Under Cover of Darkness Audiobook Summary

The youngest lawyer ever to grab the helm of Seattle’s most prominent law firm, Gus Wheatley has found success-as well at money, power, and prestige. He thinks nothing can interfere with his meteoric rise to the top. Until his wife, Beth, vanishes.

Beth’s disappearance coincides with a series of brutal murders the FBI dubs the “bookend killings.” They think Beth isthe killer’s latest victim… or his willing accomplice. But Gus knows his wife would never ally herself with a cold-blooded killer. The further he searches, however, the more he discovers that Beth isn’t the woman he thought he knew.

Beth may be alive. She may or may not be innocent. She may have come up against evil far more reaching than a serial killer. And for Gus and his family, that evil is much too close to home.

I'm not sure why I've never read any of Grippando's other books. This one, his latest, is set in Seattle and my bookshop owner put it in my hands with a request that I give it a go. I did and now I'm going back to check out his others. Gus Wheatley is the youngest managing partner his prestigious law firm has ever had. He's married to his job. His wife and daughter are just trappings. And then his wife goes missing. Is the a victim of a serial killer who's been making the rounds in Seattle? If so, why hasn't her body turned up? His life is turned outside in as he tries to find out and rediscovers what's important to him.

Absolutely excellent! What happens to push a father to the edge. A mother missing, victim or perpetrator? A daughter looking for answers. Backstabbing, loyalty, lies, and losing the most precious thing. Period. All of this doesn’t even begin to give you any idea what happens at the end of the book. My father who realizes what is important, a mother who longs for something lost, a six-year-old child just simply looking for comfort. It all boils down to a surprise twist, at the end, you will not see it coming. I mean that, you will not see it coming!

This is a great story! I was into it in the first chapter. Very well written. A prominent attorneys' wife goes missing. There is a rash of brutal murders that occur at the same time. His wife closely resembles the victims. The FBI, working with local police, are investigating. Gus, whose wife is missing, is also investigating. He is determined to find Beth and bring her home. Andi, the FBIs' agent on the case, has gone undercover in a cult, where she thinks she may find the serial killer. The question on everyones' mind is if Beth will be found alive. Or dead,

New author for me. Typical mystery/suspense but with a twist at the end I did not see. Fans of Harlan Coben will like this.

I picked up this book knowing that it was not the author's most recent immersion into the world of crime & mystery. Something just told me "see what this guy's talent pool looked like in a quieter & simpler time." The book was released in spring of 2001, shortly before we all lost our innocence by experiencing the tragedy of the World Trade Center and related disasters. A high-powered over-achieving lawyer is the protagonist, he's a lot better at work than he is taking care of business at home. Then his wife disappears, and eventually he's drawn into a complex plot involving ritualistic homicides and possibly gangs or cults. The tricky part is predicting whether his wife is a victim, or one of the perpetrators, and the clues are ambiguous. Not a great book, but it moves along nicely, and it was a wonderful companion as I stoked a roaring fire and hunkered down during a precipitous drop in temperatures in early January. 4 stars, and yes, I'd choose this author's works again, on a selective basis.

Having read a number of Grippando's books, I would rate this to be one of the better ones so far. The combination of serial killers and cults combines to make it very interesting. Somehow the author manages to keep multiple subplots all going at the same time without ever getting the reader confused. I do not know if he has written any other books that include the same characters, but if he has I will definitely read them. Also, by getting away from his standards plots based in south Florida and moving to Puget Sound and Seattle, he has moved to a much more interesting and less predictable part of the country.

I usually reserve five star ratings for very profound and thoughful serious novels, but I will pull it out for especially well written thrillers. This is one of those. It's not easy to pull off a character who has very few redeeming qualities, and Gus, the main character is just that. It makes it very real in that the good guys are not "all good." The supporting characters have a background and some meat to them too, and the story is reavealed ever so slowly. Very well done, I'm glad I've discovered this writer, now to start another one of his books

I started reading James Grippando with "Gone Again" the latest in the Jack Swyteck series and liked it so much I started reading that series backwards especially because my favorite Grippando character, even more so than Jack Swyteck who I love is Andi Henning. I really like this book because it gave the backstory on Andi's personal life including her broken engagement that was referenced in the Swyteck series as well as her early years with the FBI. Despite other reviews that cast Gus and Beth Wheately in a negative light, I found them both to be very believable, realistic characters.

In spite of some rather "hokey" parts in the story-Especially until the book grabbed me and held on- I really enjoyed this story and could hardly put it down after that. It was interesting to have a book with the crime focus being an occult type cult. I also loved the story being set in places I grew up at and visited often: I could really envision myself in the story since I have been there.
