reviews. Just because parts of it didn't work for me doesn't mean you won't love it. 3.5 stars*ARC received for fair and unbiased review

The hero was a real piece of work at the beginning of “The Redemption of Philip Thane” by Lisa Berne, so there was no way I was putting the book down! Unable to get help from his closer relations, Thane went to a pillar of the Penhallow Dynasty, Mrs. Henrietta Penhallow, to ask for funds he probably was not going to pay back. Before he got to her estate, the town eccentric said he was right on time, pushed him towards her husband’s conveyance, and told her husband to bring him to his aunt. Aunt Henrietta knows of Thane’s libertine ways and would help him if he did an outstanding job representing the family by giving a speech at the Plough Day event in Whittlesey. With no other choice, Thane agreed. Along the way, a woman waved his aunt’s barouche down. With no other choice but to wait for the stagecoach to be repaired, she thanked Thane for the offer to ride to Whittlesey even after his perusal of her body. However, to Thane’s dismay, bluestocking Miss Margaret Allen went to retrieve her belongings which included an aunt and a new journalist friend. Thane was already not happy about going into bumpkin territory, but he needed to change and be loved for him to ultimately move forward. The hero was lewd and entitled in the beginning. I was so intrigued that I read as fast as I could to figure out why he was like that. Then, I realized that this was a Groundhog Day movie retelling! If you are a fan of the movie, you would read faster too because it’s bonkers. What wouldn’t you try if you know that the next day won’t come? The heroine obviously has a part in the hero’s character development, but it was his choices that brought him out of his loop. I do like that his character arc was rough, he had frustrating days between days he bettered himself. I like that the amount of days relived equated to how lost the hero was.If you like reading about a rake being redeemed and references to mythology, folklore, and Hamlet then this book is for you!Thank you to Net Galley, Avon, and Harper Voyager US for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.

Groundhog Day is one of my all-time favorite movies and this book was delightfully done. This is my first book by Berne and the low ratings from other readers have kept me away. I have started reading other books in this series and while I like them, this book goes above and beyond. Phillip Thane, on a mission from his Aunt Henrietta to attend Plough Day, picks up Miss Margaret Allen, her Aunt Seraphina, and Mr. Lawrence in an inn courtyard after their conveyance breaks down. There's an instant attraction between Margaret and Phillip but his rakish behavior and insulting comments keep her away. The book takes place over one day that repeats over and over again, the days unfold much like the movie but from the perspectives of Thane and Allen. I loved that detail and especially the points where Allen almost remembers repeating the day. Philip is pretty terrible from the beginning, but slowly over the course of his metamorphosis, the reader falls in love with him too. His antics are pretty funny, there's some wenching that takes place early on. I also loved how rich Margaret's character is and she's not this one-dimensional female. Her inner monologue into Philip's physical attributes is amusing. She's sort of drawn to him against her will. She becomes the catalyst and at times the inspiration that keeps Philip going as the days get harder. By the end, you believe he's a changed man. Berne's steam in her series is not overt but it's there. It's there in clever little interaction and details. So, while this isn't the typical steamy romance I would be drawn to, it's a nice change. The interactions between Philip and Margaret really drive the story forward and not gratuitous love scenes.I loved this whole book. It was soooo good and engrossing. I loved all the characters and the different variations of Plough Day. Making groundhog day into an enjoyable historical romance novel is no easy feat. And it's clear Berne had excellent editors helping her along. It didn't feel at any point that it dragged. If anything, I had to force myself to walk away and take breaks.

"Groundhog Day" meets sweet historical romance for a fun twist on the "stuck together" and "enemies-to-lovers" tropes. Philip Thane is an unlikeable rake until he gets stuck in a small town repeating their annual "Plough Day" celebrations over and over with the would-be woman of his dreams (who cannot stand him). It takes Philip a good 4oo pages to finally become that romantic hero we all dream of, (some of which can drag a bit), but he finally gets there. You will not get any steamy descriptive scenes with the hero and heroine in this one, which was kind of a bummer, but he does get up to shenanigans with some "shepherdesses" which get a little eyebrow-raising. It's somewhere between sweet and steamy, hard to classify. I was ready for this book to end after they escape the time loop, but there were several more pages of character wrap-up that I had to push through hoping for a good love scene. By that point, I didn't really care if Margaret got to speak at her symposium or what her family thought about Philip, I was ready to move on.This was my first Lisa Berne book, but I have a couple of others in my TBR that I look forward to trying out.
