Vessel Audiobook Summary

“Essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary life in China, and highly recommended for memoir enthusiasts in general.” — Library Journal (starred review)

“Chongda paints a tantalizing portrait of a changing China in his dazzling English-language debut. [Vessel] shines with the bright talent of an excellent storyteller.” — Publishers Weekly

An unprecedented and heartfelt memoir that illuminates the lives of rural Chinese workers, offering a portrait of generational strife, family, love, and loss that crosses cultures and time.

Cai Chongda spent his childhood in a rural fishing village in Fujian province. When his father–a former communist gang leader turned gas station owner–has a stroke that partially paralyzes him, his responsibilities fall to Cai, his only son.

Assuming his new role as head of the family, Cai toils alongside his mother and older sister to pay the medical bills that have become a part of a rapidly changing Chinese society. As Cai works his way through university and moves to Beijing, eventually becoming the editorial director of GQ China, he finds his life increasingly at odds with the family he supports but has left behind.

Like The Glass Castle and Hillbilly Elegy, Vessel neither romanticizes nor condemns the people and circumstances that shaped a young man’s life, but instead offers a way forward, revealing how tradition can enrich modern life.

AI works to my advantage when I hit the randomize option in Libby when looking for an audiobook-- this one popped up and I'm glad I borrowed it. A memoir of a guy growing up in a rural part of China and his experiences (he's a writer now so you can see how that went) with his father who had several strokes and was half-paralyzed for several years before he finally passed and living with and then supporting his mother who had her own lived experiences that were in contrast as times with Cai's-- how she tolerated her husband, how she worshipped, how she persevered in building a new home with little money for the sake of reputation and sheer will. It's a peek inside a different experience, in rural China where laboring and toil is the best and worst kind of existence but one that teems with life and love and how he looks back on his life is a great writers dreams to be able to capture the way he did.

A collection of autobiographical essays by Chongda Chai, a clever child who grew up in Minnan, in the Fujian province of China. A thoughtful young boy, he noticed the little details of the lives of his neighbors, and the struggles of his less talented friends as they tried to get a foothold on the precarious ladder to prosperity. Chongda, who became news editor of “Modern Weekly” in Beijing before moving on to the director’s post of “GQ” China, looks back with fondness on his old village, recalling both humorous and tragic episodes.

Cai Chongda has walked between worlds in a way that might overwhelm some. Born in a small village in China, he grew up in the 1980s as China was undergoing tremendous social and economic change. This isn't a traditional straight line memoir but rather a series of essays about his evolution into the man he is today- in a place and position beyond his early imagination. I liked this for the snapshots of life in China. The writing is terrific. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. Unusually for a memoir, this is one you can read in bits- an essay at the time- without diminishing its power.

Good book!I felt based on the entirety of the book it was a good book. The problem I had was he wrote the charters according to their importance in his life. You may read about him at sixteen then at twenty then twelve then in the University then nine. I found that disconcerting. But given that each of the individual stories were good and well written.
